So a noted absence from the cherry miester for the last week or so as ive been busy finally getting the project mobility landrover mission underway with the rest of the guys from the cornwall offroad club
i'll have to dig photos out from the other guys at some point as i was too busy to remember to take shots as we went, but things are going very very well.
so far over £10,000.00 of equipment has been donated which has finally all arrived and allowed us to start the build up of the chassis this weekend. the donor chassis (in the background) was stripped of everything useful and slowly cleaned and refurbished and then transplanted
no pix from yesterday but we went from a rolling chassis, to a tubbed rear with suspension trial fitted and the welding done

today was spent mainly attaching the body and all of the running components. i went mental on the bodywork and sorted out the filling and sanding and finished with the lid going on and then the suspension mounts finding their final homes

^^^ thats how its left for now, during the week we'll be doing the electrics, doors and then finally getting the engine and gearbox in which with the weight will finally allow us to get the suspension seated for use
then its off for paint and then i'll be sorting out some graphics for it and then all of the sponsor logos etc ready for its parade through wootten bassett and then out to Afghanistan where it will meet troops and then to its final home with the guys of 40 commando :notworthy:
to say i'm knackered is an understatement! but been so worth it!
you might even see me on the tellybox after we all got interviewed and when asked my name i replied with.... "i'm batman"
i'll be busy for the next week or so getting the truck ready, and i'll add some more pictures for those interested as i go!
-
thats very cool . whats the story behind it then ?
-
couldn't think of a better project!what engine is going in?

The trucks being built as a utility vehicle for troops that have lost limbs in conflict, its the second vehicle to be built with the first one finding its way to a nice chap whos life is now at a level of normality now he's mobile again
This is all for a charity known as project mobility, but specialising in 4x4's for injured troops
the engine we've got for it is a 300 Tdi so a nice strong powerplant, but we had wind today that a widow might be paying for us to convert it to automatic too which a huge bonus
its taking alot of time as many of the parts from different companys dont fit together well but thats where the fun part of fabrication comes into play and weve got all sorts of guys helping out each with various knowledge so between us all its all slowly coming together to make such a specialised vehicle
there was alot of rot on the donor, but nothing a die grinder and air tools couldnt solve
even the women mucked in, from spraying up calipers to undersealing tubs to keeping the pasties flowing.. a big group effort.
i'll be starting the graphics once its running and the colour has been put on, black and silver will be the theme over either a white or green with black accents onto the spats and outer roll cages and rock sliders
should look the business once its done, the shots i took show it very far along compared to what it was but theres still a very long way to go
