Title: My poor rear hatch!
Post by: Hurdy on January 29, 2009, 05:09:14 pm
Bloody carbon fibre badge!!!!!!

I bought the rear badge and didn't send in my core. I said my badge was an Edition 30 one and gave the part number for the badge. When the badge arrived, complete with a new latch mechanism....guess what? It was the wrong badge design!!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhurdy_album%2FBoot_latch_replacement%2FBootlatchreplacement012a.jpg&hash=c06eaa6dad3246cca61bdf5aa8f13594d3c064e4)

This now meant I had to take off the existing latch and replace with the new one. So my car looked like this shortly after.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhurdy_album%2FBoot_latch_replacement%2FBootlatchreplacement002a.jpg&hash=16e86bf2b3e0da45bc99e88bd07b9fec1b78f037)

and now looks like this

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhurdy_album%2FBoot_latch_replacement%2FBootlatchreplacement017a.jpg&hash=e8f27d92d9a5758fc65e8da68f7ccd474e553ad8)

I'm going to spray the latch, so it isn't in yet and the car is garaged at the moment

Then again at least it'll stay clean for a while

Anyone want some closer pics of bits, pipe up and I'll oblige whilst the back cover is off

You can do me a favour, have a look and see if any of the connections in the washer hose are those same crappy push fittings that bust on the MKIV?

It's a sodding pain. You even have to unscre the wiper pump and motor to get at one of the torq screws, which in turn means taking the cap off the exterior wiper part. At this rate I may as well get a bung and simply do the rear wiper delete at the same time :signLOL:

Cheers, good to hear I'm not getting woken by the alarm again at some point then when it decides to dump all over the lock.

Bung FTW!! - Rainx, job done.

I nearly got that far trying to fit my rear one as the bugger didn't want to go back on!  :surprised:

For future reference, the rear cover just pulls away from the tailgate doesn't it John?

There are two screws that sit inside the handhold sections of the hatch trim that need to be removed first. After that it is a matter of gently but firmly tugging the trim off. :happy2:

Managed to get it safely back on again and checked that it works okay. Although the pic looks like the finished article (including the silver backing to the badge, which FTW :happy2:) I still haven't fitted the interior trim back on yet. :ashamed:

Oh and as an upshot of this I found a car wrapping company 5 minutes from my house who supplied the silver backing for the badge. It really does finish the CF off nicely. Plenty left over too :happy2:

The badge comes off quite easily. I found that a piece of stiff plastic egded under the lip of the badge and worked around the circumference, levering slightly as you go around, did the trick.  Once the badge is off you can read the VW part number on the back as all badges aren't the same :happy2:

If it's the rear  VW emblem you are on about then VW will not sell it seperately, you have to buy the complete opening handle that includes it...
