Title: Is there any differences between 2005 and 2007 gti?
Post by: big_pete on June 20, 2010, 10:34:25 pm
Went to test drive 2 gti's today
1st 2007 gti drove very smooth and boosted well, felt quick
2nd 2005 gti suspension a little harsh felt like a non turbo car
Both standard unmolested cars
Was a little surprised did they come out of the factory different or is this down to specific cars ?

The MY05 would have the AAX engine whilst the 07 one the BWA engine.

Both should feel almost the same.  Maybe the 05 one had a torn dv.

Didn't the earlier cars have a few nice touches the "bean counters" took away on later cars?
Blue tint windows, alu ashtray cover, naked roof etc.

Plus agree on the torn DV. Makes a huge difference.

No, if you had a satnav you got sharkfin (like mine) but if you had a normal radio then it was a "clean" roof with no whip antenna.
Other changes are as people have mentioned, 10 speakers instead of 8, blue tinted glass, rubber finishers to the rear windows on three-doors, alu ashtray cover, slightly higher quality steering wheel leather, real aluminium strips in the interior, etc...

AXX engine also has a higher quality cam follower than the later blocks. JKM had a look at mine after 90k miles and said it was as good as new.

Not necessarily as some of the AXX engines came with the softer A version exhaust camshaft that got prematurely worn down by the hpfp cam follower. VW later change this to the harder B version.

its not big if you know what your doing, its about a 30min job, the first time i did it though it took me 3 hours!!

the DV is located on the side of the turbo on the KO3 cars, so you need to either put it on a ramp or axel stands. then theres 3 screws holding it in, and a sensor to unplug. once youve done the screwes it will just pull out.

or you can take the wheel and arch liner off and do it from the side, but ive never done it this way.

If it took you 3 hours it will take me a week...I think I'll give it to someone who knows what they are doing :happy2:

How can you tell if you have the S3 lowers?

Also if you are Leeds based can put you in touch with a great VW mechanic who does loads of work on the side.

DV would only cost a few £££ in labour.
