Title: Track inspired MK5 build.
Post by: Foz on June 29, 2010, 12:58:20 am
well my last few cars have been a bit, showy...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs45%2Ffoz-306_2007%2F019-2-1.jpg&hash=2bacfd6f55fd72a53300c0a6420fa788ac9c5826)

i decided i want a car that doesnt scrape the road and that
handles well, and looks half decent

bought as a standard car in Nov '09

55reg
42k miles
winter pack
leather

As i bought her, with the heavily kerbed rims...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs45%2Ffoz-306_2007%2Frichpics005.jpg&hash=60818ea7a9cfc920bfbe2dbcca22a524815d7ab3)

first modification was to help the engine breathe...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs45%2Ffoz-306_2007%2Frichpics012.jpg&hash=d5567da77b2b3e0b1040e300bd5f80c778ec6fa8)

then i thought it needed something  to release the gasses...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs45%2Ffoz-306_2007%2FIMG_5729.jpg&hash=9b813ab5c54d8fa36d9ddf3058a34ba515b990f8)

new exhaust needs a new bumper...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs45%2Ffoz-306_2007%2Frichpics123456001.jpg&hash=07cd43a5e4331bbad058089fd2e7d914c17f5b60)

by this point the state of the wheels was really annoying me. so i thought about how i wanted the car to look , and knowing i was going to be getting on track this year i decided on a track theme, my upgrade helping to emphasise the handling & power of the car.

new wheels...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs45%2Ffoz-306_2007%2FIMG_7729.jpg&hash=2af3169fd66ac287cf918d104d82595fec32b41f)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs45%2Ffoz-306_2007%2FIMG_7253.jpg&hash=3c0849c772070de77697c5b5592e1838564305e3)

at this pnint i realised how high the car sat, time for some lows in the form ok KW...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs45%2Ffoz-306_2007%2FIMG_7514.jpg&hash=d1209bac1ac872eb051c34374e1ec8f176639fd3)

the car was coming together, i decided a cage and stripped rear would look good. i had a company make a cage, but the design wasnt the best and i couldnt sit in the drivers seat properly...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs45%2Ffoz-306_2007%2FjordanHolt073.jpg&hash=dcaf3a28c7cc95e16d39f96d57e59c6a5bcd90f9)

so it was back to the drawing board. i measured a mates mk4 raceland cage and realised it would fit...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs45%2Ffoz-306_2007%2FBe3ddBQ2kKGrHqUH-C8ErfikbFCVBKCZoGM.jpg&hash=5b347c0ad16c1870419840de21a457283e549455)

so i bought one and trial fitted it...

with the help of a mata and a heater, we heated the welds and bent the cage so the diagonal bars sat 3" higher up, making them more visible from the side windows, and sprayed it red...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs45%2Ffoz-306_2007%2F008-6.jpg&hash=00dea922af43cce2caf56f3567b515cc2c061069)

so this is where it stands...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs45%2Ffoz-306_2007%2F20851_444613735069_517135069_636073.jpg&hash=f88ea6c3c91b79304fa3bd4621e0da966cbaa789)

all comments welcomed.
there are some further plans in the pipeline but this is my vision nearly complete.

very nice build, have you considered the WALK kit and maybe TT mk 2 lower control arms to aid the handling. RSB also  :happy2:

.
Love the red wheels on a black car :happy2:

I'm investigating a removable half-cage so I'm interested in seeing any pics of where the rear side struts junction through the 'wheel arch' cabin trim.

Looking good nice to see something different happening :happy2:

....Hmm, please don't tell me this is only a show-cage! :fighting: :sad1:

The thread title being "track inspired" I suppose might suggest that's all it is. Yours to do whatever you want of course, but.

thanks for the positive feedback.

as its my everyday car i decided not to do a 6 point weld in, so its a 4 point bolt in cage. its a 55 plate so going all out
will mean its not worth much when i sell it.

plans include....

R32 brakes
Vinyl wrap
Porsche GT3 seats
Stage 2 remap.

....That's exactly my thinking too - A 4 point removable cage. I've been talking to peeps who prepare race cars (mostly Mk5 Golfs) and they reckon a half-cage is adequate for trackdays. Once you start trying to fix a 6 point it gets messy and compromises the front seats and dashboard for a road car.

A custom rear panel with Interlagos is going to be made for when the rear seats are out. Full story with pics will get posted in due course.  :happy2:

had a look round yours on sunday mate... noticed little bits which made me think your
intentions were similar to mine.
what engine mods/power are you currently at?

....A pity we didn't meet and chat. Another time hopefully.

My engine mods? - Custom Milltek TBE, Forge Twintake, Forge DV, Neuspeed Turbo Discharge & Charge pipes plus Samco hoses, Revo2, all on standard GTI K03. Dyno 260 bhp.. Could get more power but I like the driveability and some headroom.

Suspension mods include Quaife diff, KW-V3 coilovers, Eibach ARB's, AP Racing BBK, S3 rear brakes, WALK, all corner weighted and setup by Volkswagen Racing.

I'm loving your red TT

thats an impressive spec list. wish i had more free cash to put to the mk5.

these control arms that were mentioned, do they give a noticeable difference in handling? and easy enough to fit?

....I've spent whatever on mods over a 5 year period, not all at once! There's plenty more such as carbonfibre bonnet and Recaro's. I don't want to know what I've spent in total but I'm not alone in this!

Re the TT wishbones, I recently learnt that they don't move the tyre top in but rather they move the tyre bottom outwards.

rear cage seems pointless to me . door bars are a 100% must i have going out in cars which have party cages . my mk1 has a a 6 point and thats the bare min i think .

cool car tho

....Not pointless according to two independent opinions from people who professionally prepare track cars including Mk5 Golfs. Obviously not as much protection as a 6-point but FIA standard full roll-cage on a road car used for occasional trackdays could be overkill.

Whichever roll-cage we each decide to fit, we hope that it's never put to the test.

Loving the wheels, its made me consider something similar for mine instead of the Monza's and i think the Red would work as well... hmmmmmm

glad people like the red wheels, was a bit of a hit / miss choice but with the other red parts they dont look out of place.
