Hi I have just bought an ed30 with an rns 510. I absolutely love the hard drive and sd card reader and the sat nav is fantastic too.
I want to get my gooogle android powered HTC desire to work with the car as a carphone. I had assumed that it was a simple matter of pairing them via bluetooth but it seems not. The instructions are clear as mud and seem to suggest I need to buy some sort of cradle or "premium" mobile phone provision.
I don't want "premium" phone provision, I want "bog standard" mobile phone provision where you leave the phone in your pocket and it all works via bluetooth. Can anyone shed any light for me?
PS, less than 24 hours in and I am loving the car. DSG takes a bit of getting used to as it is almost too smooth but it makes it very easy to drive especially coming from an S2000 which need a lot of comitment to drive quickly.
-
Do you have a bluetooth module attached to the RNS? or does the phone button on the unit just mute the volume?
-
Also looking for how I would do this.........
-
As Rich says you need a Bluetooth Interface. You may have one, and the best way to check is to scan for BT devices in the car using your handset.
If you don't have one and would like one it can be retrofitted.
SteveP, Darren (mortygttdi), or myself as well as others can help/supply the parts you need.
-
Sorry to cut in, but how much (and easy) would it be to add the bluetooth module to my car to work with an Iphone 3gs (firmware 4.01) ?
The RNS-510 is a B version and running the 1100 firmware. I do have the highline dash as well ?
-
The 729B is the unit normally used with the Red Highline however this doesn't seem to work too well with the IOS4 software so I'd suggest a 729D/E unit which will work nicely with your RNS510.
The install isn't too hard and I guess you've already had the dash out for the RNS install so you know how to do that.

Stu does the 729D/E unit work with the red highline?
scott :happy2:
-
No it doesn't Scott.
I think now your in the realms of making the best of it in terms of wanting to use IOS4. If you want IOS4 and have an RNS510 then the 729D/E is ideal. If you don't need to worry about IOS4, want to use Highline and have or can find a 729B then that's ideal.
-
But does turning on Bap comms to get the 729D/E to work on the RNS screen not stop the RNS from appearing in the highline Red dot ?
-
Never thought about that to be honest Steve, not something I've ever considered.
Enabling the BAP protocol on the RNS is not a function of the phone it's caused by the newer firmware. With the old firmware they worked without BAP enabled.
-
I only thought about it last weekend when fitting my old 729E to a Mk5 but as he has midline it wasn't an issue. I would like to try the 7P6 kit in a mk5 as that would be a great solution :happy2:

I'm hoping to get together with Hedge/Saint Steve sometime soon to give that a go. :happy2:

Guys i just want a kit that will work with the highline the way it used to before iso 4.0/4.0.1
surely there has to be a kit from vw that will work, how about the fiscon units do they suffer from this?

It's possible the 7P6 will but I've certainly not tried it yet. If it doesn't then I don't know of a VAG kit that will Scott. Other than that revert your iPhone to 3. whatever software.

Yup, I haven't got highline. Yet.

But the interface works beautifully. And my 3GS on OS 4.01 is faultless on this setup. Scott, this is the setup you need. Trust me when I say you won't miss the highline interface. It's all on the touchscreen.
-
^^^ for Scott as he has highline, would potentially lose the RNS audio and nav features from the highline to get the d/e bluetooth working on the touchscreen.
-
D'oh. Hadn't thought of that.

The phone button just seems to pause the stereo and scanning for BT devices revels none.
What would I need to buy and what would it cost to add BT phone compatibility?
-
Either something like the OEM VW/Skoda 729 or a fiscon Bluetooth kit, both around around the £350 mark.
I personally prefer the OEM and if you don't have the highline cluster display then these can be had slightly cheaper too.
-
Thanks Steve,
Is the highline cluster the info on your dash about navigation etc...?
If so then I do have that.
I don't care if the highline works with the phone but would like to retain its other features if possible.
Any suggestions where I could get it?
Would something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-BLUETOOTH-iPHONE-PREMIUM-NOT-FISCON-1Z0035729B-/170462597451 on e bay do the trick?
-
Yep that's the one, as far as I am aware that will work fine with google phones but has some issues with iPhones running IOS4.
-
Cool, thanks. what does: "VAG / VAS Coding is needed to operate this bluetooth kit in your car !!!"
mean?
Am I likley to have to upgrade firmware on the head unit or should it really be plug and play?
-
You need to enable the phone kit on the cars can gateway, a 30 second job.
Otherwise they are plug and play.
Where are you located as there are plenty of people on here with VCDS who will be able to help.
-
I am in North London in Hendon/Wembley.
I will have a go myself and if I get stuck I will shout for help!
Does that look like a decent price for the unit or are there any UK based companies that sell them that people on here recommend?
Thanks for all of your help.
Alex
-
I haven't found anyone cheaper for the 729b kit.
-
cool, I have bought it so I will let you know how it goes :)
Thanks for all of your help :happy2:

Hi, Thanks for the info, what are these for? Mounting the unit behind the dash I assume?
The covering thing seems to indicate that there is something visible, I was hoping to just leave the phone in my pocket, is that not possible?
-
Mounting under the drivers seat :happy2:

Mounting under the drivers seat :happy2:
I've got other stuff under my drivers seat so BT won't fit there, but I don't know what it is! It looks OEM though. We (my mate did it with me watching) put my BT unit behind the head unit, works fine.
Incidentally, regarding the IOS4 issue, 'ang on as I think things may be happening at Apple. :jumping:
Yesterday Apple didn't acknowledge this problem, said it was down to the car makers to keep up with the latest tech, and that I should get my BT upgraded, stupid cow.
Today, I was told that they are working on a fix!!
Hassle them at Apple Support, (a 0800 number) the more of us that do - the quicker things will happen. :drinking:

The details on my website for the Octavia install are quite similar to the Golf, the under seat mounting is the same.

I would like to try the 7P6 kit in a mk5 as that would be a great solution :happy2:
-
So when is Mr F going to service you with the required module then Ian
-
The deed is done. :happy2:
Sadly doesn't support the red DiS and VCDS doesn't support it yet.
-
That's a shame about the red dis :sad1:
Did you enable bap and if so did this stop the normal RNS stuff from showing?
-
Bap was left enabled for now but as we didn't have a label file for vcds we're a bit blind. I'll give seb a shout at RT and see what they know.
-
The label file would be very handy as mine is in US English so would be nice to get that sorted :happy2:
-
If i get anything I'll let you know.
I was under the impression you could change voice via the highline if you are white dash??
-
I was just going to say the 7P6-C unit does not do Red dot display, it actually locks it up it got stuck in the navigation until I changed back to my prem module.
I thought VW had actually got something right for once but no they just made it worse for us guys who have the older VW's

Sadly doesn't support the red DiS and VCDS doesn't support it yet.
The A2DP stuff works but only seems to come out the right side speakers.
Not fussed really as its a bit of a gimmick but still a nice to have. Maybe coding will help.
-
^^^ That will be the loom, it will need the following Pin connecting that aren't normally present :happy2:
Bluetooth module Pin 5 - RNS Green Connector Pin 5
Bluetooth module Pin 4 - RNS Green Connector Pin 11
-
Bummer :sad1:
-
It's only two repair wires and a bit of two core shielded cable :happy2:
The repair wires you need are: -
1 x 000 979 009
1 x 000 979 010
-
Ahh of course, the BT device is wired for one side only isn't it. On the Green plug, Yellow & Blue wires IIRC.
-
Yes that's correct, even the factory loom for the premium rSap kit on the Mk6 is the same and needs the extra wires running in :happy2:
-
So having updated the firmware it is now time to get my bluetooth moodule fitted.
I have done this kind of work a few times on previous cars but this looks a bit more involved. I would have a go at it myself but I am worried I will bugger something up.
Can anyone recommend someone reliable to fit it in or around north London?
-
I am in west London during the week so can help if you want :happy2:
-
I heartily endorse SteveP as a most excellent fitter :happy2:
-
oops,
Work distracted me from important things like bluetooth!
Thanks for the offer Steve I will PM you :happy2:
-
Wow, time flies and my bluetooth box is still sat under my desk at work!
I have just gone to order the parts but Citygate in Colindale want me to go there and order them in person and then go back to collect them :(
Anyone know if there is somwhere I can order them on line or ver the phone and have them delivered?
Thanks :)
-
In my experience Hayselden VW Barnsley parts dept are very helpful, and have no problems shipping out parts. They even have an eBay store.
However most parts departments have a policy of no return or refund on electrical items ordered.
-
That's not quite everything you need.
It's worth ordering these to -
1Z0 971 813 62U - Covering Black or 1Z0 971 813 3AU Covering Ivory

The bracket is 1Z0 035 185 :happy2:
I have called for these parts and they have told me that they are all skoda parts would that be correct? Should I be calling a skoda dealer to order thaem and will they definitely fit my Golf?
Thanks :)
-
They will fit, and VW part departments will be able to order them even though they are Skoda, they are clearly being useless! But wont hurt to order them from a Skoda dealer especially if they are more helpful!
-
my god, finally found someone who would take my money over the phone: http://www.skoda.co.uk/retailers/willis_motor_company/home1.aspx
Very helpful guy called Geoff in their parts department. So helpful my next car may be a Skoda!
The correct part number for the bracket was: 1Z0 035 815
Thanks all :)

So I have bought some trim removal tools and decied to give this a go myself. I have managed to get the stereo out but now for the under steering wheel dash trim  I can't see how to do it at all.
It appears to be two pieces. I have removed the fuse panel but nothing there
and I found one torx under the steering wheel and another in the mini glove box by your right knee. Nothing wants to budge though :(
Can anyone help?
-
Where you took the cubby out there is at least one in the upper edge of that. There is also one under the trim which runs under the dash insert. Have you got the light switch out?
-
Does the section of trim on the right hand side of the steering wheel come out before the bit on the left?
The light switch is still in ATM, does that come out first?
-
There is a screw for the trim behind the light switch. Turn the switch to 0 push inwards and turn to release the switch.
-
My God, longest install ever!
I have now got round to running the wiring to the unit and it seems to work fine. I get a green screen with my phone book etc...
The star and phone button on the steering wheel still don't do anything though. It is not a big deal as I only use about five numbers and so speedials are not a problem but should the unit do voice dialing?
-
It might need coding.
