EVENTUALLY got this in and workin as it should, after about a million attempts.
thanks to GTI_MAD and anyone else who tried to guide me in the right direction, I have fitted loads of sound systems, and handsfree kits to other cars I have owned, and never had as much trouble.
Turned out the ignition wire I had ran, had a break in it, if i had a multimeter i could have tested this but being a new wire i couldnt see that being the problem, after loads of different plug swapping etc, i decided to run a new wire and hey presto.

Not sure mate, I havent tapped into the fuse box yet, as i couldnt mind what one I used for the parrot handsfree kit.
if i connect the red wire from the back of the headunit to the red wire coming from the wiring adaptor I have to turn the headunit on and off manually, and it doesnt matter if the ignition is on or not.
dunno if this helps you any.

-
Can anyone help me out with this, was hoping to get this sorted today.

Jaffa,
Not sure how much you know and some of this may be teaching you to suck eggs.
1. The usual practice is permanent live and switched live. Most Radio's allow you to turn it on with just permanent Live.
2. This how to guide tells you exactly how to add a switched live http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62584 You need a repair wire available from the dealer.
3. You may find it easier to find a switched live off the back of the fag lighter. Avoid scotchloks they are crap.
Hope this helps.

How do I get into the back of the fag lighter?

pull the gear lever up and there's a couple of torx screws as far as im aware bud

I have found out that I got the ignition life from for the parrot handsfree sticking a spade connector in the empty fuse slot with the dodgy looking arrow pointing to it.
so my question is where do i connect the ignition wire that I have ran, to the back of the head unit?

it will be iver the red or yellow wire in the adapter plug you have fitted with bullets...... 1 will be for the ignition the over is for a permanent live

thought I had tried all the combinations, but always seem to end up on the same boat, that being, I can turn the head unit on and off manually no problem, but cant get it to turn on with the ignition.
do you think it will be worth while tryin to tap into a different ignition feed, is the one from the fuse box maybe not strong enough.
-
na it should be fine tbh

hmmmm,
the yellow wire says, 12v battery, and the red wire says ignition, do I plug the wire I have ran into the headunit instead if the red wire, or aswell as, pluggin it into the wee loop coming off the red.
can see me payin someone to fit this for me, :signLOL:
-
try goin straight 2 the head unit on its own if not plug in2 the link wire and connect the stereo wire up2 the other half of the link(looped wire)

VERY NICE

just eventually got it fitted and workin this morning, so not really had a proper play about with it, it was quite expensive, but my other option was the RNS510 which everyone has, and by the time u get the module for the ipod, and bluetooth, its probably not that much more expensive. plus its more expandable than the RNS
I am not sure if any1 else on this forum has it, so could be a little more rare.
Will have a little play about with it, and see whats what and maybe right up a review on it. have never used an standard VW satnav so wont be able to compare it.

Looks great. :happy2:

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but I just fitted this system to my car. Jaffa, where is your GPS antenna located? Mine is a bit unreliable just now and was considering moving it to the front of the dash
