Title: Superchips told me that my car had already been mapped
Post by: stu_no_1 on July 27, 2010, 08:48:00 pm
i uploaded my original map to superchips and the emailed me back saying

Hi

The file you have uploaded from your Gti is already modified by another tuner and by the looks of things heavily modified for a non standard car too!  To proceed we would need to have the ECU returned to factory VW original.

Any questions let me know.

how do i know who remapped the car and how will i know if its safe the car is completely standard as far as i know
anybody help me out ?

Has anyone around you got access to a Revo Select Plus Switch? If so they could see if you currently have a revo map on. You need to be careful it sounds as though it may have had a high level map and then mods to support he map may have come off of the car. Worth investigating.

i dont know anyone around me with a gti i didnt even think it was that fast my dad had a gti before and he drove it said it felt slower than his but i dont want to get the map put to standard then get superchips map and find it slower than it is now but if its going to damage the engine i would be better to

I would be getting it flashed back to standard so you know exactly where you are with the car and have a known baseline. It may be running a map that is set for components that are not currently on the car!

it could possibly be revo as there is a dealer that sells revo not far from the garage i bought the car from but that is just a total guess

As Dom says, it may already have Stage 2 or more software already on it. But it may have been switched back to standard with a switch. Hence it doesn't feel mapped. But you would need to find out which map is on it before switching it back on without the supporting hardware (TBE, Fuel Pump etc)..
First thing would be to try a Revo Select switch and see if it has Revo software, if so then ask them what Stage?
Where are you based pal?

Or you could pay your local REVO dealer a visit and he may be able to tell you.

Or correct me if I am wrong REVO folk but if you rang them with your VIN number they should be able to confirm from that.

would it have to be the revo dealer that done it or would it be on their systems if it had been done anywhere in the uk

If it is a REVO map then REVO HQ should know.

Best thing to do mate is ring Revo on 01327 301901 and ask for Kev or Carl. They'll be able to help you out if it is Revo software on your car..  :happy2:

I doubt it would be REVO TBH.

REVO maps are heavily encrypted (as are all the other maps from big tuners).  This is to prevent smaller companies from being able to read their code and copy it.

The fact that SC were able to read the code in this situation suggest to me that it was not encrypted and therefore not REVO/APR/GIAC etc.

people who know what they are doing can easily copy a revo map

the car may have a map on but may be down on power due to a bust DV  id have thought a stage 2 map on a standard car would still be alot quicker than standard.

Not as easy as you would think. Anyone CAN copy a revo map out of an ECU but actually decoding the software and all of the scrambled 'ghost' maps that REVO install is almost impossible.

I know, I have read REVO software using BDM and tried to decipher it, I failed. I have 10+ years experience in vehice software and engine managment programming, I am also a REVO dealer.

i got a reply back from the guy at superchips i asked if they could tell me who it was that mapped the car i got this back

I can’t I’m afraid as there are no tags in the file to tell me.  Yes I would say it is asking for far too much boost which it can never achieve so would suggest taking the car to VW to have them re-flash the car to factory original.

i have phoned vw in gorgie edinburgh and they say they wont touch the car as its been modified is this right or are they just being awkward ?

Have you thought about contacting the previous owner?

Just book it in for a diagnostic check at the dealers and a reflash, you dont need to tell them the map problems. think it is about 70 squid.

problem solved once i told superchips i was going to sell the bluefin on if i couldnt get the map on they said they could help me and they sent me a standard map then sent me the superchips map the car is not as torquey as it was before but that was obviously down to the car putting out too much boost so at least now i know whats on the car
