Title: Plastic rattle/creaking noise on top of dash.
Post by: CAPTAIN BRITAIN on August 08, 2010, 10:36:58 am
Has anyone else got a creaking and rattly noise from around the air vents on top of the dashboard,
Only really notice it whilst driving on rough bit of road (that's about 95% of roads in london)
Is there a fix for this, as it makes the golf sound cheap and flimsy, Not a good image if your carrying passengers

I have the same problem.  I started a thread to ask about how to take the cover off.  Might be useful:

I was going to play around with some possible felt lining or some strategically placed tape.  So far....i've not been successful in taking the top cover off.  I'm scared i'm going to break something.  :scared:

There is a section behind the air vents that's known for causing a squeak. You'll need to have a little search for it though on the forums. Someone did a guide.

I hate dismantling stuff as i find i can never get bits to go back in the way they came out  :ashamed:
But i'll give it a try and have a poke around under the plastic vent thing.  :scared:

It's very easy to take that cover off, just use a credit card to pry it open, then unclip the sensor wire, and have a look, some cars have foam where 2 screws tighten in, that is supposed to stop the rattle.

What I did was buy some double sided tape circles, and put them around the base, almost 'jamming' the cover on when it was back in place.

Has worked a bit, not perfect, but until a better solution comes up it will do!

Sounds like a plan, I've got some small adhesive felt stickers  here so i might stick some of them under there

I bought an inerior trim removal tool set off the bay for less than £10 just to ensure I didnt scratch anything. It was simple enough to do. Just felt line everywhere plastic contacts!

U think the gti is bad?

I used to have a clio on coilovers. Was set harder than Ron Jerremy's c**k!

If something didnt rattle itself loose or drop off, i'd be concerned

What you need is a small wedge of wood or form of plastic wedge, which if you remove the lower half of the top vent housing, there is a gap thats about 10mm. It has a stainless steel edge from memory where you fit the small wedge, and it then stops the top of the dash creaking.

Its not "just put sticky pads" under the grill on the top, its actually under that ,behind the radio that needs wedg' ing

On a warm day I have an awful squeak from teh left hand side of the glove box.  When I press hard against the glovebox door it stops. I just need a chance to strip it down and see if i can wedge in some cloth when rebuilding it.

I had this, like many others too!

Took it apart with patients as wasn't going to scratch anything, there was a good guide somewhere but I reseated it packed out with black duck tape, never came back again!

Watch out for the sterring coloum plastic housing too, mine wasn't tight but it sounded like a window was goina drop out!  :stupid:
