Title: Air Conditioning Compressors
Post by: rdfcpete on June 18, 2010, 03:24:11 pm
Guys,

Are the air con compressors on all of the MK5 range the same, or does the engine type determine their function?

I haven't been able to find one on the net so far specific to the 2.0T engine. I'm looking for one for my 06' GTI and haven't got the money for a new one from the dealers  :ashamed:

Thanks,
Pete

Have you actually spoken to the dealer about the problem?

I only ask because mine went in earlier this week for "dead air-con", which turned out to be (as-expected) a dead compressor.  They originally quoted me £780+ but after speaking with VW head office and taking my full VW service history in to account (my car is an '06 and out of warranty) they reduced the bill to £130.  Unfortunately the parts are on back order so it could be a while before I get working air-con again but still... £130 beats £780 any day of the week.  :happy2:

I haven't dude.
I think you're very lucky there as I don't think they're legally obliged to cover that once the warranty expires, unless I'm mistaken? I think that's a fabulous bit of service you've received there.

Why did they drop the bill by £650, particularly as it's relatively easy money? I'm pleased for you but I think I'd be wasting my time trying at my dealership, on past experiences.

If anyone can confirm my OP with a positive answer, then I can repair the situation for £260.00 all in which is quite cool  :happy2:

Thanks.

I'm in the same boat as you fella, vw were not interested in helping me at all - 9 days out of Warranty! Vw dealership in Northampton btw

Possibly due to the fact I have no service history with them but my car is not due a service yet but I have bought all my parts from them thus far :ashamed:

I found a new vw unit for £255 & a patent compressor for £210 from the same company

Just trying to find a fitment guide now as my dad is a mechanic - no joy so far

Identical prob? Ah
Small world my friend as my local is Northampton as well, at Riverside Park.

I indeed found a brand new compressor for £255 ish' but eventually went for one from ebay off of a golf that had only covered 3000 miles. The part number was listed on the item listing and matched the one I need so all should be good. I think I'll have done it for £290 all in by the time fitting is paid etc...

If your dads a mechanic you should be able to get it done for very low cost mate?  :happy2:

Yep they are the muppets I went to - the bloke I spoke to suggested I trade my car in & give vw the problem back under the radar - yeh that would be a cheap solution lol!

My dads a ford mech of 45 years hence why I'm after a haynes manual or fitting guide to see the best way to tackle it. He's familiar with the td engine as it's fitted to Galaxys but not the tfsi

Luckily I got a free re-gas to diagnose the problem - vw wanted £100!

^ They sincerely suggested that? lol... What age is yours?
Mines an 06 on 70k miles now, so I guess its about the time things like this went. The guy I took it to (over at Elite in Northampton) said he'd done six compressors on six Mk5's in two weeks  :scared:

I'd imagine your dad would have the skills to tackle it if he's been in the trade for 45 years?

For a Haynes, I'd suggest Wilco or Triangular Auto in Wborough (if you're based that way). Both seemed two of the best for price.

Oh yes mate - proper tool. The guy I spoke to was more interested in telling me about his pimped x5.
He suggested trading it in to avoid the bill!
Mines an 07 plate on 30k & warranty finished mid April.
Are you replacing condensor & expansion valve? How much are elite charging for fitment?
Ta dude

On a side note here , when the compresor packs up , does it just stop working completely or is there a gradual breakdown ? (i.e. it can't make the lower temperatures).  The reason I ask is that I had my car recharged this week because I didn't think it was getting cold enough and taking a mile or so to even get cold but it still doesn't get the cabin cold. I seem to remember my previous gti (06) getting a lot colder and being able to cool the whole cabin.
Can you check function using VCDS ?  Anybody else had the same ?

Chris.

 I think that's a guy called Matt, works in Service. Told me about his X5 too which is why its amusing.

That's low mileage and fairly recent for something like that to go already didn't you reckon?
I'm not replacing those bits tbh, just simply the compressor which is sitting on my desk now  :happy2: Fingers crossed it all works as well as the guy at the breakers described.

Sent you a PM btw mate.

I just had my compressor explode on me! Shame I didn't read this thread before giving my local VW specialist the go-ahead to sort it out. Apparently it should come in at about £550 +VAT fitted.

Hi Neimad,

Where was this dealership?

Cheers

Sorry for the late replies... been holidaying in Cornwall... in the blistering heat, where air-con would have helped no-end... ah well!  :drinking:

The dealership is Crewe VW in Cheshire.  I've been taking my car there for a few years now -- they do seem generally quite good, though sometimes their "free valet" isn't the best... by which I mean I ended up with two lovely scratches down my bonnet once... never did complain about that. :sad1:

It does seem strange that they'd drop the bill by so much until you start poking around for information -- specifically this article (http://www.my-gti.com/1038) which says:

Quote
Volkswagen are covering replacements out of warranty, in Germany the parts are covered for five years and 150,000 km with Volkswagen covering 50% of the labour costs in the fourth year and none in the fifth year. In Australia cars have been covered 6 months out of warranty.

Although it references the situation in Germany, it does happen to be the exact same "deal" that was offered to me, i.e. 100% free parts and 50% free labour (as my car is now 4 years old).  Perhaps it's just a coincidence but I think that some dealers are just more on the level with their customers than others...

i bought mine from crewe vw!! i have a post up now how mines knackered for second time. anyway the aircon didnt work wen i bought it from them, the tool who sold me it gave us the old 'it will just need a re-gas'. i would of got em to sort it but live 200 miles from there, took it to my local vw who confirmed knackered compressor!  :fighting:

Excuse my ignorance guys, but what's the difference in these two compressors and also, are they right for my 2006 GTI? The VW part number I require is listed, but then it seems to be listed against a good few of them! (1KO 820 803N)

I'll give it a whirl BL but looks like from the other thread you kindly posted on, that it's outside my budget at a tonne more than the one I was looking at. I'm not sure what brand the one the europarts offer is, but tbh I want the best priced one that will fit my GTI. Not fussed on what brand etc... As long as it works, that's cool with me  :happy2:

Ta!
