Title: RNS 510 Bluetooth
Post by: coop on August 03, 2010, 02:12:51 pm
Hi Guys

Ive just been looking into fitting a mic to get the voice control working and this is what ive been told I need:

http://www.kufatec.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p1483_Voice-control---Retrofit---VW-RNS-510.html

Which looks perfect, however if im going to fit a bluetooth kit at some point I guess it would come with a mic, so i may as well just go for a bluetooth kit now. Can anyone recommend what to go for, will the mic which comes with whatever kit work with the voice control and will I need to do any coding? Cheers

That setup would be included with the OEM kit.

There are a couple of options, which to be honest have been covered quite well recently -

1Z0 729B Interface - Supports RNS510 and Highline Dash, doesn't support Apple IOS4
1Z0 729D/E Interface - Supports RNS510 and Apple IOS4, doesn't support Highline Dash
7P6 730C Interface - Supports RNS510, A2DP (Although some extra wiring is required) and Apple IOS 4, doesn't support Highline Dash.

You should expect to have to do some coding.

Thanks again VRSTU for you help, so i'm not worried about mac support and I don't have a high line so it looks like the best option for my rns510 ver C would be the 7P6 730C Interface right? any suggestions on what to pay and where to get one? Cheers

I think there are a few of us here that have them available, SteveP, Darren (Mortygttdi) or myself.  Also you could perhaps try the usual places like eBay etc.

I've also herd allot of people mention Fiscon as an option, would you go for the 7P6 730C over this. I need it to work with android and possibly ios4.
Title: Re: RNS 510 Bluetooth
Post by: SteveP on August 03, 2010, 09:31:20 pm
The fiscon won't be able to share or use an OEM style mic.

I have also heard reports of issues with the fiscon and phones running both IOS 4 and Android from another forum.

Do you have Highline in your car?

No highline, sounds like I need the 7P6 730C. Basically the boxes it needs to tick are:

SatNav / Phone Voice control
Android and IOS4 support
Full compatibility with RNS 510 Ver C

Nope that's the older 729E which doesn't support A2DP

You Want this one

The 7P6 is for the white dash insert which is why we said that it doesn't support red dash insert above.  It will work in your car but will not display on the dash insert.

Steve - I've just had a look at some of my wiring looms, they are fitted with the extra wires for A2DP.  Did you look the one you had the other day??

So I think I need the 1Z0 729D/E as I dont need A2DP?

The 729E was the unit of choice until recently, and to be honest probably still is.  Judging by what you've said it'll serve your needs.

So long as you don't intend to use an IOS4 device.

If I were you I'd go with the 729E over that as you don't have Highline anyway.

Guys, following the thread above, if I got the 729E unit for use with my "B" Rev RNS and Iphone 3GS 4.01, would the fact that I do have highline screw it up. I'm not too bothered in it displaying on the highline screen, but will it cause other issues ?

Will I still be able to use the other highline functions (Audio, Nav etc.) ? Will the MFSW phone buttons control the RNS and switch the screen to the phone screen, or would that be a purely manual operation (i.e pressing the button on the RNS) ?

Cheers

Only white ones. i.e. Mk6 Golf and facelift Octy.

No I used a 729E in mine for a while and it has been used in another MK5 Golf successfully with no problems.

Andrew, my MFSW buttons don't control the start/finish calls. The * button mutes, the volume buttons work with RNS or call volume, but the phone button does nothing. This is most likely because my buttons were a retrofit, not from factory, as was the 729E.

However, the touch screen and unit buttons on RNS510 are so easy to use with the phone interface. You'll  be using them to select names/numbers drom your phone's memory, so it really isn't any hardship to tap the green phone on the screen to go, red to end. I can control volume from the wheel, I just can't start or end a call from there. Which doesn't faze me at all.

Ahh, cheers buddy for the info. Strange that the phone button doesn't do anything. I guess from yuor description you have the later style buttons (with the Star button and Menu button) ?. I have the older style with the 2 phone buttons on the left. One to initiate a call and one to end. I currently use this with a parrot CK3000 Evolution installed into the car, using a CAN harness to integrate with the steering wheel buttons, and it works fine, but as far as the RNS is aware, it just mutes during a call and routes the call through the speakers and that's all. No contacts, or "PHONE" appears on the screen.

It actually works quite well, but I was getting a little tired of the Iphones built in Voice dialling which can be a bit hit and miss, and so was considering the genuine article so to speak.

I have the same setup as Lou, with new buttons, RNS but with a 729B  And again the phone button wont answer or hang up calls, I believe its more to do with the different commands between the VW MFSW and the Skoda UHV unit, so you might find it works with the older buttons.

Thanks guys for your help I went for the 729E on ebay, paid £300 inc delivery, no doubt ill need some advice on the install but ill give it ago, my only concern so far is getting around the airbags in the columns, im assuming this isn't going to be a problem. Cheers
Title: Re: RNS 510 Bluetooth
Post by: Richn83 on August 04, 2010, 10:20:24 am
That bits fairly easy, just follow stu guide and you'll be fine, the biggest issue is actually feeding the mic cable across the head lining to the central light cluster.  I ended up using some speaker wire and sellotaping this to the mic cable to drag it across.
Title: Re: RNS 510 Bluetooth
Post by: vRStu on August 04, 2010, 10:26:05 am
You will need to be careful with the airbags make sure you feed the cable under the bag so that it won't interfere with it if it is deployed.

If you bought this kit (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OEM-BLUETOOTH-HANDSFREE-KIT-RNS510-MFD3-VW-SKODA-/270608876021?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CE_GPS_Accessories_Software_ET&hash=item3f018bc1f5#ht_3501wt_1137) then I'm afraid you are missing some parts.  It pisses me off to be honest as they sell it to people who quite rightly assume they've got everything.

You will also need to order the following from your dealer -

1Z0 971 813 62U - Covering Black or 1Z0 971 813 3AU Covering Ivory
N909 460 01 - Expanding Nut x2
N908 170 03 - Torx Screw x2
6U0 819 055 - Clip x2
1Z0 035 185 - Bracket x 1

I always include these with a kit as it saves any messing around.

So Stu, are you saying that you also sell this kits directly to forum members ? If so how much for a kit that will work with a "B" version RNS (firmware 1300), and an Iphone 3GS (4.01). I also have the older style MFSW with the 2 phone buttons. I appreciate the comments that it wont work in my highline Red display, but so long as the other functions work (Audio, Nav, MFA etc. ) then that's fine by me, happy to use the RNS screen, but it would be cool if the MFSW telephone buttons still worked like they do with my current parrot kit ?.

Cheers

Andrew

I normally try to keep a few kits in, most of mine go overseas but if someone here wants one then sure I can do that.

The MFSW buttons are a bit it and miss as you've seen from some of the replies here so in some respects it's a bit suck it and see I'm afraid.

My wiring looms aren't plug and play like the one in the picture, I don't think it's the best solution to be honest (for two reasons - I think the double Quadlock is far too bulky for behind the dashboard and the female Quadlock is often not of good quality or doesn't have all the pins in it.) The ones I use are wired for voice control of the RNS510, I'm not sure that one is.

I can't see the loom in any detail.  He says it supports Voice Control but I'm not sure if that includes voice control of the RNS510.  There is a bracket missing which I think is 1K0 919 737M.

Im a bit worried now, ive just googled the bracket I need and I found a install guide where someone has fiited the bluetooth unit under the seat, which looks way to advanced for me, will I may be able to fit this unit behind the stereo and do I definatly need the bracket?
Title: Re: RNS 510 Bluetooth
Post by: vRStu on August 04, 2010, 11:49:46 am
In some respects you can fit it where you like so long as you have the space.  The OEM bracket and position is under the seat, it is for pretty much all of these solutions.

I wouldn't be too sure it'll go behind the radio myself as it's quite a big interface.
Title: Re: RNS 510 Bluetooth
Post by: SteveP on August 04, 2010, 11:52:07 am
It's much better to fit it under the seat and buy the bracket like Stu says.

I agree with his point on the double quadlock being bulky, but the ones from car-systems are good quality, I just personally re-wrap the loom in VW tape. They are also wired for VC too.

If you want help fitting then I am saw one of us on here will help. Where are you located?

You do also know it will need coding to the car with VCDS?

It's too big for the dash. It fits well under the seat. A few Velcro pads stuck to the underside ensures it grips the carpet and won't slide. That's how mine is

The bracket etc is very easy to fit under the seat, and well worth it

The hardest bit is runnning the wire loom inside the door sill
