So after talking myself out of it for the last two weeks I took the jump today as I could not wait any longer and fitted my new RNS 510 version C LED !
Thanks to everyone who pointed me towards the guides and do's and don'ts !
I have never attempted anything like this before and am usually the one who pays a garage £30 to fit it !
Now everytime I look in the car it feels that little bit special that i have acheived something myself !!!!!
So onto the RNS, I have a 2006 56 Golf GTI - can gateway not known but im guessing I should have battery drain, but lots and lots of communication with VRS Carl we feel they may have solved this with the 2680 firmware (which mine has)
So call me a test case but fitted this morning, drooled for 1 hour, drove for an hour ! then parked in drive since 10 am !
The battery has not gone dead yet ! but i will let you all know !
So again big thanks to everyone on the forum who helped me do this ! and VRS Carl (who offered to fit it for me) I would still like to come over this weekend to get coded properly if ok with you !
Thats if I dont have a dead battery !

Youthful Exuberance :signLOL: :signLOL:
Well done and yes no problem for getting it coded properly. It may not need it but no harm in checking :happy2:
My car was left for 3 weeks whilst on honeymoon (i have K revision gateway) and mine was fine

PM me when and where to meet !

Be interested to know how that goes Carl and britishlion. As would like to upgrade firmware on mine, but have been holding out until a new can gateway can be sourced, Carl I assume it wont matter about the hardware its just the firmware version?
-
where did you fit the GPS antenna pls?
-
I threaded it through all the parts then attached it just under the window air vent, it is stuck to the vent flap !
fits perfect and 8/10 sats !
Ill take some photos to show you
:happy2: :happy2:

Can Gateways are available on Ebay
Can Gateway Clicky (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAN-GATEWAY-1K0907530AD-AUDI-VW-SKODA-MFD-RNS-UPDATE-/170479880670?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_GPSSystems_GPSSystems&hash=item27b16489de#ht_2862wt_1139)
As for the firmware. 268X or above supposedly sorts out the battery drain. Because 266X was a beta it was never intended for release but someone got hold of it and released it. In 99% of cases 268X or higher sorts the problem. But there are one or 2 cases where it is still a problem.
I did think i had it recently but it turned out to be a wrongly wired up Parrot Kit keeping the car live.
-
Oh and A version MFD3 can't go above 268X firmware without the firmware being modified quite a lot.

Cheers carl, it was more the funds required but thats alot cheaper than ive previously seen, and I might give the new firmware a bash to see if I can get away with it! Hopefully britishlion will still have a driveable car by the weekend and that should confirm it with a second case.

You are not a man until you can get the engine cover off without warming the car up and without cracking/breaking anything!

Well done Britishlion glad you like the RNS 510 , best mod ever I'd say.
I bet you catch that modding bug like I have, youguys on here don't help either no discouragement whatsoever!! :signLOL:
Wouldn't know where to start if it wasn't for this forum, keep it up lads! :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
-
Honest to god !
I was thinking last night ! what next ??
remap (would the girlfriend notice)
bigger brakes ??
HUUUMMM !!! the list is endless !
The RNS is amazing ! best money I have ever spent !

Very Interesting thread this. I'm a bit like RICHN83 here in that I'm running a version 1100 firmware in my Rev B unit, as my GT TDI is a 2005 model with a lowly revision "E" Can Gateway.
Would love to get a later firmware and have the larger SDHC card support and road speeds without having to shell out on a new CAN Gateway.
Will watch this thread with interest.......

Like I said in the top of the thread, this is a Version c LED running 2680 !
Just need someone who has had the battery drain to tell us how long it took to go dead ???
:happy2: :happy2:
-
24 hours and ok, that certainly sounds like good news, I never managed to find the exact answer to how long it took to die, and I suppose it would vary on the condition of the battery and recent usage, long journeys to get battery topped up etc. But it is certainly looking good, so fingers crossed! :pomppomp:
Will give it too the weekend and see how your getting on lion :chicken:
And it is the best bit of kit, if you havent get yourself a copy of the v6 maps with speed camera positions, its a very useful feature especially when considering over-taking maneuvers on country roads that you dont know! :scared:
-
It has the V6 with speed limits but dont know about speed cameras ?????
can it have this ??
I have not been near any to even find out ??
-
P.S If it does not drain my battery please can you all transfer the money you were going to spend on new Can Bus Gateway's into my account, would be great to have some holiday money !!!

-
it needs to be added to the map file, as a Point Of Interest file its not like having a road angel or anything but it displays the position on the screen.

Do i do this on the sat nav itself ???
or do i need a disc ? my maps was already on the hard drive with no disc !
-
You would need to replace the map file, which is a disc that you install that can then be used to over-write the HDD map file. I have a copy which I used for mine. I will still need it especially if I update the firmware, but can try and arrange to either lend it to you or if your local meet up to install it.
Would only charge you the cost of a canbus, that I didnt have to buy :signLOL:
-
Ha Ha Ha !!!
mate that would be great ! actually VRS Carl is coding this for me Saturday so i will PM him and ask if he has a disk ??
If not (as i know he has a Skoda so may be different) im in cheshire??

Hi guys sorry to threadjack but on topic. I am contemplating buying 182s revA with software 2680. I have a MY06 gti, so most likely the old canbus. From the above I'm confused whether I would need to downgrade the firmware to 1100 to avoid the battery drain issues or not? And if I do is there any real features I'm going to lose out on.
I'm thinking I should hang around for the revC with the led screen, take it the display is superior?
-
You will lose
Speed Limit Display
SDHC Card support (will only be able to use 2Gb cards)
Voice control (if you have the hardware fitted)
Display Off Clock
Speed Improvements
Visual Balance & Fader
Plus a few others i can't think of at the moment.

I dont know :stupid: :stupid: VRS Carl or Darren would be able to answer you on the software side !
I just took a jump with Carl's expert advice !
With regards to the screen I have not seen any other screen but can honestly say the LED is brilliant !
Darren has offered to fit it for you I seem to remember from the for sale thread, so you honestly have the best in the business to assist you !

For the price of the unit and Darren fitting it is well worth the loss of these functions as you have a 20 gb HDD ! SD is not that important !

Personally I would just go for replacing the canbus rather than down-grading the unit, I havent seen an LED screen to compare but you wont be dissapointed with the older screen, so it then comes to cost and supply of an LED screen unit.
Probably worth speaking to Darren as he will doubtless have seen, and taken both units too pieces already and know everything you need to :happy2:
-
:happy2: yep but the timing wasn't right sadly. If I go for it I will ask nicely when he is available. I've got the mfd2 already so i was hoping for a simpler plug and play. I do believe however I may need do some coding. I'd rather not "downgrade" it looks (thanks Carl) that I will lose a few features there.
I'll talk to Darren later. :happy2: thanks guys.
-
If you have MFD2 then you shouldn't require any coding. But check anyway.
You can get the LED versions on EBay for around £500-600
A new Canbus is circa £85 on EBay for an AD Version (thats one of the latest ones)
-
Carl,
The visual balance and fader was introduced at 1100 as I have that on mine :happy2:
All the others you mention I did indeed loose when Darren downgraded my firmware to 1100, but to be honest, apart from the SDHC support, I can't honestly say I've really missed anything.
-
I was doing it from memory :sad1:

^^^^^^^^
address blanked out by music just in case !!!!!!!!
-
Update for all, no battery drain ! car started first time again this morning ! going to run it into the garage in a bit and see if they can see if it has used anything ! just for everyones piece of mind, but!!!
it looks like VRS Carl has saved a lot of people money on Can bus upgrades that are not required with 2680 firmware and above !
-
Looking good there Britishlion glad you're enjoying the RNS510 LED and NO battery drain issues too,I bet you over the moon with the unit.
Does yours have video in motion as well?
Lee :happy2:
-
Dont know ! :stupid: :stupid:
Ill try it this afternoon on way to garage !
-
Nice, glad its all going/gone well with the battery issue, most batteries now adays have a indicator as to the charge on them, if you remove the battery cover there should be a clear plastic circle with a ball at the bottom if the balls green then your good, and the rest of the instructions should be on a sticker next too it, but would have thought it would be dead by now. :happy2: :congrats:
-
G'friends just nipped out !
When she gets back i will check and let you know !
i'm so chuffed I took a risk !
:happy2:
-
Just stick a movie dvd in and try it out obviously you're eyes are watching the road ahead! :signLOL:
-
That LED RNS looks superb... always something new to lust after
Cheers for the info on the software update, the battery drain issue is the reason I've avoided updating my RNS. So I should look for firmware update 2680 then?
May as well update the map while I'm at it...

This is what VRS Carl believed to be on this update and he has been proved right !!!!!!
At the moment ! (i need to check the battery before we have a party)
:jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove:
-
Soooo...sorry for being thick can someone possibly tell me if my thinking on this is correct?
An RNS510 with software/firmware version 2680 on it will NOT cause battery drain issues on an older GTI (I have a MY06).
Does the version of the RNS matter in this regard? I am looking at getting a Version A..... ? Which I believe is already upgraded to this level.
If so, then I can effectively plug and play on my car which is foooking magic... :jumpmove:
-
version A running 2680 ????
I dont know about the hardware version but wait for VRS Carl he will advise for definite !

Don't want to pi$$ on anybodys chips, but I fitted an RCD510 two weeks ago and didn't upgrade the Can gateway on my '06 GTI. I used the car every day for the following week and the battery was fine, until last saturday when I didn't use the car at all. Went to start it on the sunday morning and the battery was completely dead. I've since taken the fuse out for the radio and am waiting on my local VW 'specialist' advising me whether or not I need a new Can gateway or otherwise.
Can anybody on here tell me whether the RNS510 and RCD510 are similar in terms of Can gateway and Firmware requirements?? I can't stand driving around without music!!!
Cheers lads.
-
:surprised: :popcornsoda:

From the research ive done, you will need to as its a factory release not an update it will wipe your HDD including the maps. full info along with download on my-gti. :happy2:

They are similar BUT you can't use RNS510 Firmware in RCD510. You would have to obtain a firmware disc for the RCD510 which apart from VW i don't know where you could get one (thats even if the dealers have it as they generally don't do firmware upgrades unless it's advised by the manufacturer)
You can always put in a new gateway but i can't guarantee that will fix it

Have you any idea what Can gateway/part number I'd need?

Try this Link
Can Gateway Clicky (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAN-GATEWAY-1K0907530AD-AUDI-VW-SKODA-MFD-RNS-UPDATE-/170479880670?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_GPSSystems_GPSSystems&hash=item27b16489de#ht_2862wt_1139)
Or if you don't trust the seller then the part no. is 1K0907530AD (although the last 2 letters may now be AF) take that to a Dealer and they will tell you wether it has been superseded :happy2:
-
All RCD 510s that I've seen have always caused a problem with the battery drain unless the gateway is L or above
I've only ever seen a firmware upgrade for the RCD once, and that doesn't appear to be floating around anywhere at the moment

Thanks again Carl. Much appreciated. :happy2:
Thinking more about this, would VW themselves not be able to sell me the correct part, presumably at a much higher cost? :scared:
Also, surely they'd be able to tell me if installing the new Can gateway would actually solve the problem? Only trouble is that I bought the RCD510 off Ebay, so VW may not want to touch it. :sad1:

Cheers Camel. Pardon my stupidity, but can you clarify what you mean by 'L or above'?
-
L is the version of the gateway
They used up all the single letters then went to AA...AD and now they are at AF
-

Gateway from the dealer is about £150
Unless you are lucky and have a technician at the dealer that really knows his stuff, doubt they will have a clue. Plenty of information on the internet which all points to upgrading older gateways resolves the problem
RCD510s were never installed in the Golf V from the factory, so it won't be in their knowledge base
I've helped upgrade two gateways a C and a E to a S and a AD for people who have fitted RCD510s and they no longer suffer from a flat battery
-
Thanks again for all your help mate. :happy2:

Looking good there Britishlion glad you're enjoying the RNS510 LED and NO battery drain issues too,I bet you over the moon with the unit.

Lee :happy2:
Just checked this unit does not have Video in Motion !
Cuts off over 5 mph
:sad1: :sad1: :sad1:

There used to be a way of getting it to work but not sure if it was removed in 268X firmware.
I'll see if i can dig it out and show you later :happy2:
