Im getting to that point of gettin sick of paying tax and insurance and loads of fuel! So was thinkin of a bluemotion mk6? Has anyone had any experiences? Reviews? I think a white one would look pretty slick?
Mitch

Going from a GTI to a blue motion , i would rarther chew my arm off.
-
Cough* s3 *cough* to a bluemotion! Im sick of fuel bills!
-
You could always big turbo it
-
What about the MK6 GTD or an Audi A3 Black edition 2.0 TDI? I think they are basically the same diesel engine and both with enough tonk to make them fun. Audi S3 fun....ok...no...but pretty good. They are in the middle of going the full hog to a bluemotion and the out and out pace of say an Audi S3 or Golf R.
My friend has the Black Edition....lovely looking. I do think the build quality is a small notch up on the Golf and there are some great deals on the Audis. The golf being so new i think it might be tough to get much, if any, discount.
Audi S3 though.....i don't think i could part from one of these!!!

Going all the way to a bluemotion might be a bit of a shock to the system, as mentioned above a 2.0TDI hot version with the 170 piezo engine would be a much better option, especially mated to a DSG box which with a diesel makes so much sense with a shorter rev range, and the black edition A3 you could keep the quattro system as well, so it might still handle! As the bluemotion have skinny low grip tyres.
-
The other thing to consider is the MK6 Bluemotion Golf is like Rocking horse $hit as the delivery on them when I last looked was over 6 months!
-
I never realy thought about the A3 tdi's ect may have a look into them i do like the idea of auto aswell and become a propper 22 year old grandad! Lol what sorta mpg are people geting out of the 2.0ltr tdi's?
Mitch
-
New polo gti? Low tax and better mpg than a golf gti......
-
Mitch, what's going on you've only had the S3 a few months you can't move on from it so soon :sad1:

^^^ +1.
I see a Red 2.0 TDI DSG 'Black Edition' Sportback, with Quattro almost every day and it's f00kin lovely, if that helps?

^^^ Check this link, below... 50.4 combined, allegedly :happy2:

I dont have any experience with 170 or a quattro version, but I have 2.0tdi 140 DSG leon a good few years back and even hooning it around like a loony hard acceleration and high speeds on the mototrway it was almost constantly in the 40+mpg means you get more like 450-500 miles out of a tank!
One thing I will say is it isnt nearly so much fun, and the extra weight over the front wheels does give a strong tendency to under-steer, used to get ESP kicking in on small round-abouts when pushing on.
If your even going to consider it, then I would suggest a quattro version would be a necessity to help kick some of the torque to the rear wheels to help with the under-steer, and I personally would never own a diesel without a decent auto box as the shortened rev range makes it very un-sporty. Just my opinion mind! :signLOL:
I would also strongly consider trying to get one of the new CR engines as the refinement is quite amazing compared to the previous PD units.
-
Mitch, what's going on you've only had the S3 a few months you can't move on from it so soon :sad1:
:surprised: i know domo im just thinking of saving myself some money im sick of running costs of a car and its just so hard to save for a house at the min! i idealy want to move on to something eco friendly for a couple of years get my self sorted then jump back into something fun again!
im not 100% going to do this but either way it probs wont happen till atleast january?! i want to remap the S3 first see what that does i may decide to not worry about mpg and in all honesty when i remapped the gti i was slightly better on fuel? :stupid: arrrgggghhh ive got such a dilema on my hands!

If your a true Petrolhead Mitch, and enjoy driving, you'll wish you hadnt change to a derv. Ive tried and absolutely hated it.Cost me more in loss on trade in then it would of done if i stuck with what i had.
-
I came from a mapped Grande Punto 1.9 TD to the GTI... You'll reaaaaaallly enjoy the torque in the right band, but you need to short-shift like a MoFo...
Derv doesn't compare to petrol... :chicken:

Exactly why the only acceptable way to have some fun in a diesel is to DSG it! But it still wont be as much fun as a turbo petrol!
-
white GTD looks  but they are somewhat pricey , and you need to forget what second hand machinery you 'could' have bought with 24k!
-
Don't do it! I did the same last year, got rid of my ED30 and bought a A3 140 S-Line! Worst decision I ever made hence me being back in an S3 three months later :pomppomp:
-
I had an Edition 30 DSG remapped to 300bhp ... sold it and bought a Z4M Roadster .... and have sold that for a 320d coupe auto ... to save on costs !
I was getting sick of the fuel bill, even in the 8 months I owned the Z4M. Nothing wrong with the car at all but I wanted economy and auto for the first time in 25 years of driving. I have always had performance cars and this is the slowest car I have owned in 20 years!
Am I liking it ? Oh yes !! The 320d auto is nippy enough and 40+ mpg everywhere ... with the auto it is one superb car. No, it is nowhere near as quick as the Z4M let alone the Edition 30 but I am happy (and I can still remap )
Would I have changed from the Edition 30 to a Golf Bluemotion - in a word .... no ! Going from 6 to 60 .... or in the case of the Z4M, 5 to 60 ... to say 11 with a Golf Bluemotion would have been just too much to stomach.
Going from 5 to 60 to allegedly 7.8 with the 320d is about the best I can handle. Still enough go for decent overtakes but whilst retaining economy and £125 road tax ....
The Golf GTD or A3 170 TDi give roughly the same performance as my BMW ..... and I wouldn't recommend any less coming from an S3 ! You don't need to have a silly loss in performance to retain some fun which either of these (or a 120/320d) will give. Oh, and don't rule out the 123d .... having driven one they are stunning and still give over 40mpg.
Just my views FWIW
-
I'm thinking the same, going through some changes at work at the moment so don't want to commit to changing cars but if it settles down I'm off to buy a 320d m sport 3 series coupe. 650 miles to a tank, cheap tax and a car I really like, fingers crossed
-
I personally would never own a diesel without a decent auto box as the shortened rev range makes it very un-sporty. Just my opinion mind! :signLOL:
So it's not just me who thinks that then :happy2:

Why were you looking?

Mitch
Just get the S3 mapped Mitch, fuel economy on my ed30 has improved :happy2: if i stay off the loud pedal

The wife has a MK5 Golf Bluemotion 1.9.
Ive been using it recently since I sold my ED30, until something else comes along that I like (still undecided!).
Boring to drive. Just gets from A to B, with nothing in between.
I have average speed cameras to put up with during most of my journey to work as well now, so was no fun in the Ed30 either!
BUT.........
£30 per year road tax
Low LOW insurance
Regularly get 70-80mpg. One one work run the highest I ever got (70mph motorway, 50mpg on A roads, over 23 miles) was 86mpg!
Around £60 to fill up the tank, and one tank can easily do around 700+ miles (Computer reports around 800 but we've never taken it down so low to try out!)
So yes they are rubbish to drive, no fun at all, but if its money you want to save, its a good overall runner!
I plan to put all the extra money we've saved into the mortgage, as we are planning to move into a bigger house in a couple of years. the more I pay off now, the closer I am to the M3/RS4
-
I've got a golf MK6 GT140 CR Diesel, so no the full fat GTD, as a company car.
It's not balistic, but it's much more fun than the low power 105bhp 1.9tdi mk5.
It's very smooth for a diesel and pretty punchy - feels like it's got a lot more than 140 bhp tbh
It's also economical or very economical depending on how you drive. 40 mpg if you drive like a lunatic, 60 if you drive at a steady 70 mph.
It's very refined on the motorway, suprisingly quiet at 80 -90 mph inside.
Give one a try you might be pleasantly suprised! :happy2:
-
My Fuel econamy has actually dropped in this very hot weather on my stage 2 car. Im not running a larger intercooler so ive reloaded my stock map, untill this hot weather subsides to improove my mpg.As soon as it cools down, i will re-install my stage 2 as colder intake temps will help in improving mpg which generally the Bluefin map does improve.
-
I have a 2.0tdi 140 Audi A3, and it is the most boring car ever. I'm only 19 so didnt come from an S3, only a Mk3 golf 16v that had a few bits done and was RR'd at 170bhp. So it was a bit of a drop, but the 16v was nice and revvy, and fun to drive, but the A3 is just boring tbh. I needed better economy along with cheaper insurance though, so it suits its purpose, but if I had the chance to travel less then I would definitely upgrade to something newer + quicker.
-
Sell it and get yourself a house mate, then get another or something similar.
I sold my R32 last year to buy a property, I got myself a mini cooper s works, purely as it didnt lose a penny over the time i owed it and sold it for what i paid. Im now in an S3 and im 24 (as of last thursday anyway  )
-
Must admit i'm looking to get out of my GTi for financial reasons :ashamed: :ashamed:
I don't drive like an idiot but struggle to do better than 28mpg over a full tank of V-Power.
I've been looking at either an Octavia CR170 Tdi vRS with DSG or a Superb CR170 Tdi Elegance with DSG (how much car for your money :happy2: :happy2:)
Been for a thrash this evening and will miss the GTi SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much but needs must :sad1: :sad1:
-
Cough....know what you mean about better economy...
This is my current tank (and that's with nearly 45 miles already on the tank).

Oh, it's an old 2005 GT 2.0TDI remapped to 185bhp, and fully loaded. Not too shabby ?
-
Im running a candy 140PD Rocco with 19's, H&R -35mm springs, R rear lights, RNS510, Premium bluetooth, Forge shortshifters
Standard it gets MDI, RDS510, privacy glass, 18x8" wheels, better seats than a golf, better looks than a golf.
I have averaged 55mpg since the day I got it and get 600 miles+ to a tank.
Insurance=buttons
Tax=buttons
Its missing DSG unfortunatley.
More importantly its worth more now than the day I bought it - its a nice feeling

^^^ That was kinda my point. :happy2:
To be honest, the only brand I would now consider getting a derv is a BMW. We've had FIAT, VAG and BMW diesels over the last 3-4 years and the BMW dervs are by far the best.
Our other car is only a sh1tty 116d and even that's ok compared to the VAG 1.9/2.0 we've also ran. I tried to get SWMBO to insist her work give her a 330d coupe, but they weren't having it! I wonder why...
-
I had a bluemotion on demo for a week and ........ it was nice, the car itself felt good, the power was lacking but then it would be next to the cupra. on short trips like 3 miles it averaged 50mpg and on what i would call a short run at sensible speeds it averaged 62mpg, that was a 10 mile round trip, fast motorway work saw an average of 51mpg where the cupra averages 29mpg over the same route. The car had only covered 500 miles so i would expect all the figures to increase by 3-4mpg.
How quick was it ... not very, its quite high geared so to get any go you do need to drop down a gear but its got enough go to keep up with the traffic. The engine was smooth and quite, road tax is £0 and the spec is ok. Would i buy one, well if saving the planet was a concern then yes, it makes much more sense than a prius ( which was rubbish ) in act i'm now moving our fleet from Ford to VW and they will all be getting Golfs. Will they be getting the Bluemotion ..... no, i've picked the Match 1.6TDi with bluemotion tech, it doesn't have the bodykit but does have more toys, RCD510, cruise, armrest, hi line etc and the bluemotion pack adds start stop, yes you have to pay road tax - £35 but otherwise its still next to nothing. So yes i'd buy one ... BUT to change from the cupra would cost me around £7000 and that buys a LOT of V power
-
MPG = overrated in my opinion
Currently the fridge is on over 28mpg for the last 900 or so miles with my trip oop norf.
Anything more would just be greedy.

i agree, im making 28.7 over the last 1900miles. not bad considering that includes quite abit of logging(upto the speed limit of course ), dyno runs, and the usual fast road malarky.
-
Not had a read of all the replies but saw the 2.0TDI engines emntioned and I would second that if you are going to change. You will get great mileage and still have a little bit of grunt if you need it.
I dont know the exact power of the 1.6 Bluemotion but since driving a 1.1 I have found it very frustrating driving on motorways. So the 140/170 engine would be ideal if it was me.
The S3 though...that would hurt getting shut of it...killed me selling the Eddy :sad1:
-
Ive got myself in a right dilema! Im torn between more power now and mpg! Im going to remap the S3 i think then see where it takes me from there!
-

Don't go for MPG, I tried that and regretted it sooo much, remap the S3 and then fall down the slope like I am
-
If i were lucky enough to own an S3, i would do everything in my power to keep hold of her!
My brother has a stage 3 S3 and it is brutal fast! he still returns low 30s mpg driving normally. (keep her) :happy2:
