Sadly, i need to start saving and mate if mine is buying my stage1 gti
well stealing it really at that price, anyway
Loved the huge torque handling image etc but need to move in,i have 6k ish for nxt toy, have company car for boring stuff so not doing mega miles but cant justify wrx style mpg even though ilove them. So what to get?
S2000, hmmm I'm 6-2 and it rains a lot up here,
Bmw 330 sport? High running costs looks like a 318 sport
Ep3 type r? Bit chavy and no torque?
I'm 27 btw so would prefer 3door or sporty ish
Will get another gti in couple of years love them but what should i get?
-
If you have a company car have you considered a motorbike if its just a for fun kinda thing?
Or some kind of track toy?
-
Ha motorbikes a def no,company car is branded and generally totally uncool, drive at night and wknds so still needs to be respectible for the girls fun to drive and not a money pit, would love a boxster but false economy. At 6-7grand.
was thinking maybe even a 225 tt mk1,or cooper s,but image of both is slightly suspect lol.
-
Megane 225?
-
Late MK1 Cupra R.........
-

-
i know and imo very good cars! just dont buy one new :signLOL: they will hang around that price for some time yet i think.
-
I'm looking for something similar actually, wont buy a Reno again after a nighmare of an experience with a Clio the wife had. Looking at a Cooper S I think, fun car for a few months.
-
wow,
Might look into it but did once state that id never buy a fiat, vauxhall or renault, mite have to eat my words as these were highly praised, reliability?
-
My mate will take £6K for his immaculate Cupra R: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1952779.htm :happy2:
-
Thanks but a bit undecided on the old cupras, any thoughts on a type r?
-
Late MK1 Cupra R.........
+1, the 225bhp version is fun

Are you after something small and fun or medium sized..?

Go drive one, cant imagine it being upto the GTI standars though. Will lack instant over taking power unless dropped a few gears.
-
That's the killer, test drive are fine but living with such a peaky unit might be a different story.
dont the older cupras share the same chassis as mk4golf and mk1tt,?
-
mk1 Leon is a Golf mk4 with a A3 interior and a bigger boot of course
-
So a mk1 tt is a mk4 golf with cupra engine and 4 wheel drive?
Mk4golf s were totally slated though which worries me bout the cupra,tt and a3 of the time.
-
Ps,thanks to every1. That's commented i posted on a few forums and some just dont have the sense of online comunity they have here, :indifferent:
-
Out of the box the mk4, A3, mk1 Leon aren't great handling wise, but it doesn't take much to get them very good :happy2:
-
^^^^ Agree with Gaz but the Cupra is still better outta the box than a MK4.
You will get bored with the Type R very quickly, you have to ring it's neck constantly to get anything like the performance of a Turbo'd car.
PS, there's a reason the Renaults are so cheap!
-
Hmm,what sort of suspension mods would be recomended in a mk1 cupra?

Coilies and ARB's I would imagine would sort it good and proper! :happy2:
-
Matt, yep probably. SEAT dealer in Notts. Was only a few months old at the time. £2k's worth of satnav went also and then they refused to pay out on insurance for it!
I agree the out the box the mk1 Leon is better than the mk4 golf, maybe aside from the Anniversary as that came with the better engine and 6 speed box - oh and looked the best.
-
2004 silver blobeye impreza 80k same owner since new,100% standard 5k
I'm very very tempted,220bhp 4wd
Any impreza veterans here,

Try this link for suspension.

For a stock 5 door hatch I thought the handling was not bad. The engine is easily tunable to 260BHP+ and the standard Brembo brakes aren't bad either! :happy2:
Some guides here also

I'd avoid the Type-R's Steve. My only reason being a friend has one is Red on an 05 (facelift ep3) and does very little miles in it, something like 2,000 a year. Where it's sat on his drive from being in the sun, he's got very pink rear quarter panels. That alone was enough to put me off them :chicken:
If I had that cash, I'd be looking at the suggestions so far which are sensible, the 225 TT, a Meggy 225 & so on... I've had a Renault before and it did have problems, but nothing too troublesome. Took a real hammering too.
Personally with £6k though I'd get a 3door Mk4 Golf GT TDi 130 - decent fuel economy, lighter than the Mk5 and a map will see 170hp ish? Perhaps not fun but that'd be where my investment would go. Might just have the low end torque of the GTI for overtaking etc?

Thanks,I'm starting to steer away from the r but not still keep goin back to the 330 sport,or impreza, but both shoking mpg,the mk4 in my eyes has had its day,and tts are incredibly overpriced,
the megan and leon are feasible and will need to try before i buy,
The leftfield alternative is a mr2 turbo lol, altho winter is not kind to 250+ matchboxes.
Celica gt4 isnt going to go down with the chicks.

I used to think that but having driven a few recently I've changed my opinion. The MK4's are far better built and engineered than the MK5. Get yourself a clean MK4 Anniversary and it will be pretty much depreciation proof and a dream to drive! :happy2:
-
225 megs are not the best mate, if you do make sure it has cup pack, lots don't. Cupra r would be my choice if you want 4 seats.

Agreed Nath. I think it'll be a while before the MK4 TDIs have little purpose. You don't see many anniversary models around now (both petrol or diesel) so bit of exclusivity there too.
Be worth having on your list as an economic option Steve if none of the others tickle your fancy.

Thats not a bad shout. Still think the Cupra R is worth a look
-
If you've not had a Cupra R then thet are worth a look, great looking and great value for what you get.
-
I had a cupra R as it had a much better ride/handling mix than any other mk4 based product. I simply would not own a mk4 at the time due to the handling. The Cupra R imo was the best of the bunch. The R32 i found too hard with no handling benifit over the cupra R but thats just my opinion. If its bragging rights that float your boat It was also faster round the topgear test track than the mk5/type R at the time they first reviewed the mk5 if you look at the time board of that topgear program which they conveniently forgot to show just a fleeting glance of it. I would own another mk1 leon again without question, i liked both of ours.
