Title: DSG and Snow ....
Post by: SO8 on February 01, 2009, 04:48:10 pm
Being a London type person I can' t really remember the last time we had snow - other than I had a Scooby at the time so couldn't have cared less ....

Now, with a DSG Edition 30 I wondered if there are any special settings for snow or slush ??

I can't see any in the owner's manual - not even the usual drive very slowly and avoid anything other than delicate touches of the brakes, etc, etc.  Other autos go into, say, 3rd with a 'snow' button but if the DSG is manually set to, say, 3rd .... and the gearbox doesn't like it then it changes down ....

Any views ?

1. Keep the Traction control on
2. Drive steadily
3. Leave it in D mode

As Hurdy says in snow and slush  :happy2:

although I sometimes use manual mode on downhill sections to engine brake

It's stopping on icy downhill slopes where DSG is a bit of a worry to me ... what do peeps do in this situation ?

^ PMSL I always wondered why they did not fit a winter setting to the DSG box in the GTI.

4. Progressive on the brakes when needed

There is a W - winter switch on the GT 170 TDI, I think that one just adjusts the torque output. Don't know if it adjusts the DSG settings though.

Do you petrol engined cars have the "w" button infront of the gear selector ??

(W = Winter ( according to the O/M) )

TBH not sure if even the oil burners in the uk have it - not like snow is a real problem

....Use Manual mode for engine braking or leave it in D-mode, or apply the brakes very gently indeed (and relish the fact that AP Racing brakes have a very direct pedal response feel).

Going uphill I found that the Quaife was amazing at instantly extinguishing any TC light flickers and restoring traction (was at slow 20 mph speeds on totally ungritted A-road).
