I don't know if this is just me.
Basically the forum quite often hangs or doesn't respond at all. For example tonight i clicked on the Bookmark in my Menu Bar for this site. Home page loads up no problem. Clicked "show new replies to your posts" and it took nearly 11 minutes to show me the posts. I thought this maybe my internet but i could load other websites no problem.
Also trying to reply to threads the same thing happens.
I tried it using a 3G connection and it does the same thing. I tried it on chrome to see if it was a safari issue and also tried on windows to make sure not an OS X issue.
It doesn't do it all the time but it is doing it enough to make it annoying and is starting to get to the point where it's doing it more often than not.

happens to me all the time too
-
Being crap for me this evening and most of the day today too
-
Hasnt been good since the server change.
-
I get that quite often too, it just seems to stall.
-
yep, I get the same
-
me too :rolleye: just did it then waited ages for the page to come up
-
I am aware of the issues which appear to be related to a massive increase in use of the search function from guests and members
I have also tracked an issue with the way the forum database indexes are working (or not to be accurate)
I am make some more changes tonight and will continue to monitor the situation

thanx Uncle Buck :happy2:
-
:booty:
It may get even slower for the next 30mins :fighting2:

If the search feature is hammering it and "Guests" are able to use it, is it worth trying to restrict the search function to members only - prevents bots from trawling it and slowing us down
-
That's already been done.
-
Ah cool ok, couple of posts up you said it was guests using the search function a lot thats all :)
-
Guest and members, it was disabled for guests as of last night :happy2:
I am running some more checks on the indexes now so expect things to slow down for the next hour or so.
-
The speed is fine for me but I seem to have lost the search function.
-
^^^^
Good idea to disable the Search function for guests anyway. The ability to Search is invaluable and it's only fair that registered members' use of it shouldn't be compromised.
I only experience the forum slowness (loading) randomly and never as long as 11 minutes as reported.
Great job you're doing, Steve.. Great forum :drinking:

....Me too but I expect it's only while Steve does some tinkering under the bonnet.

It disabled for everyone while I update the indexes. It's 45% through and it's been running 2 1/2 hours, as soon as it's done I will re-enable the search function.
-
Ahh . . OK thanks
Yeah the search function is wonderful, it stops me from posting up lots of numptie questons when the answers are already at the touch of a button :happy2:
-
Any chance of banning Gif's, pain in the arse and cant scroll down a thread with them.T88OMM has loaded a motion picture feature film for his sig
-
+1 on Steve's point. Some of these things aren't really essential and do cause an unneeded load when online.

i got my hands slapped so should he!

Search has been re-enabled :happy2:
-
what about limiting the amount of times users can search in a particular time frame?
say 15 seconds or so?
Including the "new posts" button. I do hammer that a lot!

....I think that people will find that extremely frustrating, Jay. I'm sure I would.
Sometimes I need to do more than one Search in quick succession in order to post some helpful info to someone or to a thread... I don't want that process to take time or delay me.
-
I take it people haven't seen as many slow downs in the past 24-36 hours?
-
Nope everything seems to be working fine at the mo Steve :notworthy:

Sometimes when browsing on my ipad or iphone is realllllly slow. it doesnt happen with other forums though. I thought it might be the iphone/ipad for a min but nope.
What happens is, you'll press on a new thread, the blue bar behind the text on the address bar (in safari) will get to about 10% and just hang. I then have to stop it loading, then press refresh.
Another thing that is happening recently too is PM's not working too great.
Ill receive a PM, type a reply, press send and ill get the hanging on the address bar again. To the point where safari times out. Then i go back to the Inbox, thinking, ill try again, but the Pm has actually sent.
I found out this was a problem a few weeks back when I sent Luke @ Plush a PM of the same message about 3 times! haha!

I have that issue on the 3GS. Not noticed it today but doesn't always happen.

I've had no slowdown at all, on pc or iphone, since Steve's update :happy2:

That's not something I have seen safari on IOS devices yet myself Jay.
I use Atomic browser on my iPad to do 99% of stuff on the site and have no problems.
I will do some checks on Safari to see want I can find :happy2:
