Title: Can I / Will this fit (this Highline dash part number?) Now fitted and working.
Post by: SeanyK on August 11, 2010, 11:07:20 pm
Hey folks, looking for a highline been offered a couple but both different part numbers!

1K6920974A

OR

1K6920973A

OR

1K0920972A

All are highline dashes but will they work?

Mine is a 2005 Golf GTI

Thanks in advance! :)

Sean unless you can find some pre 2006 clocks then you will need someone with VAS to code the clocks to your car, as they need to get the security code from VW server in Germany.  So best bet is to give Shark performance a call they are the only guys that I know of other than VW directly that can do this, they should hopefully be able to recommend the part number you need for your car.   :happy2:

Hi mate!

I was quoted £420 for supplied and fitted highline from Shark dash.

Dealer want an hours labour to code new ones.

Would I be right in saying I could buy ANY of the above clocks if I was getting them done at a dealer? As they can code any?

Sean you need to take your clocks out and check the last number of the dials

you should have

961 , 962 , 963, or 4

whatever you have needs to be replaced with the subsequent 7

so

961 for a 971 , 962 for a 972 , 963 with a 973

if it is a 4 you are f*cked as this is the expensive one !

hope this helps !  :happy2:

Joe > How easy is it to replace the screen mate?

BritishLion > Hi mate, if I take the clocks out, is it going to reset anything like immobiliser etc? As I only have 1 key at the moment (waiting for highline and will code a 2nd key at the same time as saves time).
Or is it just something I can do with no after-effects?

(Or even better, something that can be read via VCDS?)

Hum !

Darren tried to read mine but couldn't something to do with pin codes !

From what i am told it makes no difference to take out the screen (no alarm problems etc)

but as always i stand to be corrected by wiser forum people

Right................... The screen can be swapped in 5 mins, its hard locating a new screen though.

The golf has 3 immobilizers, 1 in the key, 1 in the ECU and one in the Clocks, you need to use a program called VAG COMANDER to re-program the clocks to the ECU and Keys, otherwize it will start for about 2 seconds and then cut out.

part number can be read via VCDS for example I have the following:

Address 17: Instruments        Labels: 1K0-920-xxx-17.lbl
   Part No: 1K6 920 962
   Component: KOMBIINSTRUMENT VDD 1012
   Coding: 0007403
   Shop #: WSC 00217 210 91054

No fault code found.

My instruments show;

1K6 920 960 D

So assume by that logic, I need 970 part number?

If VW dealers are coding it though, does that mean I can get ANY highline dash, or do I still need to get the 1k6 920 970?
Title: Re: Can I / Will this fit (this Highline dash part number?)

basically any cluster up to 06 plate golf with prefix 962 will work with another golf up to the same age if you know what i mean?
I can get the code from the cluster of a set of clocks that end either 960, 961, 962 the ones ending 963 and 964 are ones that Ben @ Shark Performance, Hazzy Dayz or Richter Sport can do.
The clocks i have in end 972 so I know that is a cut off has Stefans(Britishlion) clocks end 963 and would not give me any info?

Cheers

I got quoted about £250 from a dealer for the dash but that particular dealer wanted £220 to fit it!

Another VW Dealer quoted £110 for fitting/coding so going by that logic, £360 total... Im tempted! Saves hunting for second hand clocks!

I was quoted something around £250+vat by a dealer in Northern Ireland (P&R)  for 1K6 920 973X Z02 a month ago.

Ben told me he hasn't got a US cluster to work yet...

Do you know what, thinking about all this, I just don't think im gonna risk it with a second hand one, im just gonna bite the bullet and order a brand new one from the dealer and ask them to fit it.

It's only money! Early Xmas present to myself! Will take 6 months to pay off all this stuff i've done on the car lately lol but its worth it!

I know what you mean. At least you have some come back with the dealer but its still an expensive upgrade. Let me know how you get on, am considering something similar myself.

One thing I have heard is that there is a surcharge on the clock unless you return the old unit, (think its off the Hazydays site) and a midline for a highline doesnt work, so might be worth double checking you arent going to get a nasty suprise
Title: Re: Can I / Will this fit (this Highline dash part number?)
Post by: LouCyffer on August 13, 2010, 02:11:08 pm
Hazzydayz say that the old unit is returned to VW, so I presume there is no surcharge to their quote. However my dealer said that a £100 surcharge would be applied if going from midline to highline if they did it, as there was no exchange between the two types, only like for like. So hazzydayz has the win so far over the dealer

Norbreak21a(Andrew) had his cluster swapped to the highline by HazzyDayz and has nothing but high regards for them, But I also know Joe had his clocks and keys coded when he was in abit of a rush to get his car on the road and Ben sorted it asap.

Post by: SeanyK on September 01, 2010, 10:55:12 pm
Hi mate,

I can get you a highline ending 972 as It didn't work in mine... Im not sure the ins and outs, but im pretty sure I couldn't read the immobiliser code from it, that said my friend was who was the guy doing it using Vag Commander. He's no expert so it could have been something he did.

That said, im happy to sell it if your after one, not up for ripping anyone off, just want to get back what I paid for it only.

It's flawless but one of the plastic screwhole bits (there are 2 in total) which you have the 2 screws that hold them in to the dash, one of the the bottom part of plastic has a small bit broken off (but i've tried this and it makes no difference as the screw still screws the plastic down. So just mentioning it for the hell of it really! (Thats at the bottom of it, nothing to do with the speedo/clocks themself just the screw-down part!)

Trying to explain it is useless, but imagine a circle screwhole, with a bit missing which makes it a semi-circle, but the screw covers ALL of it (ie still holds it down).

...Make sense? Didnt think so... lol! :)

Hiya Darren mate,

We only tried it a few times but got this error;

When reading the mileage it read it fine.

Then when clicking 'Read Security Access Code' for my old dash it worked fine (960 version midline)

When I had the new dash in, it just came up when I tried to read it;

"Security access code not found!Reset instrument cluster and try again"

I tried that, it made no difference :( Maybe they stuck the IMMO4 in a few earlier 972's?

If its the right one you should have a button that says read/write immo then when you go into that you need to read the immob data ...then in the bottom corner the skc code can be seen.

I wasn't clicking in read/write immo, I was only clicking 'read security access code' as thats what the VWVortex guide had said to do?
And thats what I had clicked to get the code from the midline dash I had, and it worked?  Was I doin it wrong then?

ok mate,

from what iv been reading i thought you could put clusters of 972 and below in a stock 972 car but not 972 in a stock 970 or 971 car??

if that makes sense? im sure darren will put it right though
Title: Re: Can I / Will this fit (this Highline dash part number?)
Post by: mortygttdi on September 02, 2010, 12:02:11 am
Sean Maloosheck who did the original vwvortex highline diy thread basically worked out if you go into the bin files and save them you dont need to even need the skc code, try going into the read/write data then do me a screen shot of that, if you have another go at it and let me know when you are doing it ill go through it on the phone with you...

Apollo my cluster was 961B i then had a 971F and now have 972FX R32 cluster has long has your car is before sept 2006 and the cluster is on or before 972 then you should be fine.

Darren, you are absolutely right...

For anyone interested I found this;

http://furmanka.blogspot.com/2008/02/mk5-mfd-plus-hi-line-cluster.html

It shows a 'different' way to the VWVortex way, this way as Darren is saying, using a save/open method which is far easier.

Can't sodding believe that - happy obviously in one way though! Now I gotta wait til works over tommorow to try :(

yeah thats what i thought morty,

trying to find a 972 diesel cluster was proving to be such a pain i thought id go down the mk6 mfsw route with maybe an earlier cluster instead of the 972 and the mk5 wheel with new button layout!

even though iv already got all the stuff for the mk5 mfsw swap.

did get the mk6 wheel for a steal though!!

No worries at all mate, ha ha I was quite a noob with my MFSW I got VW to do it  :ashamed: was too scared of the airbag going off on me!
If I can manage to code the dash all up tommorow then happy to help mate! I got the MFSW with later MK5 buttons (it's an ED30 wheel).

And Darren thanks again as always (presses thanks button x 100)

Weirdly, that page doesn't mention key coding! So looks like will need the VW Vortex guide & That guide almost as a combo!

Title: Highline dash - Fitted & Working!
Post by: SeanyK on September 02, 2010, 09:55:56 pm
Hey folks! This evening marked a success, I set out to change to a highline dash which was a failed attempt last night... After Darren (MortyGTTDI) mentioned there is a 'easier' way, everything became that bit more simple!

I came back from work, and at 8pm set out to install and program the highline cluster - it was done shortly after! I even enabled a couple of extra things like auto door locking at 10mph and unlocking when taking key out...

Anyway, all seems OK so far, I am able to control my Alpine stereo through the MFSW, the track select works, the star button mutes the sound, the OK button, when in 'Alpine' mode, allows me to switch between Tuner, iPod, Aux, USB etc

As for the highline options, I took some photographs, sorry about the quality, it's an iPhone4 but the flash was getting a bit carried away due to it being nighttime, and me being rubbish with it!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FSpacekidUK%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_0029.jpg&hash=092b82b61756567136faf88add4a00630d83ef6a)

All in all very happy! Now I just need to work out how to code an extra key, I only have 1 key, but have a brand new blank transponder and flip key already cut to the car so just need to program them to match is that possible or dealer only?

Also, not sure if im just being paranoid! But im sure my wipers were 'juddering' every so often, like as if they are about to move but the wiper motor is stopping them... They do work as I tried them manually and thats with the 'auto' setting on, I think im just being paranoid though!

No fault codes (apart from the radio but thats due to me having an Alpine stereo and not a stock stereo) I did the adaptation via VCDS to clear the ABS & Steering errors thanks to Darren & Teutonic_Tamer for there help on here last night :)

Sean

Sean the wipers do move about,  they try and go back down into the bonnet when not active for a length of time...they also move down when on the motorway at speed.

Hey guys :) Many thanks, not bad considering when I bought the car I said I wouldn't mod it.

So far i've done the Stereo/Sounds, 18" Monza 2 Upgrade, Servicing + belts/pumps/dsg oil, ED30 Paddled MFSW, New DV (d revision), Cruise control and Highline Dash upgrade - In 2 months ownership!

I think next... Is 2 new tyres (lol the 2 front ones are brand new but 2 rears will need changing) then a refurb on the wheels ( I got them very cheap! But they are a bit scuffed hence low price). And then I reckon a Revo! :)

Sean regards the extra key, use ross tech website for the immobilzer part but the remote locking is easy...just go into module 46 convenience controller and then adaptations channel 2 is for key learning, put a 1 in the value and save it then take the keys out of the ignition and press open or close on the fobs you want to code until they respond to the locking...this needs to be done within the 15 second time frame.

Cheers

Does this mean you do not have to buy the key from vw?!?

I don't think you have to. I thought there was a way of coding another key without VCDS? Something like put the first key in, take it out and then put the second one in.

Also, not sure if im just being paranoid! But im sure my wipers were 'juddering' every so often, like as if they are about to move but the wiper motor is stopping them... They do work as I tried them manually and thats with the 'auto' setting on, I think im just being paranoid though!
Is this when you turn on/off the ignition?  If so (and the wipers just briefly 'twitch' about 5mm), then this is normal - it's called 'alternate park position' - basically it cleverly alternates the parking position of the wiper blades, to maximise blade life.  :congrats:

No fault codes (apart from the radio but thats due to me having an Alpine stereo and not a stock stereo) I did the adaptation via VCDS to clear the ABS & Steering errors thanks to Darren & Teutonic_Tamer for there help on here last night :)
You're welcome.  And thanks to you for such a detailed follow up in the thread.
