Title: xenon conversion
Post by: Gtiain on July 25, 2010, 07:37:03 pm
I want to convert my headlights to xenons and found these on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280526135576&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Is this all I need or would I need to purchase anything else and if so what?

Thanks

Are these not the greatest then?! Or is it xenons your against? Because everyone I speak to says they are so much better than normal halogens? What's say you?

from my experience the kits you buy always end up with you blinding other drivers, compared to a OEM conversion that have auto levelling...

just my opinion

They do how ever improve your view! so as cars swerve towards the light you can see them and avoid them!

HID kits are essentially illegal. Even the HIDS4U website states:

Quote
In the UK, fitting an aftermarket HID kit is not technically road legal as you are replacing a halogen bulb with an HID bulb, because of this the HID bulb cannot be E marked, which is a requirement for it to be road legal. Therefore our HID kits are sold for off-road use only.

Ok thanks guys, I didn't know that. So where can I get one with auto leveling? Thanks.

What you need to do is buy the genuine Golf xenons. They go on ebay from £300 to £500 pounds. The auto levelling kit is around £2-300 from Kufatec and then you'll need the headlight washers which aren't too difficult. Some members on here just buy the OEM xenons and have them aimed low so just the cost of the headlights themselves.

If you just want the light to be a bit brighter get some uprated bulbs such as Osram night beakers or Philips Xtreme. Do not get the cheap xenon lookalike bulbs or the chavtastic HID kits. You'll look like an idiot and people will hate you just from the look of your car.

Ok I'll have a look on eBay again. Thankyou very much for your help. How can I check that they are genuine vw ones? Sorry for the silly questions, never done this! Ta

When changing to xenons do you need to change the power going to the lights? ie a transformer or converter? Or is it just a simple plug in to the headlights? Cheers!

Hi,

You just need to purchase the kufatec adapters then it's simply plug n play off your existing headlight loom.

There about £45.00 delivered.

Cheers

I bought a set of these.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HELLA-GOLF-5-V-MK5-HEADLIGHTS-SET-XENON-LOOK-R32-RHD-/200579708297?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2eb37b7589#ht_1433wt_1177

They look exactly like OEM lights (hella supplied VW) but use halogen bulbs. They are legal, pass an MOT and not as expensive as OEM xenons. This tread tells you alot.
