How do you remove the phone cradle from the dashboard?
Will it leave a hole in the dash?
Is it worth anything on fleabay?

This is from inside the glovebox.

I was wondering the same thing, got an iphone 3gs, so cant buy a cradle, and already bought the bluetooth toch thing, that didnt work either.
Seems like its a new glovebox, about £50 off ebay!
-
Assuming i understand what you mean and you want to be able to remove that phone kit and not have a hole left behind in the dash then you can buy the part of the dash thats had the hole put in to replace that piece so its tidy - which is what i've done, i just havent fit it yet. Cost me about £26 thru my mate at TPS.
Its a huge piece of the dash you get tho, i'll find a pic and part number later if you like

That's right, i just want to get rid of it with no sign that it was fitted,
I still need to know how to remove the thing.
If you could get that part number i'd be grateful.
-
No worries, i'll post it up when i get home just before 6.
As for fitting it - it looks like it might be fun which is why its still sat in my 2nd bedroom waiting to go on the car lol

That whole lower section from just above the ali stip is the glovebox housing and is actually pretty easy to pull out. :chicken:
-
You say "pull out" is it not screwed in then?
-
Yes its screwed in - the ally dash trim looks like it clips on to that lower piece and you'd need to remove the glovebox itself first as it fixes to it
-
This is all I was able to find in Elsawin. Not sure if it helps any ?

You need to change the full glovebox has that is what the phone holder is sitting on, once you take the holder off you will be left with 4 holes.
If you get one of these dent master type of blokes they maybe able to make it look good, but seen has a second hand fleebay glovebox will be less than one of the dent guys you may aswell just buy a glovebox and replace it.

Thanks for the diagrams Norbreck21a
mortygttdi, Would the replacement piece of trim not be cheaper to buy?
-
Yes sorry there are 7 screws holding it in, see about half way through this guide for removing it. It looks daunting but its actually pretty straightforward.

There is much more in this guide than what you need ...

Interesting thread :happy2:
I've got the same issue/problem and want rid of mine as well.

I've removed this from my car.
As stated previously, you will need a new glovebox. It is also quite easy to change.
-
Part number for what you need should be 1K2 857 114 C 71N
As i say, its basically the bottom half of the passenger side dash - the part cost me £27
-
That's great ant thanks, cheaper than a glovebox.

Hi - I don't suppose you could post up a photo of the part please? I'm having problems visualising what part it is as the area under the metallic strips just looks like the glovebox section/component (one piece).
Very many thanks :happy2:
Richard.

Here you go....

Thank you (given) ! :happy2:
I didn't realise you could get so much for only £27 from VW! Basically it's the whole glove-box surround.
-
Wow :surprised: When you said it's a "big piece of plastic" you wern't joking.
Have you fitted it yet?
What's the procedure?

I know, I have been surprised by bits in the past, I got a whole top cover for the steering wheel top for about £6 iirc, even with the fake leather bit :surprised:
-
ive not fit it yet, i had to get it out the box to take that pic lol
I need to do it at some point tho as i've got a rattle over that side somewhere too that i wanna stop before i go mad!
-
I'm still not sure how the actual phone cradle is removed,
Where is it screwed to? anyone....
-
I suspect that the screws / bolts and washers are behind the dash and go in to the unit itself.
When removed it will leave 3 holes i think, 2 for the fixings, 1 for the wiring
-
Ah, Ok, i'm gonna have to do this soon, i'm sick looking at the hideous phone holder.

You and me both lol, its been sat there looking at me since i got the car and the dash piece has been staring at me indoors for almost as long lol
-
As others have said, its a very easy job... You just need a T20 screwdriver. There is a how to available here:
http://golfmk5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96856
If you can get the part from VW for £25, I'd bite their hands off!!

Thanks for finding that aidman,
Now i'm crapping myself :scared: as anything i touch i destroy, But i'll give it a go :happy2:

:signLOL: When i had my MK 4 GTI i bought loads of stuff for it from the dealers that just sat there for years gathering dust, Like Bora vents, and small wing mirrors, leather armrest, R32 steering wheel etc etc etc.
I'm determined not to let that happen this time round.
By the way i noticed from your sig you have had Revo DSG remap done, How did it change the car, and do you recommend it?

As long as you have the right tools, you can't go wrong :D

Mmmmm still think a second hand complete glovebox if in good condition will be a far easier way to do the job??
7 screws and 4 plugs and the a/c hose swap over and jobs a good un. My glove box has been out more times than i care to remember.
Cheers
