Date :- Wednesday 4th August 2010
Place :- RS Tuning Leeds
Time :- AM
Event :- Dyno Dynamics Rollers that accept nitrous power runs :jumping:
Time to see what the old gassed up girl does on one of these uber accurate rollers Eh!
Poll is up and running for power output - Last time I was there I did 339.8bhp
And what torque do you think I'll get as a side note?
-
I thought you already had about 380hp
So I put 410-414bhp and I reckon you will be around the 420-450 lbft mark with those recent timings you posted.
-
Well seeing as my car whoooped yours up the strip :star: i reckon mine is 270BHP so i would like an option in the voting for 230 - 250 BHP. (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDaft_stuff%2Frockyhorrorkissavatar.gif&hash=0b9714851f132bfc19d0545f3bac41d5906f63ad) :signLOL:

....JKM's rejection of nitrous cars on their D-D rollers is to do with health and safety and insurance AFAIK.
-
Let's hope you car doesn't end up like a certain Clio on those rollers...

I added my own option and vote

Oh, I also see the extra option

Yeah, When I spoke to RSTuning they were surprised at a dyno rejecting a nitrous'ed car.
-
i reckon a s390-399 on DD rollers, with 380Ibft torque.
-
more to the point hurdy, what do you predict, your the one who drives it??
-
more to the point hurdy, what do you predict, your the one who drives it??
around the 440-460bhp range. :popcornsoda:
-
i put 470-479bhp mate. whats the prize for being right
-

A jiffy bag of Exploded Piston?? :signLOL:
-
trust me guys this car is fast on the move above 30mph it just shifts :driver: defo way over 400bhp
-
1 in 6 think it is going to explode at the moment :sad1:
Ye of little faith :innocent:
-
if it does explode John, seems like a good excuse for bigger pistons.
-
Bagsey 1st dibs on making a coffee table out of it :happy2:
Seriously, i guessed 425-429bhp :happy2:
-
You gonna be using the 100shot nozzles?
Then I predict 450hp 445lb/ft Torque :P
Oh, and I'm 99.9% sure it will be fine on the rollers lol
-
405 - 409, 420lb.ft
I might come and watch this too :happy2:
-

Oh, and I'm 99.9% sure it will be fine on the rollers lol
Yeah, the car is now just about set-up and the 100shot nozzles are stopping in for the dyno.
Just looked and last time out on this dyno the torque was already 380lbft :scared:

Hmm, 380eh.
OK, 460lb/ft torque is now my revised torque figure, I'll stick with 450hp :innocent:
-
1 in 6 think it is going to explode at the moment :sad1:
Cars are far more likely to explode on the road than on a good dyno setup that appies the correct load and has good cooling.
I guess 420bhp
-
wheres the ran out of nitrous gas excuse ? :signLOL:
wheelspin on the rollers ?
430+ was my vote if all goes to plan :happy2:
-
Bagsy a rod as a paperweight.
-
Any news yet? I reckon 470bhp or there abouts
-

Ah bollix lol thought it was today!
-
Bagsy a rod as a paperweight.
And a piston as an ashtray :signLOL:
Only kidding Hurdy - just put you down for 450BHP and a visit to the dentist on the way back
Try hard but not too hard
-
what ever it makes its blooy fast :notworthy:..i reckon 460bhp
-
Well, been to Wizards of NOS again today for a little more setting up and info + refilled both bottles as they were running on vapours. What I didn't know was that the % calculation left in the bottles was based upon the original size nozzles I had in :ashamed: Now I know how to change the settings too
Tomorrow should prove very interesting indeedy.
-
Voted 425hp
Hope it goes better than that tho dude!
Good luck thast one hell of a car :driver:
-
The old signature picture had 384hp, so adding a 100hp shot... +/- a bit...
I guess 464bhp and 458lb/ft!!
:popcornsoda:
-
^^^ if its that high , i hope his Gearbox holds together :scared:
Admire you john for taking this on.Your in unchartered waters
I really hope it keeps itself together :happy2:
-
Me too. :happy2:
I didn't know until today, but the controller has 4 memory functions and each one can be set differently. So I've set the one I'm using tomorrow to be a little gentler on ramp up than on the road as a dyno can be quite harsh on the driveline under load. It will still ramp up to max power though :happy2:
-
bet you cant wait to see the results!! :signLOL:
-
right its 07:38. have you done it yet
-
good luck John :happy2: be fair to say we are all pretty excited on here :drinking:
-
Well what can I say.......RS Tuning must be busy and have knocked back my appointment to 2pm due to existing work already booked in. :sad1:
Looks like you'll have to wait a little longer guys and gals.
MatEd30 is popping over to watch the explosion dyno run :driver:
I may well do a run with and without nitrous if the engine stays in one piece time allows, to get a comparison of performance.
440+bhp on a Dyno Dynamics roller would be nice and that is what I'd be happy with..........and to be able to drive it home in one piece :signLOL:
-
i am sure it will be fine :scared: :signLOL: atleast i will be over incase u need a lift home :signLOL:

True, but there is always that small, nagging doubt at the back of your mind that says it could go pop :scared:

It's fast guys way over 400bhp :signLOL: will let John tell u when he ges in :congrats:
-
So he hasn't ended up looking like Niki Lauda then? Phew!
-
450-459 was my guess
-
I am gonna guess 432
-
What was the prize for closest guess, again...?
way over 400bhp
^^^ :stupid: :congrats: :pomppomp: :driver:

he's just letting the suspense build :signLOL:

Too late to vote, but i reckon 488bhp and 459lb/ft
-
It's fast guys way over 400bhp :signLOL: will let John tell u when he ges in :congrats:
:star:
Did he manage a "with and without" run Mat?
-

Yes rs tuning did before and after nos runs
-
Well, I'm home safe and sound.
Without nitrous the car did 340bhp and 381lbft. On nitrous it did 338.7bhp and 510lbft. That's right 510 lbft!!! :scared:
They had to strap it dowm much tighter than normal and said the power would read lower by around 10 bhp as a result. I'm very happy with the result but just gobsmacked at the torque output.
-

Is that figure right?
-
Hang on, youve lost 2bhp John??
Do you mean 438.7bhp with NOS

Lol.. As long as your happy mate thats what counts.. If those results are at all accurate though I would be getting rods in that motor ASAP!
-
At the wheels it did 340 and at the crank 438bhp or something like that
-
At the wheels it did 340 and at the crank 438bhp or something like that
So without NOS it made 340 wheel??.. Hmm
-
At the wheels it did 340 and at the crank 438bhp or something like that
Something wrong there then, wouldn,t you agree.
-
At the wheels it did 340 and at the crank 438bhp or something like that
....So were all the 'vote' ranges for at wheels or at crank?
-
Sorry that should be 438.7bhp and 510lbft :ashamed:
-
Woo so i was right :)
Along with 4 others lol
-
Sorry that should be 438.7bhp and 510lbft :ashamed:
You crazy man John!!. Thats defies Belief!!.
So whats next   :signLOL:
:notworthy:
-
Next is rods and uprated clutchpacks. :happy2:
-
rods soon asap Mr Hurditch :scared:
-
Little bit more than mine made on JKM's dyno today
-
Sorry that should be 438.7bhp and 510lbft :ashamed:
Can you post up a graph?! Awesome results.. Makes you wander what it would make with a proper turbo on there..

Here you go Jonny. :happy2:
Pic of how they had to strap it down. They said strapping down this way loses 2-3% as it pulls the wheels so hard down into the rollers :sad1:

Lovely flat power from 5k.. That torque curve looks savage though! Not surprised your struggling for traction lol.. Looks good mate! :)
-
holy bent piston rods batman :surprised: :surprised: :surprised: :surprised: :surprised: :surprised:
you seriously need rods before you start running at the pod.
Also is it fair to say nobles dyno reads high becasue you've lost the best part of 50Hp without nitrous compared to the previous 380hp.
i bet traction is nuts, imagine this on an S3 with the ability to put that power down :scared:
-
Did I read that right?
510lb/ft :surprised: :surprised: :surprised:
Me thinks I might get some nitro for the blue bullet.
In fact can you nitro a diseasel?
-

Yep Jason had it on his Fabia
Nice results John :happy2: Just as I guessed

Yep. :scared:
So I'd probably be around 480-500bhp on Nobles dyno :surprised:
-
id always quote the lower figure anyway, that way it p!sses people off more when you annihalate them lol.
when i was running the shark stage 3 i only used to tell people it was about 260. which especially annoyed the guy in work with a focus RS or couldnt properly lose me on the straights
-
ermmmm...why did they stop at 6.2k rpm?
you've got the DSG remap. I would have thought they'd rev it up to 7k rpm!
-

Maybe they didn't want the engine to go boom...
-

It is the revs which will destroy the engine. I cut out the nitrous at 6300rpm to ensure that if they did rev it too much there would be no damage :happy2:
-
very good john, im impressed with the prep you've done for this big day.
now get some fancy springs/lifters/rods/pistons into that motor and crack the big 500.
-
Awesome results John (as I said earlier). Bit suprised by the 339bhp without NOS though. (makes my 336 I got the other week there look better though  )..
Must of been RR day today or something. As that's me, you and Theo who all went on DD rollers in different places, on the same day
-
dont forget Ben they had this car strapped down tight so hence down on power a little
-
dont forget Ben they had this car strapped down tight so hence down on power a little
Yeah, fair enough
-
I think John has to knock his settings back to get the NOS working spot on, so surely his non NOS figures won't be so great??????
-
that torque figure is mad!!! when it was on 2 young lads came over and said to me, "you better move, someone said that car might go pop" :signLOL: fair play to ye John :happy2:
-
Good result m8 bet your well pleased with that. :happy2:
yeah my mate was there in his black megane sport 225 with red mirrors n he was telling me bout that lol.
-
I'm glad the 20.3% of non-believers were wrong :rolleye: :signLOL:
-
How much was the kit Hurdy & where did you get it?
That has surely got to be the best bang for buck after stage 1 map.
-

I wasn't to far out bud.. Can't wait to hopefully see it run on Friday.. :jumping:

Friday????

fantastic John :congrats:
with 500lbs/ft at 3500rpm Im surprised you can drive it anywhere at all :signLOL:
surely thats going to kill the rods/pistons more than high rpm?
did you log the dyno run too , for things like timing etc ? just out of interest
well done that man :happy2:
-

Ah, but remember it only has that power if I turn the nitrous on. Normal day to day traffic it is turned off and when it is on it only activates when using full throttle (unless I change the settings)
AFR was 11.5 and max timing retardation so far has been under 4. Boost, EGR and rail pressures are all well within normal running parameters :happy2:
-
Just looked on www.letstorquebhp.com and put my bhp and weight in and got these back....
Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 440
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1350
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 331.16
0 - 60 (Secs) : 4.22
0 - 100 (Secs) : 8.70
60 - 100 (Secs) : 4.48
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.38
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 119.28
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.18
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 121.46
Not far off what I did with the GPS performance box

talk us through activating it then. is it pretty much on standby all the time, and when you suddenly decide you need to rinse somebody can you litterally just flick a switch on and off you go, or do you need to stop and activate it??
-
Flick a trigger guard and flick the switch and it is permanently armed (no need to stop and turn off/on etc). I can use it straight away, but won't get full power from the bottles until they are warmed up. It takes 5 mins to warm the bottles through, until then you get between 80-100% of the power, depending on the bottle pressure.
I can also turn the heaters on and leave the nitrous in standby.
The nitrous can be programmed to be brought in at any revs in any gear and at any % of full power from 20% upwards. I can bring the power in steadily over 5 stages or give the engine an instant hit in one gear and then back the power down. There are 4 programmable memories in the system and each one can be set for different utilisations. For example, I can have one for track, two for the 1/4 mile and one for a dyno test.
The system constantly measures AFR's, nitrous and fuel flow pressures and if any are outside operating specifications, then the nitrous sytem shuts down. That is about as simple as I can explain it really. :happy2:
-
so the trigger arms it, then i guess there is a seperate "go faster button". do you just leave it in stand by then?? or is that not good for the system
-
The nitrous is operated automatically by throttle input. The point at which the throttle activates the nitrous can be programmed, so if you like you can have it at WOT like I have or on any % of throttle. Obviously it tends to work best when WOT :happy2: You can leave it in standby, but you run the risk of forgetting and leaving it heating the bottles when the ignition is off.....and that will flatten the battery.
-
something doesn't calculate right to me.
You have 340WHP , and that is a wheel dyno.
on our car powertrain loss is around 10-12% at max.
so going by that route , you are suppoused to see no more than 380bhp at the flywheel.
what is the compensation built into that dyno ?
also , can you please tell me if the data is raw or SAE ?
-
just been catching up on this thread and crongrats john, you are of course insane, but love how you go about what you do fella :notworthy:
-
I didn't know you could have such a complex, yet flexible system for applying the NOS - sounds like you invested wisely, rather than some chav blast it all in system.
I'm impressed. And want a go. :happy2:
I played with a mate's MKIV at Inters running around 420bhp on the day (usually is around 500) and whilst my launching was duff using a manual 'box and in a car I'd never driven, when it got going it was fricking hilarious!! With DSG's LC it'd be manic.
-
I didn't know you could have such a complex, yet flexible system for applying the NOS - sounds like you invested wisely, rather than some chav blast it all in system.
....John has had it all done by Wizard(?) who are world renowned and considered the best Nossers in the business. They're also based just down the road from him and so lots of consultation possible and very precisely tailor-made results.

this is a DD dyno right ? so it measures wheel hore power and not flywheel.
basically then there is simple math of power loss added for compensation.
don't get me wrong , 340whp is very good , but no way that it can translate to over 400 flywheel hp on a fwd car.
-
I think your confusing the before and after NOS results.
He got
340bhp & 380lb/ft without NOS
438bhp & 510lb/ft with NOS
I'm sure they are both FWHP figures.
-
they are all flywheel figures.

I bought it through Steve at Statllers and had it fitted by Wizards of NOS

:happy2:
Yep, before nitrous and with nitrous.
-
Just been thinking to myself and with rods and clutchpack and 150 jets in, the car would be......................
490bhp and 560+lbft.......on a Dyno Dynamics roller!! :scared:  :scared:  :driver: :rolleye:
-
Now that would shock a few Ferrari's
