Title: Ipod and armrest dock and MDI and RNS 510
Post by: heavyd on August 07, 2010, 10:15:49 am
I have an rns 510, and an ipod dock in my armrest. I was after a way of having my ipod display the track names etc on the rns. I read through some posts and could not make any sense of them!
I was wondering if there was a way of still using the armrest dock but updating the cables?
If I buy an mdi cable, do I have to remover the RNS to fit it, or is there a cable I could replace halfway or something?
Thanks in advance for any replies :happy2:

Hi Dom you will never get track names unless you do 1 of 2 things 1)by CD with cd text info on them then you will get names on tracks or 2)by the newer MDI module and cable then you will get every thing your ipod is displaying.

Yep, I know that, I was basically asking if I could plumb and MDI cable into my armrest! But would I have to hake the headunit out to do it, or does the OEM armrest lead plug into something before it goes into the back of the headunit?
I saw how much of a pain it was for you to install, so I dont fancy taking it back out to fit an MDI into the back of it :rolleye:

It's one cable from the bottom of the mdi unit to the back of the RNS, there's nothing else in between it. You will have to remove the RNS to fit the cable.

I think what Darren was referring to is that your existing Ipod dock isn't capable of any track name or control over it no matter what cable you use. The good thing is though that if you already have the armrest ipod dock, then it's a doddle to fit the MDI dock in place if it and plug the new cable in.

So basically you need 3 parts. An MDI dock unit, the cable and the ipod adaptor cable that plugs into the mdi unit and then plugs into the bottom of the ipod. There's also a USB cable version that would allow you to use USB memory sticks instead of an ipod.
