Title: Lacquer peeling?
Post by: TANNER on July 15, 2010, 10:18:49 pm
I have noticed the top corner of my wing where it meets the bonnet on the passenger side (hope I have explained that ok!) has started to have Lacquer peel. Ive never had this on any previous cars and are worrying it can only get worse?

What can be done to stop this? i have been looking at JPC's detailing work which looks like miracle work to me! Could detailing prevent this getting worse or is it going to take some spray work to correct it?

Any advice appreciated as I plan on keeping the car for a good few years and want it up to my usual shiny standard!
will try and get a pic of this tomorrow.

Cheers
Jon

Thanks Dru, was this after the 3 year warranty was up?
I will chance it and see what they say after work, shouldn't be peeling on a 5yr old car.

The paint and body work will have a longer warranty might be worth giving the manual a read, but it will be subject to the relevant inspections having been carried out and obviously it not being subject to self inflicted damage, so worth reading up then visiting the dealers.

If im right then the bodywork warranty is for 12 years on VW. Certain criteria is to be met for valid claims

- Paintwork is all original
- Service is history is all main dealer

The dealer will arrange a paintwork inspection to confirm original paintwork then look at the matter further.

Are you the original owner?

Yes, the bodywork is 12 years, but the paint work is 3 years.  :happy2:

Thanks for the info everyone!

no unfortunately I've only just had the car, I would like to think it would be immaculate if I had it from new.

I had looked through the warranty document this morning and it says about the paint for 3 years and bodywork 12 years.
I will give it a shot and see what they say.

I'll post my findings in case anyone has the same issue.

It may have had new paint at some time , but could be the original paint, i have a paint gauge that could tell this, i do wonder what those rub marks are on the plastic around it though ?

Not a clue what they are either, hopefully not signs of masking or removal for respray. The warranty guy from the dealer is on holiday so going back next week for him to have a look at it.

Quick update: went to my local dealer (Stourbridge) to see the warranty guy, advised of my issue, he asked how old the car was to which I said 5 yrs, with a big smile he told me any paint issues are only covered for 3 years and corrosion would have to be rotting from the inside out enough to poke a pen through it! So basically it's not there problem :booty:
he made no attempt to look at the peeling when asked, just happy to wriggle out of it. I shall look into getting it sorted the same time as I can afford colour coding I think.
Thank you VW. :congrats:
