Title: Yay.... fitted my MDI today.
Post by: Norbreck21a on June 29, 2010, 03:52:08 pm
As title, mananged to pick up a brand new MDI unit for the centre console complete with USB and Ipod cables dead cheap off the bay, and then purchased the Kufatec harness direct from them. Total cost, just over £100.

Fitted it today, and it works great. The hardest part was removing the old ipod prep cable that I had (the one with the plug in "shelf" that emulated the CD changer, and then getting the new cable in. Did it eventually by removing the outer cover of the rear arm rest assembly.

Works like a dream, once I fathomed out how to turn up the volume on the unit, as it was sounding quieter than all the other sound sources. A quick trip into the setup menu on the RNS and setting the AUX IN volume to medium (it was set to low) worked a treat. Super happy.

Just one quick question, does everyone's default back to the [Song] folder when searching. Is there a way of getting it to search where it left off or setting a folder (say Playlists) ?

Aside from this little irk, I'm well pleased. The Kufatec loom is certainly PNP, and my Parrot handsfree working though it's own CAN harness plugged in a treat.

Even works with my Ipod Touch as well as my 80 gb 5th Generation. The earlier Ipod prep wouldn't work with the Touch, the Touch kept saying "unsupported accessory connected" ?

So much music, so little time to play it.......

Tip top bit of kit isn't it?

I also like Kufatecs stuff.
The only thing I'd say about the MDI is it'd make the RNS-510 the best machine in the world if it featured it out the factory, i.e. you didn't have to purchase it as a separate module  :happy2:

i got the mdi in today aswell i got the armrest shelf but i've taken it out of there cos i only have the normal armrest cubby, no ipod prep.

Does it come up has mdi on your RNS Andrew i know you still have an older gateway and didn't know if it would recognize it???

Well done by the way mate .. :happy2:

Darren,

Cheers mate  :happy2:

To answer your question, on the RNS a new button appeared at the top of the display on the right hand side (where the ghosted AUX was) that said "MEDIA-IN", and on the Highline it says "MDI" in the lower left corner, where it normally says either "SD" or "HDD".

Works a treat.

Also, read somewhere that the MDI control box part of the shelf can be detached, and the unit can then be fitted in the glovebox (if you had a car without a centre console) - maybe a solution ? I know that VW sell an MDI unit like this for exactly that reason and I believe it's the same part just without the shelf thingy around it ?

cheers

Andrew

Thats interesting as I bought Steve P's old MDI for the armrest but as I don't have the older Ipod prep in my armrest I'd have to buy the armrest internals with the cut out I need and the new ducting for the a/c. If I can detach the MDI plug and put in the glovebox I'd also save the space as well as money -  Do you know where there is a guide for this?

Can't find that actual page I was looking at Rob, but have found a few pictures that hopefully explain it. The MDI comes in the non shelf version apparently for a number of models in cluding the passat.

The shelf can be carefully removed from the MDI control box (it's a bit of a b*tch apparently) to leave this :

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg819.imageshack.us%2Fimg819%2F2194%2Fmdi02.jpg&hash=123138ccd99738def320895cd4e0d741e1b05baf)

From this:

The actual unit can be mounted just ahead of the ashtray out of site thus..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg820.imageshack.us%2Fimg820%2F8439%2Fmdi16.jpg&hash=886a269d04d623fc1160ba4487f9e2c7ef87da27)

Then using a VW IPOD/MDI extension cable the cable can be plugged in and routed though the small hole at the back of the glovebox

Hope this helps ?

Rob thats how I've now got mine but mine is in the little cubby hole on the right of the steering wheel,

There is 2 screws in the mdi shelf take them out then the plastic bar that goes across the mdi shelf needs prising up a bit to then pull the module out of the shelf.

Andrew I get the MDI in the highline but get MDI not Media-In on the RNS510?? not really bothered as long as it works which it does with my Nokia 5800 :happy2:

Morty,

I've been trying to release my MDI from the armrest mount for about an hour now and its driving me up the wall.

So far I taken the 2 T20 screws out and it won't budge you say pry the plastic bar up do you mean this one:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs337%2FRobGTIPhotos%2FMDI207smallclip.jpg&hash=398a3a823f98b073bd924674213a1aa4a474bf81)

PS Obviously this is not mine

EDIT: Just done it found two indents either side of the bridge and slid a small screw driver under each releasing the MDI from the mount.  :happy2:

Darren, maybe it's a firmware thing ? After all, I am running quite an oldish firmware with 1100, I suspect yours is much newer ?

Don't suppose by any chance they have implimented a search function yet using the same alpha numerical keypad they use for the Navigation address entering ? (Or am I just wishing ?)

Ah looks like I need to  get a longer extension lead mine is only 8inches long and won't get even halfway to the cubby hole from behind the a/c controls.

Ok I've been seraching all the usual suspects for an extension for the MDI ipod lead and the like of currys maplin etc haven't got it.

The only things I can find are these:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-RNS-510-iPhone-iPod-MDI-Extension-Cable-UK-STOCK-/190403612191?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Mobiles_Accessories_RL&hash=item2c54f08e1f

http://www.kufatec.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p1428_Audi-AMI--VW-MDI-Extension.html

Anyone know if VW or any other local retailer does one as I'd like to pick one up today while half the interior of my car is apart

Rob, I believe it's a genuine VW part available from the stealers with a part number of 000 051 447

Not sure of price though.

Just phoned my VW dealer and that part number is not recognised with them??? The only MDI ipod lead they can order is the one I already have which about 8 inches long (too short).

Rob, weren't you originally going for the arm rest fit or did I imagine that back when I was completing mine?

I hope you've made some progress anyway as I remember you posting on the thread I did about it back in Feb time iirc?

Rob,

That part number was posted up on my-gti.com and also appeared on vwvotex, although I guess I shouldn't be surpised that a stealer can't help you ????

Thinking about it, and looking more closely at the photos I've seen of it, it's got the male socket at one end and the female at the other of the special MDI unit arrangement, if you know what I mean. That means as it uses the propriorty VW connector, it should be a VW part.

Using the correct cable (i.e. VW's ones) will mean that you would have the MDI female socket in the glovebox, which you could then plug either the USB or Ipod cables into. If you are only ever going to use the MDI with an Ipod, then I think any bog standard Ipod extension cable will do. Plug the one you currently have (the short one) into the MDI, plug the Ipod extension cable (female to male) into this and hide the lot behind the dash or wherever you want, then just have the ipod cable coming into the glovebox.

I'd be prepared to bet that you could pick up an Ipod extension cable for buttons comapred to the actual MDI extension cable from VW.

Something as cheap as this should do ?

I get your drift..I saw the Mygti guide as well listing the same p/n and quoted this to the dealer who took a look and still couldn't locate it. I was going to go with one of the ebay leads although was hoping to buy something locally today so I didn't have to put my car back together and take it apart again when the lead comes from the bay.

Hi Sean

Good to see you back on here :happy2:
what have you got now?
The 2 metal clips slide inwards and release, however if they move slightly they become stuck. Happend to my MDI, had to use force in the end to get it out

Hi Eddie :) I got it out in the end, it was the small MDI box in the CD Changer mount thing, I just used a flat-head screwdriver and pryed it out! :)

A Seat Leon, not a FR/Cupra though, a 2.0 FSI (so the TFSI without the Turbo!) plenty quick though and a nice drive!

Hi just installing this kit myself in a mk6 golf.

Can the housing not be installed in the glove box? Or does the component have to be removed for glove box installation?
Thanks

I have a Seat Leon mate, there was no room in the glovebox for the whole unit, but I think the Golf has a space for it.
