Title: Pete's Steel Grey GTI
Post by: rdfcpete on June 17, 2010, 11:17:18 pm
Well chaps... Perhaps overdue, as I'm actually more or less at the end of my project mod wise, having owned the car for a year. I'll have it for a while yet though   I'd always wanted a Mk5 GTI and was in the market for an upgrade from my 03' 1.6 Clio.

I bought the car last June with standard spec plus the winter pack and the tyre pressure sensor.
I loved it as it was tbh, but had always planned to mod it with OEM parts and keep it subtle having seen a lot of fine examples on here. Eventually, I ended up with a look in mind and to be honest, I've stuck to it bit by bit. Nothing extravagant, but still required some saving  :indifferent:

First phase of mods were;

- OEM GTI red trim mats
- VAGCOM lead from Nigel  :happy2:
- ITG PF
- OEM Arm rest
- Footrest and seat inlays
- Phillips 6000k Xenon foglight bulbs
- OEM underseat drivers side tray
- R32/OEM Xenons (HAD to have them as my Clio had them, once you've had Xenons I don't think you go without them again... Big thanks to Jay with fitting ((JPC))  :happy2: )
- RNS-510
- MDI Interface + USB Lead
- Hawk HPS performance front pads
- Hertz DSK165 front component speakers
- 8Jx18 Shadow Monza reps (which were eventually sold on ebay and were only going to be winter rims anyhow...)
- VC's sexy red GTI decal on the ally strip above the glove box

These bits were put on over the last 9 months or so.

And yesterday was the day of the main exterior mods and final'ish touches. So, I loaded the car up on Tues night and the following went on;
- .:R32 rear clusters
- Ed30 splitter
- Black front VW badge
- 7.5x18 Genuine Audi S-Line Split rims in OEM silver
- 4x ContiSport 3 tyres

First of all, I know it needs a clean!   More pics to come in the natural daylight once that's done.

Whats left? Well, colour code the skirts + rear bumper leaving the black plastic diffuser, a remap of some sort (would like to touch 250hp and leave it there once I've got the cash for a new clutch too) and I've toyed with a little drop, but, tbh I'm quite happy with the stance on the standard springs   Maybe 20mm on H&Rs to close the gap in the arches. It's never going to be tracked though so I don't need anything that stiffens the ride or tightens the handling.
Some 18" Monzas will also be on the list as winter wheels.

I've got the red rear GTI badge to fit but not sure if it'll look good on the Grey?
Few scratch repairs exterior and to a few fascias to come too, but mod wise I think I'll settle somewhere there

Cheers for looking guys
Pete.

Thanks mate

Tell a lie, they're in fact 6000k fog light bulbs but yeah, I really like the light output. The soul reason I got them was to use them with the cornering lights, but turns out I don't have the right electrics controller!  Chin up...

Fog Bulbs: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300316940171&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSA:GB:1123

The seller I got the badge from doesn't unfortunately list them anymore it seems, but the seller was 'lucky-7-styling'.
Tbh if the badge doesn't suit the rear profile I'm looking for, then I could flog you mine. I'll keep you posted

Thanks fella

They go for anywhere between £400-£1200 on there, with and without tyres and condition dependent obviously.
Mine have a few scuffs and kerbing' but ultimately, I'll refurb them.

Thanks Swansea hard-man
I agree with the drop... but, not yet! And I do like how it sits currently, so that's at the back of the queue unfortunately.

Colour coding the rear bumper + skirts is next on the list  :jumpmove:
When will Bens black GTI thread begin to take shape?  :happy2:

Some more from earlier before the light faded totally (sorry about the quality, all on my LG Renoir with fading light and a poor flash - but they'll do):

Cheers dude. Hmm, I think on a CW it would.
With the Grey, I definitely want to do the skirts and the bumper. I don't like the shape of the Ed30 bumper too much for some reason, so going for the black diffuser look suits me, all in all.

- Small update.

Did a mini detail with Martin (Drapoon - thanks mate!) to tidy things up somewhat. The paintwork wasn't actually that bad previous but was still probably 60/70% swirled at least.

Started like this...

Got cracking:

Plans remain as:
- Spray the top bit of the rear bumper grey + spray skirts grey
- 10mm spacers for the rear axle with suitable bolts
- Pressed style plates (fully legal)
- Carbon wrap the side black glass looking panels
- Stage one map
- Fix the Air Con (replace compressor  :chicken: ) which happens Friday
- Touch up stone chips with VAG steel grey pencil
- Refurb the Splits in gunmetal Grey. Closer up they're in fairly bad nick on a couple

I think I'll settle for that for now.
More updates to come when the above materialise

Cheers.

Thanks mate! Would you fit the red GTI badge to the rear and replace the silver one? I can't remember if it's you that did it and encouraged me before  :jumpmove:

Looking great there pete :happy2: Cant wait to see it finished
Thanks boyo  Yeah, just a small budget and minor tinkers worth and I think it'll be finished.

Can't decided whether to wrap the front grill black section... Has it tempted you before?

Excellent work Pete. A really nice looking GTI with tasteful mods.

I had a Mk5 GT in steel grey and its a difficult colour to make it really shine, but once you did the detailing it came up lovely.

p.s Can I ask how much you paid for the audi split rims? I'd love some of these on my Mk6

^ Thanks fella :drinking:

You're right, steel grey takes some work for it to look better than just 'clean'. Martin did a great job though in the time we had.

- Sure. They were £580.00 delivered (£50.00 courier) from eBay, a guy that had a 3.2 V6 A3 on an 06 plate. He originally had them up for £650.00 + P&P but the auction finished, so I bartered with him in emails after agreeing the price. Expect to pay anywhere between £500 and £1600 for a genuine set. There's only really one that's got serious kerbing' (down to the black beneath the lacquer in 2/3 spots) but tbh from a distance, you can't see it. Get close and the wear and tear is more evident. Rear 2 are better than the front 2, as perhaps expected.

What I would say about the splits is particularly on bigger cars, Sirocco's, MK6 Golfs, bigger Audi's etc... 19"s would probably be needed for them to look smart. Because of the design of the wheels, they might get lost in 18"s on your MK6. I've stuck with 18x7.5J so I can still afford tyres and also as I live in speed bump central, therefore the suspension is staying as it is. I just need spacers on the rear and I'll be happy  :happy2:

Decided to give another set of LED sidelights a go. These are 100 lumen jobbies which I was hoping would be very bright. On paper, they're the brightest LED side lights that I've found on eBay. They were £12 and looked the spec I needed on paper. They look great at night as parking lights (pics to come) but during the day, they weren't as vibrant or bright as I was hoping so after 6 sets of different sidelights in a year, I think I'll call it a day here

Despite being camera phone pics, I found it really hard to capture them nicely. They look ever so slightly more distinctive in first person, but that's about the best they get. They take the yellow glow away from the Xenons at night which is a nice touch, but unfortunately it was yet again £12 thrown away in theory... At least I can give up now with using side lights during the day

.
The last pic shows the whiteness and clarity of the light best. Yep, not very bright - At least not in the photos. A big improvement over the oem sidelights though.

Still, 6 sets of bulbs is doubtless cheaper than swopping your fogs for LED monkeyfaces like my DRL's.
Title: Re: Pete's Steel Grey GTI
Post by: rdfcpete on September 25, 2010, 06:27:47 pm
Thanks Robin. That's very true about cost, I know the Hella's aren't cheap.

The answer would be to have the foglights run as DRL's. I've not got the right bulbs however, so they wouldn't really be suitable or legal I suspect, but they do look great and they're not dazzling or distracting. They give a vibrant presence in the daylight.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv394%2Frdfcpete%2FIMAG0116.jpg&hash=cfb18158e26dc9d1ff843e14523204d171621d9e)
I haven't got the right modules though so they don't work when the FL as DRL option is ticked in VCDS.

My attempt at some artistic stuff, which with a mobile phone and awful lighting wasn't easy

Cars looking good Pete, and im liking the subtle way your going about it, OEM xenons are great and half way through reading I was going to suggest ditching the horrible yellow sidelight bulbs, so it was funny to see you have had an LED sidelight addiction!  They certainly look brighter than the ones I have installed and getting a light colour match with the xenon bulb makes a massive difference to the appearance at night.  :happy2:

I look forward to seeing how this develops especially the 20mm drop and stage 1 map as I think I like the idea of both myself  :driver:

I wouldn't know where to start tbh, but I'm hoping to scope out some expertise locally that can do it. I've a couple of mates with Mk5's that might know what they're doing  :happy2: I called up my local specialist who do my high level servicing (water pump, cambelt, clutch etc...) but not had a call back yet.
I'll let you know the price when they do.

I'm not that fussed about the map just yet. I think I've got a hole in the exhaust somewhere so an OEM replacement and an engine health check would come before I think about a Bluefin or APR etc...
Xenons were simply a must have. Makes my next few cars very difficult to choose!  :scared:

I must've read your mind with the side lights  They do look good, but to me the yellow ones were a little more noticeable in the day. The white LED gets lost in daylight. Which bulbs do you run?

I think the drop will really bring it on cosmetically and hopefully progress comfort and handling in the right direction too.
Updates to come once fitted  :jumping:

It's staying for a while yet regardless fella  :driver:

A3 is on the list as the next purchase though when I've lined up a house  :happy2: Was going to PM you about that ironically tonight!  :signLOL:
The GTI was always the one I wanted and will be around until I need to free up some expenditure. The A3 will be an economic choice, probably the 2.0TDi 140 for lower running costs.

Springs are just the 20mm AP's but judging by Beddie's and Truckies cars, they'll sit at the perfect height for me. I can't really go lower as my local roads are clearly some kind of Yugoslavian speed bump test bed  :fighting:

Been meaning to wrap the door pillars for ages and the wrap has just sat on my bedroom floor. Finally got round to it today with Martin (Drapoon on here) and I'm happy with the results. This was mainly done to protect the plastic as it scratches easily with a glass look finish and is usually the grab point for anyone closing the doors.

All photos are on the HTC, so quality is average.

Hey Pete, Where did you get the McGard's from, and how much were they please?  Also what thread length are they?

Cant remember what LED's I used, they were off the bay and werent a recognised brand, but they havent caused any errors and have the right colour light.  I had thought of using them as DRL but quickly came to the same conclusion that you just cant get a bright enough light to make them effective.

Nice couple of packages you have had then, when can we expect to see picks with them installed?

Thanks mate.  :drinking:

Performance alloys mate - details below. I did it all by phone to make sure I got the right stuff (very shaky about ordering the right bolts) and they were extremely helpful guys  :happy2: ;

8 M14x1.5 Bolt 17Hex 45mm Radius 2.75 21.99 17.50 3.85
1 McGard Lock Bolts 28017 33.30 33.30 17.50 5.86
£55.29
Total VAT Amount £9.71
Invoice Total

The McGard bolts were 44mm if I remember correctly. You'll see on their website how it all hangs together, but as said, ring up and get the advice. If you can, speak with William - he's got experience with Mk5 Golfs.
It was £65.00 delivered in total. I only need 2 for the rear axle so may sell the other 2 individually, but I'll see.

@ Matsu, thanks fella

I've given up with getting some nice sidelights now Rich, I'm going to stick with the ones I've got - I've had so bloody many!
You're right, they're not good as DRL unless it's the last hour of sunlight in the day.

Thanks - I plan to fit the latest bits on Sunday, few things permitting. New digital camera arrived this week so all is fitting in  :pomppomp:

Well....

Today was fitting day. Got over there in good time and got everything done with big thanks to my mate Tim. His skills and hospitality have meant that most of my mods are possible tbh  :happy2:

Put the springs on (fronts were a bugger), fitted the air box and the spacers were a piece of cake. I love how they've made the splits sit proudly - it now looks exactly as I wanted them to. I'm one mod away from it looking identically to the look I had in mind when I bought it, so it's massively satisfying to near completion of my 'project'. It's cost me about £4k in parts and fitting, but I've never lowered a car, polished my own car or put things like DVD/Sat nav in so it's all expenditure with loads of satisfaction

Barring fitting my Cruise, colour coding the rear diffuser + skirts, maybe upgrading my Hertz speakers, a Remap and refurb'ing the wheels, I think I'm there. It really drives nicely even with the few subtle changes I've added to enhance performance.

Before spacers shots:

This was the front disc of a Mk4 Golf that came in, had 4 tyres slashed which seemed some sort of vandalism attack - very unfortunate.
Then the lads took the wheels off and the lack of brake pads and discs were unveiled  :scared:

The pad was around 1mm thick at most and as you can see, there isn't much disc to make contact with! Good old rusty braking...

Looking good, doesnt look like flat ground so the rear left suspension is stretched, the right hand side of the car looks more like it should although possibly a little compressed. The spacers have bought the rears out as they should be they now look in line with the fronts!

Love it Pete!!!

Looks real good.  Suspension is spot on mate, and I am sure it will perform loads better.

Spacers make such a difference too I bet.

I love the contrast of silver and black against the Grey.

I really wanted a Steel Grey GTi when I was first on the hunt for one. I am happy with the Reflex Silver now, but every time I see the Grey, I love the colour.  :happy2:

Also,
Did you do the Passat window switches as well as the light switch mate?  If so what is the part number for the drivers side pair of switches?  I asked on the other thread, but there were quite a few numbers being thrown about, and it was a bit confusing about who was replying to who  :ashamed:
Don't want to order the wrong ones.

Thanks geezer ^  :happy2:

I bet Silver is quite comfortable to maintain scratch/dirt wise too?

I didn't I'm afraid, regarding the window switches. I purely went for the OEM Xenon look in the cabin as I retrofitted my Xenons and wanted the whole genuine appearance. Re-quote your original post mate if I were you - someone experienced will point you in the right direction I'm sure.

^ Thanks Rich & Monte  :happy2:

I'm happy with the results although being greedy, I would love the rear to drop another couple of mm

The cars now booked in for the rear bumper to be smoothed + sprayed grey. I might wrap the black lower section (around the exhaust) or buff it up so it shows up well in black to give that diffuser look. Also, the skirts will be smoothed + sprayed Steel grey.

Fitted the Carbonio;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv394%2Frdfcpete%2FSAM_0036.jpg&hash=14c5bf38a1c4568b2c50f129070b3902c978c00b)

I was unfortunately under the impression it would change the sound, then I learnt about going through the engine cover pipe etc and so on, but I think it'll stay as I'd say it's improved MPG by around 1.5/2.0MPG over a medium to long journey.
I can't feel any difference in response or the torque delivery of any kind, so I think all the fellas who say it doesn't do anything are probably spot on  :happy2:

Looks good though

Bit of dirty whoring:

The right sidelight is captured nicely here. They look great at night if parked up for example, but they're not quite strong enough in the day to be reliable DRLs. I've given in on trying to find OEM/aftermarket DRL's. I've not got the 30byte controller so OEM DRL function is limited, and none of the aftermarket stuff would suit my colour scheme or style theme. I'll stick to Xenons

Small update. Tried the turn signal DRL's to see what they look like on the Xenon clusters. They're nice a bright, that's for sure - this was confirmed when I was stopped at a junction and I could see the yellow beam on the car infronts rear bumper. They were only set to 85% as well.

I decided they're not for me though as they have to be activated manually, on the sidelight switch. I think they'd probably look a bit better on the Halogen clusters too in all honesty.

They didn't give me the unique DRL look like the later Audi's have, so they've been de-activated.
Another plus of Steel Grey, although it takes a real effort to make it look clean, it never looks particularly dirty at the same time. That's not been washed for 3 weeks and I think you'll agree it doesn't show it  :happy2:

I've noticed that my Splits look increasingly like the TDI and TSI GT 17" wheels so I think it's time for something a little more unique to my car and it's styling. I love the design of the splits, but they are a little too subtle and executive. If they were 19"s, I might have been able to pull it off, so expect some new wheels just in time for the really cold weather perhaps

Refurb and sale for the S-Lines I think  :sad1:

Picked the car up tonight. Rear bumper colour coded in Grey leaving the black diffuser and skirts done Grey too, all with the smooth finish;

Best I could do in the dark. More to follow once it's been cleaned.

Turinis are going on soon as well as wrapping the boot VW badge.
I'll then look at stage 1 options and a Dbilas intake and I think it'll be nearly finished

Cheers for looking.

....I've never heard anyone say that before on this forum! Can we quote you in a few months time?

It's looking so much better with colour coding - Goodness knows what VW were thinking of when they put a Ford Ka-style black plastic rear bumper on the GTI - It should never have happened.

Thanks Red Leader  :notworthy:
You're right - it is very supermini ish' having the rear black plastic. What I've never understood is that considering the Leon FR/Cupras, A3 S-Lines, S3's, Fabia & Octavia VRS's all came with some sort of colour coded rear bumper and/or diffuser, the Golf is supposedly the 'premium' hot hatch yet it never came with one until the Edition 30? I always thought that was a bit skimpy of VW.

And, you're right - who I am kidding? It won't stop there but I'll pretend for wallets sake that'll be it

Thanks Brooko. Good job too or you might not have approved

I like them but the splits are going tbh. My Speedline Turinis are sat in my friends garage so soon it'll be wearing some 18x8 lightweight silver shoes. I think they'll look good too having seen them on other GTI's. The SLTs are also wheels that 'appear' bigger than the splits do in 18's IMO.

^ They're still a little exclusive Simon, although I've counted three GTI owners and two S3 owners that I can think of on the forum that have fitted them. Mine may be going tomorrow if I'm a lucky boy  :innocent:

They're silver 18x8. Anthracite would've looked good against the Steel Grey, but I think darker wheels look too 'modded' and attract a bit of extra unwanted attention at least in my opinion, so I wasn't ready for a different colour yet. I think the Silver will suit my car just about right hopefully  :happy2:

Which ones did you go for remind me? Be sure to post plenty of pics!

I've gone for the silver, as well. Should be with me the middle of next week with any luck, then I'm gonna get new tyres fitted, as my current ones are awful budget jobs. Was quite tempted by OZ Alleggeritas, but didn't fancy anthracite rims either. My car's blue and I don't think they'd go.

Left the centre cap stickers off for now. I want some VW ones once I've established the size of the caps.
My Monza Centre caps were just a MM too big or so because of the small lip inside the rim hub.

Happy enough with the look. They sit more aggressively than the Audi wheels which is a bonus.

I think they look bigger than the splits and I'll keep these forever as I'm 99% sure they'll fit whatever I get next, which is undoubtedly going to be a VAG of some sort  May get another set of split wheels as an alternative for the same purpose as I did like that executive/classy look, just need to choose slightly better with the Mk5 appearance in mind.

Cheers for looking.

In my defence chaps, that was literally on the way back from having them fitted, so all dirty from fitting + the drive. The Splits were boxed up across the rear seats in the back when taken!

Thanks AP. Yeah, I'm not sure I wanted that look tbh, I just absolutely adore Turinis and always wanted a set when I had Renaults. Couldn't justify the costs back then. Might do them in Anthracite when I get bored.

I think the missing centre caps help add to that look and it'll diminish when they're fitted.

^ Indeed.

I need to do some separate pics with them on now. They're just posh transfers tbh (the Speedline ones that is).
BTW, in my haste I grabbed a set of these Si - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300506367319&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I think they'll be just the right snug fit. I'll confirm once tested  :happy2:

I was looking at caps today on ebay. There are some original Speedline ones on there, too, by the way. As they are pretty flat I wondered whether the stick on ones might be better?

^ The ones that come with the Turinis in the SL boxes are obviously genuine, it's just they're simply stickers onto black centre cap plastic. I can't imagine Speedline centre caps on eBay will be any different?

Anyway, few more shots from fitting and also with the SL centre caps fitted. All 5MP phone pics, cars filthy and there's no tyre lacquer applied - huge apologies in advance

Very nice uncomplicated design. I had a good look at some the other day on a Cupra.

Just out of curiosity do you know what they weigh (without tyres)? Cos they look fairly lightweight.

10.5kg, Robin, so not as light as they look.

Mine are on now, Pete, but it were dark and rainy when I got home, so no piccies.

....Genuine Monza 18's weigh 12kg (to nearest kg unit) and my OZ LeggyRita's 8kg, so those Turini's are a respectable weight which should make a slight difference to the drive feel. Monza 17's weigh 11kg.

That they are Robin  :happy2: That's exactly what I like about them. They're also easier to clean than the splits by a country mile, plus as mentioned they're also lighter and I've gained an inch extra rear track combined over the 7.5J splits.

Whatever I get next is all but going to be a VAG vehicle and it's very very likely to be 5x112, so these will be a long term purchase I feel. Change of car is a little way off yet.

Look good mate, nice and motorsporty!

Not gonna lie mate, you do re. the Xenons. They're one of my favourite retrofits  :jumping:

Couldn't get the Speedline caps out Si

Going to have a careful go with a screwdriver in shortly, but they're in so tight I gave up as I didn't wanna do any damage.
I'll post pics up once they're out and the VW ones are in.

Got yours yet?

Yeah, they're on and VW'd. Bought the sticky ones and fitted them to the original caps. They snap in quite violently, so I suspect it's a wheel off job to remove one again!

Yes, banging (gently) them out from behind will do the trick rather than risk alloy surface damage.

Had nowt but rain since they went on and this is a phone pic I sent to a mate via MMS, hence the poor quality.

(hope you don't mind a pic of my car in your photo thread, Pete? Just say and I'll edit it out!)

Hmm, Maybe.

They look very similar to me, plus the colour and bumper difference might make it appear differently. TBH I was hoping for another 5mm or so at the back but I really cba to change the springs now after all that.

I've stuck to the task and tbh I haven't got anymore immediate plans for it. I'd love it to just sit 3-5mm lower at the back  :popcornsoda:

A Revo stage 1 and a Dbilas FM intake keep floating round my mind, but for what I need it for it's always quick enough. Still, I know how good they are mapped...

Will do the rear badge wrapped black with a grey wrapped background once I stump up the courage to have a go.

Cheers for looking.

^ Thanks Rich.

The 20mm springs it's on don't really quite do it justice. I think 30mm H&R's would do the trick  :popcornsoda:

Cheers GB :happy2:

I'm very tempted. I just don't want any rubbing on the 18x8s with the new springs. I need to still have stuff in my boot or rear passengers?

Loving the pictures Pete.

You defo need to get the black plastics painted, really finishes the car's exterior off!

Out of interest, where did you get your OEM Xenons from? I notice you have the headlamp washers, were these already on your car or did you have to retro fit them?
Im looking into getting xenons as i think they really are a must have on a car such as the GTI, havent got washers so was contemplating a retro fit... a bit of a ball ache though if you ask me! Dont quite understand the legal requirement for headlamp washers but if thats the law then thats the law!

EBay for the Xenons. Picked them up for £360.00 delivered.
Car came with the winter pack so had the headlight washers.

This however is a mod I should have done a long time ago. I think it looks great for less than £10  :happy2:

^ Thanks Grizzle.

Few little updates;

- Found out that my Kufatec MDI cable interrupted all my attempted RNS510 upgrades, so disconnected it (Thanks Stu  :drinking: ) and upgraded to 2760
- Put the V7 maps on too
- Enabled ViM on the RNS
- Replaced my faulty RNS drive with a kosher one
- Got the car all sh*tted up at Latitude festival after a treacherous weekend for the car  :scared:, then gave it a mini detail/going over

My Dbilas has arrived and will be going on soon

Just some post wash pics as I've little else to update with for now:

Needs claying' fairly desperately as there's underlying tree sap and tar that simply won't come off without clay & tardis, so that's top of the list with fitting the intake  :happy2: Got a feeling Stage 1 + will follow...

Did I say I was finished?!
Cheers.

Pics are a bit big arent they Pete..... :signLOL:
You should come to Awesome on Sunday and make the most of a discount and get stage 1 done, hell, I may even get it myself, and then stage 2 as well.

Car is looking really good now, all the mods you have done are high quality, and none of those crappy £5 Halfords mods. :happy2:

Car looks awesome Pete,

I'm collecting my steel grey GTI on Saturday - if I can get it looking anywhere near as good as yours, I'll be a very happy chap  :happy2:

Hmmm, I'll see  Maybe PM you. Are you going for big power? I'll be looking for a progressive map at this stage.

Thanks for the comments too  :drinking:

Thanks Gareth. It's just a series of OEM+ subtle changes really that I always wanted to do. You should get yours looking as you want it fairly easily too in comparison  :happy2:

Looks cool against the colour of the paintwork.
Was going to do the same on my rear badge but decided to go for the MK6 badge instead.

Hybrid intake on - Dbilas pipes & Pipercross cone filter

No massive change. Sounds slightly different, bit more chatter and it feels like torque response is ever so slightly sharper.

The GTI has been replaced  :sad1:
Three + ace years of one of the best cars I'll ever own  Doubled my power from the last vehicle and owning an iconic badge was great.

A friend of mine now owns it so it's gone to a decent home which was more than nice to have as an option.

I spent the best part of 9 months on and off working out what I could replace it with, it wasn't easy whatsoever. I know lots talk of it being a headache as the GTI is such an accomplished all rounder'.

Looking at a property means the fuel bills had to be cut so this is it's replacement:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv394%2Frdfcpete%2FIMG_20120816_151750.jpg&hash=ff216efcf82492844720e4082b99173a9c839f47)

2010 A3 Black Edition 170 TDI 3 door. First ever diesel - very happy with it. Already seeing 17mpg-20mpg increases on par drives over the GTI on average which is exactly what I'd hoped for and it drives very well. Half the tax costs & some mods will see par stock GTI performance from what I've researched - it was a no brainer'.

Lots of plans for it so I'll do a thread in rides.

My only guilt with the GTI is that I didn't map it at all  :surprised:   :ashamed: Thou have sin.
This is a certainty for the Black  :happy2:

I still think I'm the only forum member ever to fit lightweight performance wheels to a car that was 99% engine standard   The Turini's look very tidy though so that saves a few blushes.

Cheers.
