Title: bluetooth and RNS510?
Post by: M1llh0use on August 21, 2010, 12:30:35 pm
just picked up the new (to us) GTI and having a bit of an issue working out how to pair the phone to the car. Reading the manual it seems that you need an extra unit for bluetooth.

How do i determine weather this is fitted or not?

Hi,

To determine whether it's fitted or not, switch blue tooth on your phone, then sit in the car and all being well the car IIRC should pick up the mobile. If it doesn't it sounds like you may not have it fitted.

Were you told the car has blue tooth installed ? If so did they say what version Kufatec or similar? Mine has the Skoda version and it works well.

Does the car have Sat Nav too? If so press the phone button...yes it does as you say in the title doh...press the phone button and once blue tooth has connected it should pic up your phone book. :happy2:

It might be an aftermarket unit rather than a vw oem one.

try searching for BT with your phone then start the car, sometimes the bluetooth is set to visible for only a short time so you cannot just sit there with the ignition or the car started trying to find a connection.

Just to clarify and confirm what Darren is saying, it is the car that remains discoverable so you need to search with the handset and not hope the car finds the handset.

If there's a unit working in concert with the 510, when you press the 'phone' button on the head unit, the screen will change to something along the lines of 'no phone attached'.

If there's no unit the 'phone' button will mute the audio but the screen won't change.

Simples :happy2:

Ok that solves it then, when you press phone it just mutes.

Cheers for the info!

You're welcome. I heartily recommend getting one of those systems fitted though. It transforms the 510. Brilliant!

However, if the dealer stated one was already fitted, you have a good case for 'misrepresentation of goods'. Perhaps it will give you a good lever to use to get a nice discount on the dealer retro fitting one?

so dealer not interested in doing anything (can't really say i'm surprised, independant trader without any service operation)

Is it possible to retro fit an OEM bluetooth kit?

If so what do i need to enable a bluetooth connection to the headunit?

OEM retrofit is entirely possible.

I have a guide on my Octavia website (www.octavia-vrs.com) which albeit a little old now will give you a rough idea.  It uses similar parts.

I have a retrofit OEM system and it's great. Our own SteveP supplied & fitted mine. Also  Stu & MortyGTTDi can do the same. Depends on where you are in the UK.

It's a good forum, this  :signLOL:

I paid £240 fitted.

That was used though wasn't it.  I don't think you'd get a new setup for that money.
