Alright, I need more grip and I am considering some 17" lightweight alloys for track use and wondered whether or not 245-40-17 tyres would fit okay width-wise.
The radius will be 5mm less than the 225-40-18's but it is the width I'm wondering about. Similarly I believe I would have to have at least 8" alloys for correct tyre width fitment too.
The tyres I'm considering are the Toyo R888's see below.
http://www.tyretraders.com/SearchType/Default.aspx?Width=245&Ratio=40&Rim=17&Manufacturer=TOYO&ItemCategoryID=MOTOR%20SPORT%20TYRES
And this is the calculator I used

Any input welcome :happy2:

Funny you mention road legal track tyres, I was speaking to someone today who runs an old factory Leon Cupra Cup car as a track slag and I asked what tyres he used? He said he's found Dunlop DZ02G to be the best, gets a good 6 trackdays (very hard use, soft compound) out of a set if you rotate them and they stick like the proverbial.
Similar in price to R888s and come in either medium or soft compound for about £140-£160 a tyre - something to consider, as a Leon is not far off our size/weight. I think I'll try a set next time.
Sizing, not entirely sure, sorry.

I've managed to find a tyre width to rim width calculator too.
http://www.alloywheels.com/tyrecalc.asp
245 section tyres should fit on anything between 8" to 9.5" :happy2:
All I need to know now is will the tyre width fit under the arches okay?
Anyone?
-
You will have a mission making them fit mate but I think it is possible with the correct offset. Also unless you run a lot of camber for the front arches you will rub a lot if you want the car to be low, if its high you probably shouldnt have too much of a problem..
I had 235/40/18 R888's on the S3 and that was with a ET42 wheel, I think with an ET45+ wheel and rolled arches, 2+ degrees negative camber you should have them fit on without too much trouble..
Im trying to get the 265's on but I need 9" rims for that, up to now I have only found a couple of wheels than I can get in the 5x112 with the correct offset.
Send me an email and ill send you an excel document that I have which should help you out with what your doing!

I was thinking about also dropping a size to 17" x 8" alloys.
The new OZ Alleggerita HLT ones look promising at just 6.4kg's each :surprised:

Thanks for the info. I've sent you the e-mail :happy2:
265's does look like a proper wide tyre and I'm sure that where there's a will there's a way

So, I looked and they do them in 18"...... DAMN YOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!
Fantastic sizing, 17x8 or 18X8 5-112 ET48. Not cheap though.

nice choice of wheel Hurdy :happy2:

Looked at them when I was looking at what wheels to get but they were not going to be available until early March apparently.. Couldn't wait that long. They are stunning :happy2: :happy2:

Cheers guys.
TD, sorry I wasn't trying to spend your money...honest!! :innocent:
I think I'll try and get my local tyre guys to pop a 245 section tyre on for me to check fitment. :happy2:

Where is my credit card? Been looking for a track wheel. Thanks Hurdy, you have found them for me :happy2:

Just read all the posts again. Just a thought Hurdy. Doesn't your brake set up need a little more room than 17"s or am I having a blonde moment.

No problem, we've been discussing lightweight wheels for a while over on the dark side actually and it's been noted that some OZ wheels are a little weak, fine for driving, but buckle easily with potholes etc. that's why the Superleggeras were withdrawn.
Even at 1kg per wheel heavier, I think I'd still go down the Speedline route and save myself £450+.

How about a leftfield option........
http://www.radius-autotech.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=68&Itemid=151
On the tyre side, you should be OK. Although the Toyo 888 is a straight side wall the width of Toyo's is usually less that otherr brands IE a 245 Toyo would probably be the same measuerd width as, say a 235 Goodyear.... HTH :happy2:

Not quite blonde, but the TAROX's will fit under 17"'s It is just that some won't have clearance to the spokes. The Alleggerita's have a good spoke clearance and should still fit.

They'll look the shizzle on yours Hurdy, I'm not exactly sure what shizzle means, but I think the kids use it for good. :happy2:
THE track wheels to have!
-
I am sure I have seen 255 35x19's on a TT. Would these not be an option?

I am sure I have seen 255 35x19's on a TT. Would these not be an option?
Not an option really. I'm looking for wheels that are lightweight with a low rotational inertia. 255x35x19's on a TT is a different kettle of fish as the arches are larger and they come with 245 section tyres on the TTS as standard!
-
I have worked out that on a 9" rim with ET42 (the highest you would be able to get away with without having the wheel rub on the strut) that you could fit a 255/35/18 tyre and it would overall package would sit about 18mm further out than your TD's with 225/40/18's
Obviously if you went for the 245/40/18 then it would give you a little more room (-5mm) but a 245 section tyre on an 8" rim is not a great idea, the wheel will not be able to support the side wall and you will get a lot of roll in the tyre, also 245/40's are pretty tall in comparison to a 225/40
Im going to try and get the 255/35's on the car but its going to mean new wheels, which are a mission to source, 18x9's with high offset are pretty much non existent with a 5x112 fitment.. Also im going to have to get wider arches on the car, should really help with traction though..
I had 235/40/18 R888's on the S3 with the Speedlines, 18x8 ET42 and there was no issue with them, but even a 235/40 tyre on an 8" rim is a little wide..

....
I was very surprised to realise how much smaller the wheels were on the racing SEAT's recently : -

Not directly on topic but related.

Yeah its the S2000 regs, need to be running 17" wheels..
Not like the old super tourers with 19" wheels and 450mm discs!

18" x 9" would be something like the uber expensive and uber lightweight carbon fibre rimmed dymags.
How come when I'm trying to save my pennies up after buying the missis a car out of my budget - all I want to do is spend even more!!!!!???
-
Haha.. ERRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMM! maybes..
So are you going to be running some fat sticky tyres on Sunday then!?
Jonny
-
Depends on the whether.............whether or not I drag my arse to the tyre dealers
Looked at the TTS wheel info and it runs on a 9" alloy too and the tyres have a "strengthened sidewall, so I'm presuming this is just an extra load rated tyre!
-
This worries me slightly!!

May try the car on the Sessanta's and then get some Toyo's in the Spring having seen that! Especially as th forecast says it's going to be freezing overnight and most of the day.
