Post by: Mako V12V on July 04, 2010, 11:54:01 am
Can you run out of fuel when your computer tells you you've 0 miles left or how much further can you travel?

I got mine down to zero miles and put VAGCOM on it to see what the tank reading said and it was fluctuating between 3 and 4 litres, so it wouldnt have gone a great deal further, guess it depends how empty the tank can actually get

In old money - that's nearly 3/4 Gallon @ 30mpg another 20 miles at least.

Supposing you are driving like a Granny so you don't run out 30 miles plus

I did remember reading somewhere that the fuel warning light was supposed to be @ 50mile range for all Euro cars.  So you can at least get to the next service station/filling station.

I can vouch for being able to travel more than 40 miles on zero.  Its a long way over Rannoch moor by the way...

I got 200 yards from the petrol station then went to zero & ran out. It all depends If u have driven v conservatively prior as it goes by the previous fuel consumption over the last 15 miles/ mins.
Drive like u stole it then like a granny on zero could give you 30 miles & likewise drive like a granny down to zero & the computer doesn't lie, trust me! Pushing your car ain't fun!

Had a spirited drive to Harrogate and back on Friday, with fuel warning light on.

Light came on on Thursday on way out of Leeds to home, so about 6 miles with light on, in rush hour traffic.

On Friday Harrogate & back with some city centre running round - dropping better half off shopping etc.  Way over 40 miles return.

So in total easily 45 miles probably closer to 50 miles.

Filled up and the pump first cut out was 52.89l  got just shy of 54l when rounded pump up to a whole pound...   So tank must have been really empty.

Anybody looked up "Hypermiling". Prob spelt wrong but you get the idea.

Was/is huge over the pond.

Some weird techniques. And some solid advice if you are into max mpg or running low with no station in sight.

Me too - I'm down to 5 miles and have to drive 10 miles before getting to a petrol station after work tonight... I do it quite often though - I think there's about 25 miles of careful driving left in the tank when it says zero...  :happy2:

Here's the result:
Set off on 5 miles. travelled 4 miles then the indicator went to zero. Drove like a granny - short shift, free wheeling and got to the petrol station a further 6 miles away.

Btw, i normally get this time of year around 32-35 mpg on my way to work. That morning i managed 42mpg!!  :driver:

So how much fuel did you get in? How much was left?

I never fill up as you're carrying the weight around of a full tank lol.

Just put £25 in which didn't even get half way!

When they did the run on top gear. I remember them saying it more eccinomucal to let cars coast in gear. No fuel is used as momentum keeps the engine turning.

Don't know how true this is.

Put in 53 litres of fuel when I got to the petrol station last night! Phew! It's annoying though because my journey to work is only 10 miles so I set off yesterday on 30 miles left, drove very sensibly (boringly) and yet it still ended up on zero when I was going home... Stupid thing
