Title: Torx help
Post by: stealthwolf on June 21, 2010, 04:50:04 pm
Having finished work late last night, I had the day off. Went to sort some things out.

I was working on something, got my torx screwdriver set out and undid some screws. One of them won't come out. They are T10 sizes and the other screws come out fine. But this one screw seems to have slghtly rounded or something by someone else. The T10 won't engage the screw and T15 is WAY too big. T11 seems like it would fit but apparently it's a non-existant size.

Sooooooo....anyone have any ideas?

Carefully drill it out and get a replacement screw.

You could also carefully file the edges to get a socket on it.

Drilling would be my solution or if you can get one of them tools that you screw into the screw itself and then as you undo it tightens and  allows you to remove the screw.

Is it definitely a torx and not a star bit?

Where is it for?

I have found you can get sometimes force an allen key to fit the torx screw when they are slightly rounded not sure what size you need, but it's worth a try if you have some handy.

Drilling is a definite no-no. Some delicate(ish) electronic work. Can't file the edges since it's sunk into a recess. Might have a look at allen keys.

Seeing if you can get something like WD40 or the like at the threads and an allan key would have been my first thoughts as well.
If you have enough access, you could also try and use a chisel or sharp screw driver to put a couple of edges in to the head and maybe get a large flat bladed screwdriver in to it?

Is it the one on the steering wheel control module?

Try using a jewelers flat bladed screwdriver.

Got it sorted in the end. After someone mentioned allen key, i immediately remembered I had a set of star-shaped allen keys and the T10 fitted beautifully.
