Title: Driving me mad...brake squeal on Tarox 10 pots
Post by: alex_chung on May 30, 2010, 10:16:06 pm
Hi All,

At the moment I am running the 10 pot Tarox BBK on my Leon and its a great bit of kit bar one thing. Everytime I brake at low speed they squeal like nothing on earth. People turn their heads when I pull up at lights for the wrong reasons and I just feel like a complete twonk.
The kit has only been on the car for a year and when the last time it go unbearable I got the guys at Awesome (who fitted them) to check them over and apply some grease/copper slip on the pads but that only lasted a short time before the squeeling came back again.
I love the brakes but its gotten to the point where I am tempted to remove them and go for something else.
I am going to get the guys and gals at Awesome to have a look at time again when I down there in the next month or two but anyone got any ideas in the meantime? I know that Hurdy is running the same brakes and I don't think that he has the same issues.
Help!!
Thanks,
Alex

Hi Alex, what pads are you using?

Initially I had Corsa and Corsa+ pads, but the Corsa+ pads were too agressive and did squeal as I came to a halt. I went to TAROX HQ and they gave me some Rallye+ pads to try, which are less agressive and don't squeak........at all!

Not 100% sure. I got the kit from Awesome and they fitted it for me. Is there anyway to tell from the box without taking a wheel off and checking on the car?
Like I said I love the braking power of the brakes but its really getting me down at the moment.

Slotted discs?  Have found these noisier than drilled or plain.

Yea that is prob the first thing to try out. Need to find out what I have currently though!

Yes they are slotted (F2000 discs with the 10 pot calipers)

Corsa and Corsa+ pads are painted a copper colour. Rally and Rallye+ are silver backed :happy2:

From the quick look I gave it tonight, they look black backed? Will try and get a pic tomorrow.
Will have a look at the Anti Squeal shims as well.
Thanks guys!

Wheel balancing weights on the brake calipers.
It worked for the General:

(note, I do NOT recommend this method at all!)

Erm.......doesn't look like a really good idea does it? No wonder GM are in the trouble that they are

Lack of Quality engineering from the General.

Let me sort that out for you

Changes the mass of the caliper and thereby its natural resonant frequency therefore eliminating squealing and squeaking (under the conditions in which they were previously occuring).

porsche do something similar, by adding weight to the actual pad.

....But of course I expect well considered and beautifully engineered like only Porsche can do.  :notworthy:

I had emailed Tarox as well to see if we can figure out a solution to the problem and this is the email that they sent me:

Hi Alex,

We have found that the 345mm kit using a single piece discs with the F2000 pattern are proving to be uncomfortably noisy for road customers. We are in the process of rectifying this problem. The first course of action that seems to be working so far is to change the discs from F2000 to G88. TAROX are also developing new mounting brackets from steel rather than alloy as there is reason to believe the alloy is resonating the noise. The steel brackets have not been completed but if you would like to try the G88 discs please let me know.

Again I apologise for the delay, hope to hear from you soon

Kind Regards,

What do you think? Should I change the discs in the hope that this may work or change both the disc and the pads (to the same ones that Hurdy suggested)?
Alex

Oh Alex, I have 2 piece discs. I didn't realise yours were one piece ones :ashamed:  (shows you shouldn't always assume!)

From memory someone on here had the TAROX 10 pots with the single piece discs and these also squealed. They ended up going for 2 piece discs.

Oh right. I thought that you had F2000s as well, I couldn't find any information on the Tarox site about whether the discs were one or two piece at all. I take it the G88s are two piece?
Hopefully between the 3 of us (me, Tarox and Awesome) we can find a solution.
Alex

F2000's and G88's can both be 1 or 2 piece brakes :happy2:

Ordered some of those 3M anti squeal shims yesterday as I have the same problem on the standard disks and pads.

Disks and pads look fine so thought i would give them a go. Tried numerous hard stops and it doesn't go away.

Will let you know how i get on with them.

Funny but, although my AP's don't squeal (or very rarely), I quite like the sound.

Hmm, kinda know what you mean there, Robin. When coming off from a session on track and the brakes are stinking hot, there's a satisfying chip back from them to let you know you've been doing it right.

Oh, on a side note - how can suggesting you spend more money be an acceptable resolution to a problem? I want them swapping to the alternative discs for free, if they're what's at fault and the manufacturer acknowledges this (as seemingly they do).

....That's the one! And usually also accompanied by that sweet smell of hot discs and brake dust. In this fine sunny weather spell with my sunshine roof and windows open, I've even been enjoying the squeals and smells after spirited B-road sessions. It's good to know the car is alive.

I will not be happy going down that route. Like I said hopefully we can work something out. Got some of the anti shim pads through the post so going to get them added too.
As for the noise, I do know what you and RR mean and I would agree with you but when you pop round to the shops or work then its rather annoying
