Title: Miglior Detailing Ltd: Matt Black Beast - Greeners aka Nathan's Car!
Post by: JPC on July 29, 2010, 06:13:56 pm

Hi guys, thanks for checking out another write up of mine.

This time, we have another Golf Edition 30, but this one is rather a special one! Its our very own "greener's" car aka Nathan. It has a Matt black vinyl wrap and is a true show car. It only comes out for shows and the odd trip to the Nurburgring. Other than that, it’s garaged. It is Naths pride and joy.
Nath had the car wrapped matt black with the idea it would be easier to maintain than the original paint work. That worked out a little different in reality. With a matt finish, it picked up marks very easily. Finger prints, water marks and light scuffs really took away from the finish. It holds water like a sponge too and dries with nasty marks.
So, Nath brought the car us to be protected or waxes. Now, it’s a bit of a tricky one, waxing a car without making it shiny. So, we used Swissvax Opaque wax that has been specifically developed to not change the appearance in matt paintwork.

Here is the car on arrival.

Straight on with a full wash procedure. All arches, wheels, tyres, bodywork, door shuts, grills cleaned in the usual manner.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F2.jpg&hash=32bb25d8f3ae92fc3fceb10779ff7f87a91f5609)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F3.jpg&hash=e722c59f4b8ef8054892a17c928019e6eb87ed94)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F4.jpg&hash=782ffcbe66f9868392a2e8e1080888b09a1a249b)

The car was then brought into the unit.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F5.jpg&hash=49af4c2de6cbfe25365f0a82828e02b00e67f71a)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F6.jpg&hash=5bc87b3992aabda39c1dbb1a858a9ab2a8d0efb7)

The car was full of oily marks and splashes

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F8.jpg&hash=0fe7f985a98cc787d0d285aef89fa72fca202268)

The vinyl was then cleaned with Swissvax Pre-Cleaner Opaque.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F9.jpg&hash=85a8045d1b4fff2851f9a17fe1ccbc43bd4ccafb)

And wiped

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F10.jpg&hash=7aab3ac1d3c63c281314cc94610cb88bfea9e378)

This helped a lot to get rid of the oily marks on the car that were so easily picked up. Any traces of tyre shine on the bodywork were easily taken care of with the pre-cleaner.

After the Pre-cleaner was used, we removed the red vinyl on the front splitter on request of Nath.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F11.jpg&hash=1e4cbe748e3efa3e5c2f7b7c625c18ece3727f59)

Now it’s time for some wax.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F7.jpg&hash=9975e03ff16e77fd9acdf769107ea44ea5f032f9)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F12.jpg&hash=1d1a9c6c7790f8901e75ad97a1c20ae844f83cce)

Here you can see a waxed area before buffing off.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F13.jpg&hash=0ee3569fa63bd358f0aed88f5b81607ebacc0edf)

Don’t worry, that will calm down a lot after buffing. After the wax cured and the residue was removed, I went around the whole car again 3 hours later which smoothed out the finish again.

Test section of wax curing

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F14.jpg&hash=a5b999af5b705dd9649ae39a7fd2a26e99da0be5)

I decided to do a 50/50 on the bonnet

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F16.jpg&hash=688135358dcc5a58e9ebb271428f29bf137c93f3)

Wax curing

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F17.jpg&hash=a6e2690c6753c19a1b362830a2723db63cb4296a)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F18.jpg&hash=73f4a6491c1a381b874c0805f87ebd9db28556fc)

When buffed off, the wax left a very subtle change in depth in the film. Bear in mind, this was before the 3 hour period where I went around the whole car again buffing. Nath loved the subtle added depth in the vinyl.

Below is another shot of how the wax levelled out the film, making a much more uniform finish. Something which is hard to achieve on a matt surface. Underneath the bump strip has yet to be treated.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F20.jpg&hash=b27d079f1b212fbd5793ad59fbd52e4f3f0e9db8)

Another huge advantage of protecting a matt finish like this is it will be far more capable of repelling water. Matt finishes normally cling onto a silly amount of water. Below is a small splash on the paint.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F34.jpg&hash=626854416f4601bfe2d41de6584c12dbcc330589)

This will stay like that for about 15 minutes until it develops to a dry stain. Not just a water mark, it really almost stains the finish!

Once the surface is treated, it repels water like it should do!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F35.jpg&hash=02f3839a928ca79a007771b17fff4cc770e6b403)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F524%2Fresize%2F36.jpg&hash=fe993c84fddd71d1a47d865c49364d3109affdd3)

Beading and a Matt finish are not something you'd normally see in the same sentence!

Once the whole car was waxed, which took a LONG time due to the matt finish; I completed all the finishing items. The exhaust was cleaned with Swissvax metal polish. The wheels were waxed with Swissvax autobahn after being polished with Cleaner fluid. Tyres dressed with Pneu. Arches dress with 303. Any shiny areas (a few are still there!) were waxed with Best of Show.

Total work time: 9 Hours! It sounds a lot, but the waxing stage in a finish like this is unreal, if you are going to do a proper job!

Thanks for reading guys!

Thanks again Jay, fantastic job that has made the investment in the vinyl worth while as you know I wasn't 100% happy with it!  :congrats:

And for anyone else wondering whether to take the car to Jay or not I can wholeheartedly recommend his work 100%! He is so fastidious and in some ways very methodical in the way he works which is very admiral! Oh and he also must have lost half a stone applying this wax!

Thanks Jay!  :drinking:

Great write up Jay. The car looks fantastic. Amazing the amount of detail going to keep a car not looking shiny! Car looks amazing Nathan!

Shame you are up north Jay, otherwise I would be paying you a visit!

glad you liked it nath!

Its all still a bit experimental this waxing a matt car but its well worth it! hopefully this will go to prove you can protect a matt finish without making it shiny. The level of water repellency was incredible, even for me who sees it every day. I think due to the increased surface area of the finish (due to the rough surface) its more like a lotus leaf now!

For anyone who is interested, the surface of a lotus leaf is incredibly rough microscopically. Meaning water hardly touches the leaf, it just rolls off!

I saw Nathans car on Satdee and I have to say compared to Inters it looked a whole lot better.
I guess some will call this a marmite mod, not my cup of tea personally but I can appreciate it and the work involved.  :happy2:

is the wrap a long term thing? seen a blue r32 that had been fully wrapped to look white then they took it off with some of the paint, this was an online post so dont know if the owner used the proper method in removing it.
Jay - so you gave his car a hand job

Its hard to tell the difference from the pics with mat, but i am sure it looks great. keep it looking spanking so i can have a proper blimp at Tatton.  :happy2:

And in true Robin stylee i also think it looks a lot more classy with the black splitter.  :happy2:

Fantastic job  :happy2:

I'm sure I read in either Evo or Auto Express recently whereby you could spec a certain BMW model in matt black paint but BMW made it very clear that it must never be waxed. Clearly BMW are not aware of Swissvax Opaque wax!

The matt finish is really growing on me.  - kind of can't stop starring at it! I don't think I could be brave enough to do it to my own car but really appreciate seeing it on others. I'm sure I saw what looked like a R32 (or R32 lookalike) a couple of weeks ago on the M3 in what I assume was a matt black wrap. Very eye catching on the road  :happy2:

Awesome work Jay, and if you do a Southern tour then put me down for a day!  Maybe you should kit out a bit of your workshop with a PS3 xbox skyplus and big TV then all us southerners can come up for the day and hang out while you get to work on the car!  Could also be a detailing course type thing so that we can learn at the same time!

Awesome work!

Your attention to detail, product knowledge as well as your final results are inspiring.

Not sure how some cannot see a difference in the Matte? Its huge. And beading is another thing.

JPC - Would you mind dropping me a PM with the price of that wax please? Just to compare.

Thanks!

Mike

thanks for the comments mike.

Its £120 for a tub i think.

Thats 200ml.

With a normal car (painted surface) i would expect to use a small fraction of that, but with the matt, it think you would use about 30ml on each coat!

Be interested to see who long it lasts, and how long you'd need to recoat it, as with putting wax on vinyl, will it go pastie in colour after the suns been on it?.

As this is a new experiment as it were. Fingers crossed for a long lasting result.

Well, i say its experimental, to the extent that not many have used this on a full car yet in this country.

The wax is far from from a rough product in early development. Its been manufactured for Lamborghini for their matt paint on the LP 670 - SV. Swissvax dont make products to compete with another product, they normally only release a product if a manufacturer approaches them with a problem. They are in and out of rolls royce a lot on the production lines for example to help with their paint finishes.

By no means is this something thats in its infancy. Also, with the larger surface area being matt, i would expect this to last a bit longer than wax on a smooth painted surface.

Greeners Kudos on the car,

This is the whole reason i bought myself a Golf again after seeing your pictures on the internet, Didnt know this was yours. I am in love with this car and was basing my buy on this which i feel slightly daft doing so now.Il have to alter some how. But i love the Matt Black effect just looks amazing. I know its a little on now. But how did the Wrap/Wax hold up?

2nd Kudos to Miglior too unbelivable the amount of work and attention to detail you put into it. Id make the journey from bristol in a flash once mines done to get the finish you guys provided.

I love the look of this car, great finish and the matt wax could give a few more people the push over to matt finish cars!

Wow thread revival!  Thanks Benni!  :happy2:

My only advice to anyone thinking of having a Matte finish wrap is................

DO NOT DO IT!!!

Yes it looks great, but if you want to use the car out on the open roads it will drive you mad!! And don't even get me started about parking the car up at a show!!  :fighting:

PS, the wax itself is awesome stuff and it carried on beading right up to the point I stripped the wrap off to sell the car. In fact we used the same wax recently on a Shelby GT500 and its doing wonders on that too!

Bringing back from the dead.

No problem was chatting to someone about wanting Matt Black on mine and they pointed me towards you. So after trawling through old threads i found it  :pomppomp:

Looks awsome, i dont think you telling me not to do it can put me off although this is my "day" car.

Defiantly 2 minds now tho................
