Title: Modding has halted... the GTI has a new companion!
Post by: Garth on June 10, 2010, 11:23:16 am
I just couldn't live with the 1.6 mk4 as a second car so the GTI has now become the second car, replaced by this:

E92 330i coupe with a few choice options:
Bluetooth, 19" alloys, heated red leather
and only 14k miles

It was hard to find a 330 with a REAL gearbox. This was the only used 330 (i or d) in the whole of the BMW network with a decent colour combo and a manual gearbox. Everyone buys these with auto and the BMW auto box is terrible in my opinion.

The only downside is that it will be driven by my fiance as I do far too many miles to spoil such a nice car  :sad1:

Modding the GTI will now have to be put on hold for a while... at least until after the wedding

CHeers mate. Not much point mapping this though as it's a 3L NA car. No turbo to wind up so not much gain. That said, it doesn't need it as it shifts as standard. The noise is simply  too!

Nice :happy2:
Check the indicators though seem to be an issue with them on beemers

....Shall I tell Garth, or will someone else?

The words "short" and "curlies" and the dreaded "home improvements" come to mind

Glad it's not another diseasal though!

Ha ha. I can honestly say (and I must be in the minority here!) that this is not going to happen
I asked her what car she would like if money was no object. She said she wanted another 3 series coupe (I've had 2 before) with a manual gearbox and a decent sized engine. As luck would have it, I really wanted an E92 330i so winner! She always seems to want the same stuff as me.

The home improvements have been going on years and have now taken a back seat to the new car

I must be marrying the only woman in the world that doesn't nag or whine  :congrats:

RR, diesel Beemers are ace! My last 2 were 330d's and it's nothing like the VAG diesel, they're monsters

Then she is most definitely worth marrying! A rare gal! :notworthy:

Yep, I know BMW make some of the best engines - I just don't like diseasals.. I think it's the sound I dislike so much, or lack of it! It's just my prejudice.

I know what you mean. Most diesels sound awful. The 330d sounds about as good as it gets from a derv and is almost like a loose 6 cyl petrol, but not quite.

I AM looking forward to 3L 6 cylinder petrol noises again though. Brum, brum! How can this engine give 39.2mpg on a combined run? It's insane. On a steady motorway run, it can hit 50mpg  :surprised: It's twice the size/weight of the GTI, with more power. Happy days...

The answer to your quezzie "How can this be done?" is quite simple:

B M W and German - They're good at what they apply their minds to. I'd have a Beemer again.

Your mate must be a REALLY $hit driver then!

I've had 2 of these already and can honestly say they're as good, if not better than my GTI in the wet. Sure, they're crap in the snow, but how often does it snow round here? Maybe 1 week a year?

I'm sick of people telling me about 'a mate' or 'a guy I know' or 'a friend of a friend' who has a horror story about driving a BMW in the wet. The fact is, these wet handling problems dissapeared with the E30. The E36 wasn't bad and the E46 was amazing in the wet. The E92 feels safer to drive in the wet than my GTI which throws it's nose around like mad in the rain.

Rant over  :congrats:

Yep, in Leeds, about 1 week of snow as mentioned. If you want to be really precise, there were only actually about 4 days where there was snow on the roads. Once the gritters were around, there was no problem whatsoever. In that week, I drove a 320d a 330cd, a Z4, a mk4 golf and my mk5 GTI. The one that struggled the most in the slush was the GTI.
In the actual snow, the Beemers were all stuck dead I admit, but even in the slushy, gritty crap they were fine.  :happy2:

Thanks mate.
Yeah I've been after one for a while and when this one came up, it was too good a price for the mileage and spec so I had to take the plunge.
I did test drive a 335i a week ago and very nearly bought it, but the fuel eceonomy was nowhere near as good as the 330i and it didn't have heated seats (which are a must with leather in the winter I recon).

Thanks, and yes we test drove one at the weekend.
The salesman said to Rachel: "How does this compare to the last auto you drove?" The reply: "Exactly, the same, bloody awful, I HATE it!" Hahahahaha, I just looked at the guy who looked a bit hurt  :congrats:

I still don't rate the new autos. Why can't Audi make a decent 6 cylinder engine and BMW make a decent auto box? A dsg equipped 330i would be awesome

Errrm, not quite. We've still got the mk4 too  :ashamed:

Deep pockets simply isn't true, I wish it were, I just wanted the car and so did my fiance, so I worked out a way that I can *just* afford it.

I saw in Evo this week that the combined MPG cycle for the E92 330i is 39mpg - Are you hitting that Garth or is that a fantasy figure?

I know these newer engines are becoming solid at combining performance and economy, but I didn't realise it had spread to the petrol straight 6's  :happy2:

To be honest, most of the mileage done in it is round towns by my wife so it's about 25-30mpg when she has it. On the motorway you can easily get it to high 30's and if you are prepared to cruise at 70 you can average 40mpg. I have seen over 50mpg on a motorway run with bloody average 50mph cameras on.

When I have it, my average is mid to high 30's so I'm really pleased with that. It gets slightly better economy than my GTI which is very impressive for a heavy 3L car

I think that in itself is the key really for as you say what is a heavy'ish 6cyl 3.0 coupe.

If I drive to my local Tesco Express, I've had 14mpg cause the engine won't even be warm. Round town I rarely drop below 28mpg. Commute see's 33 ish mpg and I've had 42.5mpg on a 300 mile + round trip. Mines not engine modded barring a blowy exhaust and an ITG panel filter  :P

Basically, you're more or less matching those figures in the 330i which I think is very respectable, and I don't consider the 2.0T FSI K03 to be an uneconomical engine really :happy2:

Having owned lots of BMWs i have to disagree about the auto box i think they are very good my only comparison though is a new Mercedes c250 auto that is sh*t!

I love the coral red leather its the same as in my wifes new space grey e92 lovely colour combo , next time get the pro nav this is something i always have avoided but this time we have it very nice with the blue tooth

I love the ED30 but on a run out the BMW is my choice

I have been driving my fathers 330i auto for several weeks and find 30 mpg about as good as it gets with a mix of driving .

I guess it depends what you're used to and what you like really. I've never been a big fan of autos and the one in the Beemer is not necessarily worse than other autos, it's just that it's not the best one out there and even the best one out there (probably the dsg in the VW's) I still don't like much. If my knee wasn't on the way out, I'd never normally consider an auto.

I'm surprised you like the nav in the Beemer as it adds the idrive system which I can't stand. I have the bluetooth and it is very good so I'm happy with my interior. Anywhere I go that needs nav is done in the Golf and tomtom is still better at navigating than the OEM solutions I reckon. Sure it doesn't look as good, but whenh I need nav, I need it to be good

The auto boxes on Beemers really rob you of economy. My old E46 manual 330cd coupe used to get nearly 40mpg average whereas my bosses that was exactly the same but with an auto struggled to get 30mpg

I've had driven both auto and manual E46 BMWs. I had the manual and my brother had the auto, tbh I preferred the auto. I think it's because BMWs are heavy cars and the auto box coped better IMO. Manual was nice though, just not as smooth. And no, it wasn't just my car because I test drove a few before I eventually bought one.

On another note, nothing wrong with them in the wet. Decent tyres always do the trick.  :happy2:

Love the E92 btw, black looks great.
