HI all, Had my RNS for about 6 weeks now and generally it works perfect.
Just occasionally though I've noticed that if for instance I've been listening to for instance, the Ipod via the MDI adapter on car switch off, when I re-start the car, (sometimes only), It will restart on either Radio or SD card or HDD source, not Ipod where I left off ?
Also, a couple of times when I've been listening to the Radio, upon restarting the car, the Radio screen comes up and displays the last station I was listening to, say Radio 1, but the sound that comes out is from another source (say MDI). Upon hitting the media button, it switches to the Media screen and carries on playing the same track, and hitting Radio this time, does switch the audio source to the Radio.
As I said it only happens once in a while, and I stilllove the unit and wouldn't change it for the world, just wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar ?

Not noticed this. What revision is the unit? Which version of firmware are you running? Where did you source the unit from?
-
Hi Andrew it does that on mine I put it down to the slow processor in the unit, apparently the SSD conversion speeds the whole thing up and you get a bigger hdd space, I just need to source an SSD for reasonable money :happy2:

I have noticed twice now since installing my MDI that track being played is the not the track selected and displayed, the one being played was about 2 or 3 behind it in the playlist. I tried replicating the same problem but the next time round it plays and dislays the right track. Also noticed once or twice that the occacasional random tracks sound distorted while other sound fine. Any ideas?? FW udate??
Whats the SSD conversion?

Hi Rob the SSD coversion is basically taking the original RNS510 hard drive out and replacing it with a SSD Solid State Disk which apparently make it faster to start up and use.
Rob do you or have you done the update for the MDI? There is a file on the VW website regards updating the mdi but will need to dig it out.

Like I said Darren, it only happens once in a while so no real biggie for me really, I can live with it.
One more thing that is starting to bug me a little, is that more than occasionally, the MDI input resets it's input volume to minimum. If you hit the set up button, then select [MEDIA], there is an option for the AUX input level, LOW, MEDIUM AND MAX. I have it set to medium as it gives a nice punchy sound with good bass and zero distortion.
Sometimes when I get in , the Ipod sounds very quiet, and if I go into the setup menu, even though it still says MEDIUM, it's actually reset itself to MINIMUM. this can be confrmed by actually selecting Minimum from the drop down list, the Volume Level doesn't change, but then selecting MEDIUM, the Ipod comes back up to the correct volume.
Maybe my RNS is haunted by JPC's presence as he didn't really want to get rid of his RNS
On a more serius note, maybe all these issues are just due to the fact that I'm running an older firmware on my "B" uit (FW 1100). Perhaps I need to get some money laid down to replace the CAN Gateway with a later one (to avoid the battery drain issue) so that I can run that later firmware's that hopefully cure these issues ?

I don't know about the update, I've certainly not done it. It's Steve P's old unit. I'll PM him and ask him and let you know.

I never updated the unit so I would follow the instructions on the my-gti.com on how to do this :happy2:

Ok - thanks for dropping in and answering :happy2:

Is this the best version to update:

Any ideas on how to do this without the USB interface on the MDI, as I've got the ipod lead, and the MDI is mounted behind the glovebox so can't easily exchange the leads in any case.

It needs the USB lead and a memory stick to upload the firmware
-
Damm I was hoping that wouldn't be the case as its glovebox out time again and I have to buy the USB lead. on the plus side I have a memory stick
-
Interesting. How do you find out what firmware the MDI unit is currently running ?
-
I had my firmware updated by the dealer a week ago. He was kind enough to give me the latest vw tech bulletin regarding common faults on the 510 & firmware fix. I scanned it as a pdf & sent it to MortyGTTDi, but pm your email address & I'll send it out to all who want it. It's sub-700k size. :happy2:
If there's an easy way to post a pdf onto the forum for all to access, let me know.

PM'd you Lou.

ditto

Ok guys you should have them via email. I also have the manual in pdf format if you want it.
-
Got it thanks. The manual too would be good
Cheers
