Title: DV Fitting
Post by: Chris on July 19, 2010, 10:24:10 am
How easy is it for a DV to be fitted or is there anyone near staffordshire who can fit one for me

Needs to be on ramps, or axle stands at the very least, the turbo is at the back of the engine near the bottom. Its a half an hour job for a garage with a ramp.  :happy2:

ok cool, just hope this cures my lack of boost and hissing when accelerating

I would be surprised if it never, 99% of boost problems are down to the diaphragm type DV, you could also give all you pipe work a check to the cooler as they can come loose or perish a bit which will give you boost drop off.  :happy2:

As TC says its a straight forward job.

You will need the following tools though before you start

T20 & T27 torx bit for the engine undertray

5mm or 6mm hex Allen key or bit for the DV which is held in by 3 bolts (beware there isn't much room for a socket set and you will need an angled one to do it properly) I find a long Allen key the easiest way. The reason I say 5 or 6mm is I have come across both size bolts holding the DV in but the default is 5mm iirc

It will take you about 45 mins to do yourself.

I would stick to OEM too - but whilst you are at it check your turbo intercooler hoses too.

I changed this the other day on mine, it took me a bit more than an hour.  My DV was held on with three T30 bolts.  I didn't bother taking off the engine undertray, and the main issue was that there was limited space around it, so I had to move the bolts about 10 degrees a time, whilst lying on my back with one arm through the wheel arch and the other straight up.

It made a big difference to my car though.

Is there a How To guide for doing this yourself

for a GTI !

No but it's easy enough to do Stefan

Just put car on Ramps/Axle Stands
Remove under tray
Turbo is on rear drivers side of the engine. DV is attached to that.
Remove 3 bolts holding it in. Replace with new DV and then refit under tray (make sure you reconnect the elec connector)

Job done. Will take around 45-60 mins to do yourself.

How about jacking up the car driver side, removing wheel, take off wheel arch lining and get to it from there? Any easier?

Right, just fitted my new valve and as the churchill dog says "ooooooooooooh yeeeeeeeeeesssss!" :driver:
New and old. (hole on old green one, bottom left)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fi30%2Fgar34%2F24082010034.jpg&hash=b1f82ece68407aca86ed85cd2b719ff9183b9166)

Car now pulls like it did when I first put the bluefin on.  Mine had one pretty big hole in it as you can see from the pics. (held open with allen key!)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fi30%2Fgar34%2F24082010036.jpg&hash=26107d0d1db668286e6c9e9f774dfef37c984de9)

I did not remove any wheels or covers or trays to access the valve. Maybe mine are missing? :ashamed: I did however use the pit at my parents house. (left over from the old stock car days)  Pretty awkward to get to the top bolt but if you persist you will be fine!

One allen key and some tread lock - job done. :happy2: well under an hour and I wasn't sure where it was!
With Valve off.

New valve on. (tried to show it in relation to the front drivers wheel)

HTH

Ha! David Bailey I aint!   Next to the small silver pipe, The red wires are the plug that fits in to the DV valve. The plug points downwards.

Like I say tried to show the location of the DV valve in relation to the front wheel. I basically had to go under the car and look for what I thought might be the valve. Easy to find , just a little awkward to get to. :drinking:

Nice link thanks. I would add though, after reading that link, that you don't need to remove the splash guard to do the job if under the car. He is right about the bolts though

Also important to note, that guide is for a US car, so he mentions jacking up the passenger side. For a UK car it's the drivers side.
