Ah ha!! The wife wants a DSLR and I too are new to this field ...
:popcornsoda:
looked at the Nikon D3000 which is an entry level and gets reasonable reviews.

Studio, landscapes, portraiture, sports photography....
For example if he wants to take photos of cars at a circuit I'd be recommending a camera with a long, and very quick lens.

dpreview.com is a great review website to start looking at models.

Recommend Canon or Nikon. Also go for a decent optical zoom, not just digital. Check battery life expectancy!

I was looking for a lumix tz8 or tz10 or samsung wb650 or similar....how do jessops stay in business? They were like £70 dearer than Amazon, I know they offer expert advice etc but £70????

He's after an SLR so it won't have any sort of digital zoom anyway.

I absolutely LOVE my canon dSLR. It's never missed a beat. It's a 450d but it's a bit outdated now. I believe you can get a 550d now. No doubt it will be brilliant.
Love canon, great company, great product, great support ;)
