Title: S3 Brakes do they fit........... Fronts yes, rears??
Post by: QD MBE on January 30, 2009, 08:11:40 pm
After some searching, I gather that S3 Fronts are R32 with a simple re badge.  But the question is this - Will the rears fit, some say yes, and the only issue being the security of the stone guard, but there is no real firm evidence (that i could find!)

So any firm evidence..........................

also same as the leon cupra as well
not exactly firm evidence but some issues were talked about on another thread on here (think it was in the technical)

iirc, neg is having the same thoughts about this rear install.

TT said they wouldnt fit

The R32 rear brakes will NOT fit the Edition 30, nor any other front wheel drive Golf V platform car.

The R32, and the identical spec S3 rear brakes will ONLY fit a four wheel drive car.  The hubs are different, and the wheel bearings are different.

If you really wanted to put the R32/S3 rear brakes on a GTI/Ed30/Leon Cupra R/Octy vRS - then you will need some serious modification to the rear suspension setup, including:
  • two new rear hubs
  • two new rear wheel bearings
  • two outer CV joint "housing" (to support the rear wheel bearing)
  • two new handbrake cables
  • along with the entire rear brake setup (calipers, caliper carriers, discs, backplates, pads)

Boy, there seems to be some mis-information creeping into this forum!

From all the info I have seen and a guy in the states who has done it they sounds like they do fit.  Once I get my set painted I will find out...

Having just said yes to buying some S3 rears from DaveB I'm now somewhat concerned to read T_T's post saying (if I understand it correctly) that it's a No-No without additional major work (quoted in Reply #3).

But my understanding is that both stokeballoon and Hurdy have successfully fitted S3 rear brakes without doing what T_T says must be done.

Robin, T_T was wrong.  The S3's fit spot on.  I had  mine fitted within 2 hours and that was taking pics along the way.

I think the last line in your quote in post 3 sums it up.

Thanks DR - Panic over!

Yes, it also occurred to me after I had posted my concerns that DaveB wouldn't be selling them without stating any extras were needed.

Panic over and sorry - But you know how convincing Sean's info can be and I don't doubt his sincerity in what he believes is correct.

Very nice OZ's, danish!

After some searching, I gather that S3 Fronts are R32 with a simple re badge

I thought this for some time but there seems to be slight differences.
The piston and carrier is the same but the casting is a different shape....chunkier!!!

Have had the s3 rears on the LEON for overa year now and they helped ballance things out.
A worthwhile mod
Very easy fit too with a little persuasion of the dust shields.

exactly rught, i have s3 front and rears the fronts are different in shape and have the logo badge spring clip the pads are the same. the rears are the same as the r32 and are easy to fit, but as said the bottom of the shield needs tweeking with some pligers and the hole ovaling out with a drill bit its a 2 minute job

i ve had the wheels off my s3 this week to fit 19 "wheels and while they were off cleaning , calipers etc and imo the rears look pretty much the same as gti , the fronts are massive though   they look different to my mates 3.2 tt which are the same as the r32

Well when I eventually get the S3 brakes for mine, I would love to be able to fit em myself. I'm sure Icould do it, but to be honest, of all the mechanical jobs i've ever done I have never changed a set of pads, or done the brake fluid and bleeding. :sad1: I would love to know how one day!
Stokeballoon, thats a great "How-to"  :congrats:

It does depend on model year and availability, I've had quite a few sets of R32 fronts which have the counterweight even though they're not on ETKA - only the S3 and S4.

I've also removed S3 fronts from scrappy S3's and they didn't have the chunky bit on the casting
