Hey folks,
Sorry to be over-dramatic with the title.
I have been offered an ED30 steering wheel, which has DSG paddles and volume controls etc
If I make sure I have the correct slip ring & Steering control module, would I be right in assuming it is OK to make the paddle shift work and MFSW options work?
It's going in on Friday for big service / cruise control fitting, so figured whilst they had the wheel off, why not stick another one back on and code it there and then.
VW dealer just told me they THINK it should be OK, but wondered if the paddles may not code as it's off a newish ED30 (2008) - but surely if I provide the correct SCM (CH version) that would be ok?
It's just mine is an older GTI (2005) I just wanted to be sure,
Many thanks in advance,
Sean

I think the only difference will be the red stitching! :signLOL:
The paddles are just switches, and I have added the post 2006 buttons to my 2005 GTI wheel (mine came off of a Passat R36) and they work fine with the original modules.

You sir, are a gent!
Thanks man, means I can get the parts ordered in advance ready - will let you know how I get on! :)
-
I've a brand new boxed steering control module 1PO959542 here, 71.46 + vat from the stealer. Drop me a line if you want it for £40 inc p&p.
-
How much is the cruise control costing you? If you don't mind me asking that is!
Can it be retrofitted to any mk5?

Think so and I think I'm right in saying it's a standard price of £155 from any dealer for parts and fitting

Had it retro fitted to my '08 DSG GTI no bother.

£155 all in... Although they will no doubt say I need an extra wire... But all in should mean all in! :)

Hey guys, which airbag connector do I need?
Single purple wire airbag connector : VW# 1k0 971 584 c
Or
Dual wire harness with multifunction harness: VW# 1k0 971 584 L
I will be re-using the airbag from my existing wheel.

I believe you want the second of the two although I dont know the part numbers, a quick google image search on that part number comes up with the right images.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.forum-auto.com%2Fmesimages%2F176342%2Fimage21uc1.jpg&hash=ec18e0ad8d5f1d5157267086bb0688678d4002b4)
You want one of these in the picture with one lead from the yellow master connector to the purple airbag connector, and a second lead that goes to the control module inside the steerig wheel.

Thanks again Rich, you've been a big help with this.
I will order that part from VW as I called a SEAT dealer I usually use and he said it's VW only and doesn't show on his system.

I've bought a steering control module;
1k0 953 549 AQ
According to ross-tech ;
1K0-953-549-AQ Type 2 SW 0070 Highline Yes 1.6
Which should in theory = MFSW & CRUISE Compatability.
Do you think this will work OK? Even if the ED30 wheel is off a 2008 model?
Everyone seems to buy the 'CH' variant of the SCM, but I wonder if that's just because it's new/current version available from VW / and more for MK6 retrofit wheels.
My old one is 1K0-953-549-F Type 2 SW 0050 Midline Yes - -
So the difference being 'highline = multifunction' but also the SW 0050 on my current vs SW 0070 on the AQ variant. Also LIN version (whatever that is, is 1.6 or AQ and n/a for the F part)
# Slip Rings
* Type 1: 1K0-959-653 and 1K0-959-653-A
* Type 2: 1K0-959-653-C and 1K0-959-653-D
# Variants
* Lowline: No additional Options/Features
* Midline: Cruise Control, Board Computer
* Highline: Cruise Control, Board Computer, Multi-Function Steering Wheel
Fingers crossed, and either way, thanks to TonyT for supplying the SCM at a decent price.
I hope my ramblings help others searching for threads similar in the future! :grin:

Sean
I have the following im my car
Address 16: Steering wheel Labels: 1K0-953-549-MY8.lbl
Part No SW: 1K0 953 549 AG HW: 1K0 953 549 AG
Component: J0527 634 0070
Coding: 0012142
Shop #: WSC 00200 210 69017
Part No: XXXXXXXXXXX
Component: E0221 007 0050
No fault code found.
So think your AQ will be newer and so more than suitable, and a quick google search found me the Ross tech wiki and says mine has the same functionality as yours so should all be good! :happy2:
1K0-953-549-AG Type 2 SW 0070 Highline Yes 1.6 -

Now all I need to worry about is if I have the right slip ring! lol :)
Appreciate that though Rich mate! Looking good I hope!!! :D :happy2:
-
My Ed30 has the AQ module and i have paddles, MFSW and cruise control :happy2:
-
I'd be interested to know if this works out for you as I also have an E30 SW with paddles to go on my 05 GTi.
Good luck with it and hope it all goes smoothly :happy2:

Update -
They are short staffed so couldn't finish it today which is fine as I still have a courtesy car, but the worst bit, is that the airbag wire I had ordered on TUESDAY... Apparantly 'didn't get ordered'
Don't ask how that happens... It's pathetic in my view if they can't even order a part when you do most of the work for them (give them part number etc).
Oh well, fingers crossed for Monday! :laugh:
-
That's typical mate, it's not exactly difficult to order the right parts especially when you gave them the part numbers :confused:
Hope it all goes well on Monday :happy2:

Update -
Job done, and to be fair, whilst it took til today to get my car back, and they didn't order a part when I originally asked them to, I have to say CREDIT and recommendation VW Inchscape in Chelmsford.
They've done exactly as I asked.
The MFSW some functionality is missing - I will make a seperate thread about this.
Overall though! Well pleased! Paddles work a dream!

Good news Sean, interested to know what functionality you have.
