Hi All
I'm new to the forum and have just bought an '07 Mk5 GTI in Shadow Blue with DSG running on standard 17 inch wheels.
I'm loving it's performance and all round practicality...however, my only gripe is the tyre noise which is driving me insane...I bought it from a VW dealer who stuck a new front tyre on it (Nexen N6000) but may have compounded the problem. Basically the setup I have is:
Bridgestone Potenza RE050 225/45/R17 (2 Rear tyres)
Nexen N6000 225/45/ZR17 (Front Right Tyre)
Goodyear Excellence 225/45/R17 (Front Left Tyre)
I don't suppose the mix of tyres is helping but can anyone recommend a performant but quiet tyre to replace any of the above?
Also, does anyone know if any of the above tyres are a particularly hard compound which may be making the problem worse? I think the tyre wear at present is good as the VW dealer wouldn't have sold it under warranty without a decent amount of tread (i.e. 5mm upwards).
Many thanks
Russ

Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's are a pretty quiet tyre...........just happens that I have 4 part worn tyres for sale in the for sale section :happy2:

Double check the wheel bearing(s)
Rear are know to fail, having mine replaced in the morning.
Else AVOID Dunlops. Bl@@@dy noisy!!!

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 are a very quiet tyre, but very expensive too!
I can say without any doubt that Sunew tyres are the noisiest I have ever used... mind you no-one else is stupid enough to buy them

Plenty of posts on here would suggest that the noise is caused by weird tyre wear on the rear tyres, although it might sound like rear wheel bearings!. This is common in GTI's and is caused by the way the rear suspension is set up for a sporty feel. Some tyres are worse than others, but you can see the odd wear mostly on the inner edge of the rear tyres. My Bridgestones are quite noisy and you can definitely see the "saw tooth" wear pattern.
Swap your front and rear wheels and you should notice a difference, although for a hundred or so miles you might feel the odd wear through the steering wheel. :happy2:

I'm very surprised that a VW dealer supplied a car with mixed tyres. I thought the golden rule was never to mix tyre brands/treads on the same axle. It could potentially action interference from your ESP.

Which are also hard and noisey. I've had two deform on me too which made them even noisier! Cant wait to ditch the ones on my R - even with the Haldex, front end grip is rubbish.
Goodyears are one of the best compromises between durability, grip and noise from my experience. Michelins are very good too, but arguably, not better enough to justify the premium over the Goodyear Assymetrics.

I believe Costco have their Michelin tyre deal on at the moment. PS3's ftw. :happy2:

Yep, 20% off for 4 tyres, just started -- less than a month after I bought 4 tyres! Oh well...

....Yes, extremely good as an allrounder. However, I think I'm going to try Michelin PS3's next.

I had this on my ed30, it turned out to uneven tyre wear on the rear. Get it jacked up and have a look !!!! :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2:

Thanks all for your responses...
I bought the car from VW and therefore hope the wheel bearings aren't shot as this should have been checked...and thinking back it has made this noise ever since I bought it.
I believe it's the tyres and as has been suggested above, probably the rears (Bridgestones), although tyre wear doesn't look too bad i.e. they still have a fair bit of meat on them.
Thing is, how do I stop it happening again?

Fitted Vreddestein Sessenta's to mine, worn my 1st set down to 2mm and have no uneven tyre wear. Have had not to mess with the factory Geometry set up. Change your tyres and issue your running the currect pressures.

Don't buy kumo's, I bought my gti with these fitted to the rear and am on the way to getting tinitus!

I've just watched the TV prog I mentioned earlier and it appears that most tyre manufacturers specifically test their products for road noise. So, how come some tyres have road noise at all?
-
It may be worth considering the Vredestein Ultrac Centos if tyre noise is the issue. I believe that they are replacing the Sessantas to comply with some 2012 EU Regulation on tyres noise. See my review here:

Ive just purchesed 2 Vred's sessanta's today ,delivered for £190 from camskill.co.uk
Your running too soft on your pressures.Vredestein recommend 40psi in my case a GTi. 225/40/18's.
Accoarding to the dealership, they are not being faized out, the assym design is still a new design

^^^^
What concerns me about bloody regulations is the question of what is being compromised in order to meet those rules. Personally I'd choose performance over noise without a second thought.
-
.
Them Vred Cento's ain't asymmetric. IMO an asymmetric tread is always going to perform better.

I heard it was the Vred Ultrac that are and the Ssessanta's are not being replaced Muckipup?

dont knock it until youve tried it robin!

....What do you think I'm "knocking"? I'm just saying that, in my opinion, and experience from riding on both directional and asymmetric tyres that the asymms perform better, so I reckon it's unlikely the Vred Cento's will outperform the Sessanta's. They may be quieter though. :happy2:

Am pretty sure the pressures are correct as I'm going by those stated on the inside of the filler cap, unless I'm doing something wrong...
Oh and the tyres are potentially in the state they are in due to the previous owner / garage, as I've only had the car a few weeks... Having said that I had a good look at them yesterday and there is some evidence of wear on the inner portion of each rear tyre, but not anything I would have necessarily worried about. Can the noise come from any amount of uneven wear?
-
On a tyre related topic, can anyone tell me the differences between a 88w and 92y, and whether going for the former would cause any problems?
