Title: Brushed Alloy Cigarette/Cubby Lid
Post by: hotrod30 on January 29, 2009, 08:43:51 pm
Longshot really guys,

As you may know early GTI’s had a matching alloy cigarette/cubby lid. On later cars they are plain black plastic. Does anyone know where the lids can be purchased... dealer, eBay? Do you know the model number and does it snap into position.

Any info gratefully received... Hotrod

Blue, when you say ‘the lot’ do you mean that VW made a full brushed ali console kit like the R32 but matching ours cars?

the brushed alu lid is harder to find. and i can confirm that Nath's and Markymark's are this type.

I bought this as a cheap alternative to see what it was like, and it has stayed perfectly flat and smooth. Not bad for a fiver.

Hi guys the part number for the lid only is 1K0857351D44U, I paid £25.96 all in from my dealers. The part is actually aluminised plastic, I thought it was the wrong one to start with but its not!  :happy2:

I don’t ever remember seeing it. The one thing I liked about the R32 was the full ali console & trim. Looked very integrated.

The GTi was only ever launched with the brushed aluminium lid and not the full surround like you see on the R32 or the Gunmetal type

I ordered mine from from my VW dealer with no issues it was £27.91 inc VAT

Here's the guide to changing the top: -

http://oempl.us/diy/article_info.php?articles_id=23&osCsid=9e361398f9d2f0e0f785efaa1b303a92

Hope it helps and they do look miles better than the black plastic!! :happy2:

Hi Top Cat,

Was it easy to apply... in situ or take out? Also is it high gloss or matt finish? Looks like a quick option that gets the desired effect.

I’m tempted, where did you buy mate?

Hot rod you just remove the lid give it a really good clean then just spend time locating properly you can use water with a touch of soap to move it about, as its hard to line up exactly. then just keep rubbing with a soft cloth until the bubbles dissipate.
I managed to do a decent job so it cant be that hard.  :rolleye:

You have to get a couple of small flat screwdrivers in from the side to "persuade" the rear tabs to let go (without busting them). Not a too bad a job, but a little fiddly. Look at the OEMpl.us guide, its the tabs shown on picture 2.3. I found it easier going at them from the side. :jumping:

Well worth it though, it certainly lifts the interior compared to the black plastic cover.  8)
