Title: How to confirm HPFP?
Post by: S2 Ant on July 20, 2010, 08:40:30 pm
Another trivial question asking for help....

Recently bought an APR HPFP from the bay - item is a complete fuel pump with upgraded internals.... apparently.... How could i confirm the parts are what they are said to be?

Is there a test or are any parts stamped differently?

Thanks

i could stick a sticker on a pump.  it doesnt make it an APR one though.

@ the op  speak to JKM or awesome GTI.  they deal with apr pumps and might be able to help you.

Post a picture of it

But the only true way would be to separate the piston from inside and see if it's larger than the OEM one

or log the rail pressure before and after fitment

yes but where would you get the right apr sticker from. If there is no sticker then we can know pretty much straight away that its not a APR pump.

There are other differences to the APR pumps compared to the others but the sticker is the most obvious, and once we have ruled on the sticker we can then move on to the more technical bits if necessary

I've sent a message to Awesome to see if they're able to help at all.
It should be internals only, so sticker or not wont count for much if he installed the internals himself.

Ideally i want to know if genuine or not without the hassle of fitting first too

This any use? Should be full size so might be annoying to view

APR pumps come complete, unlike other kits where you upgrade the internals yourself.

Do you have a link to the original ebay page?

I got a std fuel pump in my hand right now, and have been comparing with pics of your pump and pics of APR pumps on t'interweb hoping there would be an obvious difference on the shaft/spring/plunger but unfortunately theres nothing that jumps out at me

just had another look and noticed in all the images of the APR pumps I looked at the pump shaft is black, which is APR's diamond like coating apparantly , where as the picture shown and the std pump in front of me has a silver shaft, not sure this could be considered conclusive, just something I noticed

how much did you pay for it. Has he any receipts or info of who he bought it from? If he got it from a reputable tuner or site, or had it fitted by a reputable tuner such as AMD etc they could always confirm!

Apr don't sell internals? Or upgrade pumps? I thought they only sold the entire unit??

Apr will upgrade your own pump for you.

They do a trade in service i believe, you can buy outright, or trade in for a upgrade.  :happy2:

It's not a trade in.

They take your pump from you, inspect it, completely strip it down and then rebuild it using their uprated internals.

A second option is to send your existing HPFP to APR. Your pump will be tested, cleaned, rebuilt, tested again, broken in, serialized, and shipped back to you

See here

 APR Pump  (http://www.goapr.com/products/fsi_fuel_pump.html)

as TC says 2 options

brand new pump with APR internals

or exchange service for a complete rebuilt pump using APR internals

as far as I'm aware its not your pump but a previously exchanged item

is the central shaft fixed in place with 2 collets on the end?

If you read the link I posted APR will rebuild YOUR pump with the uprated internals

yes but is that for the American domestic market, seems a long way to send a fuel pump for rebuild????

iirc UK pumps get sent to APR Europe who do the same thing.

I could be wrong though and they may send them back to the US.

I bought two APR ones in the US last year on holiday.  I shipped them the ones to be upgraded before we went and had them shipped to the hotel whilst I was there.

If you only paid just over £100 for that pump anyway then it might be worth keeping as an upgradable unit.

thing is though it is quite easy to replace your fuel pump with an APR one, transfer the stickers and sell of the normal HPF as an APR upgrade

I've just looked at my Pump in the garage and it too has black internals.

If I remember correctly the collet that retains the spring is different.

Was just going to say i'm pretty sure all the APR Pumps have black Pistons due to the Diamond Coating they put on them.

If you look at the Link i posted earlier in the Thread it shows the pump stripped down highlighting what is replaced. That shows a Black Piston.

I would be dubious as to why it has a Silver Piston. It may well be upgraded (using Autotech Internals for example) but i would be inclined to say that isn't an APR one.
