I've always gone for Castrol Edge - had no problems.  That's down to not knowing Mobil did a suitable oil for the GTI.

I guess the important thing is that they are both VW spec in which case it shouldn't really matter.

P.S.  Personally, I would not mix oil from different manufacturers.  So if you go for one...I would use that for the oil service and then stick to top ups from the same brand.

I  noticed that my "old" stealer that used to service the car always used Castrol Edge, but the new one used Mobile 1.

Didn't know mobile 1 was VW approved until I asked ?

It's odd when you consider that on the oil caps it says they recommend castrol.

They 'recommend' whoever they have a contract with at the time to supply their oil ... as long as its approved to the correct standard - thats the main thing.

Mobil 5w-30 ESP is the only VW approved Mobil oil.  (Or at least it was, things may have changed ...)

Crucially, does it state "approved by Volkswagen/Audi to xxxx standard"?

An oil can state it "meets" the requirements, but unless it is "approved" I would stay well away. Needs to be approved to 504

I read T_T's post in another thread. He states that the ESP stuff has been approved, but otherwise keep away from other mobil1 products.

£23 for 5 litres from a dealer sounds really really cheap what oil was it exactly?
The washer fluid, if the VW own brand, has the mix recommendations on the bottle ( picture symbols if I remember)

I get the same stuff. It's called Quantum (although i think i paid a bit more than £23) and is basically VAG's own oil which iirc is made by Castrol for them.
