Title: Got Myself a HTC Desire, advice?
Post by: keith on August 21, 2010, 03:13:40 pm
I bought a HTC Desire yesterday and very impressed with, is there anyone else on here using one and can recommend any apps or programs that would be good for it. Takes a bit of getting used to after using a Nokia E63  added the air horn app first thing this morning and used it to wake the wife up, I am now in hiding.
Also a decent gel cover/case.

The list goes on...

myPlayer
Barcode Scanner (ZXing Team)
Gmail Unread Count
RAC Traffic

Also, check that you have the latest version of Android (2.2, also known as Froyo) - Settings > About Phone > Software information > Android version will be 2.2 if you have it already. If not, then when you can get it depends on whether your Desire is locked to a network. Most networks are releasing it in the next few weeks (Vodafone next week for example). Desires that were purchased SIM-free can get it now.
You can check for availability by going Settings > About Phone > System Software Updates > Check Now. Big download so best via WiFi.

This is where it gets complicated

In their infinite wisdom, Vodafone decided to release a version of the current software (2.1) with a bunch of Vodafone "extras" just a couple of days after HTC released the generic 2.2 update. Confused (and upset) quite a few people in the process.
The official release date for Voda 2.2 is 23rd August (see here (http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/topic/70251-htc-desire-firmware-update-200810/page__p__464253&#entry464253?s=c04eb06268a0902a49722c49f17d69c9)) - if you've got a Vodafone-locked Desire and got an update a couple of weeks ago then it wasn't 2.2 - you've still got that goodness to come......

But - if you didn't buy your Desire directly from the network (and the same applies to all the networks, not just Vodafone) but instead got it from CPW or another independent dealer then there's a good chance it's a SIM-free version, which means you probably did get 2.2 a couple of weeks ago (or could get it now). Only way to be sure is to check the Software Information menu.

Just checked and mine definitely says I have Android Version 2.2 right at the top of the Software Information page :jumpmove:
I'm with Vodaphone, but got the phone through Carphone Warehouse which sells the SIM free model :jumpmove:

Win Win for me then :happy2:

I <3 my Desire, best phone ever.
I rooted it and am running a custom 2.2 ROM on there, all sorts of fun apps.

Andromote - if you have a media server of some kind on your network this app lets you play it through the wifi connection, music, video, etc.
Astrid - to do list, task manager
Astro (task manager)
Appbrain
App 2 SD
Dropbox
FXCamera (all sorts of cool filters)
Google Goggles
Google Sky Map (seriously awesome software this)
Handycalc
IPConfig
Titanium backup (requires root)
Urbanspoon
Voice Search
Wapedia
Wifi Analyzer

Also some tech-related ones... ConnectBot (which allows for Telnet/SSH access), SwiFTP which lets your phone act like an FTP server, etc, etc.

I've got the Wildfire Keith and its absolutely fantastic. It does everything I'll ever need from a phone and more.
Best bit is the handset was free on my tariff @ Voda.

The Barcode scanner app is one I'd recommend highly, quite insane how good that technology is when used on websites to download apps  :jumping:

I've downloaded that as well, make sure you get the update for it though, it adds a train horn to the list.

Gah, why does this forum always stop notifying me about new posts.....

Mrs has a Wildfire, which for the price is a great phone. She loves it - just waiting for the Froyo update for that now.

More than one of my friends has now ditched their iphone and purchased a Desire, or a Galaxy S, or a Wildfire. Not seen anyone go the other way yet.....

Friend has got a Wildfire and is waiting for the root to be done for it. I had a play with it today, it's a smart little phone. Prefer the acres of screen space on my Desire though.

Just updated my Desire to latest radio version... better cellular and wireless signal and more battery life. Mmmm...

I'm sure I'll come up with an excuse for rooting mine soon enough - spent enough time cooking WinMo ROMs in the past......  :signLOL:

I got a Desire yesterday. Does anyone notice the signal changing so much. When its in my pocket i have no signal then when i take it out i have 4 bars wtf. Then with it on the table the bars change up and down. Seems very sensitive to position change.

Battery life does seem very poor, i read somewhere that you need to charge for 8 hours then turn on then charge for another hour or some random routine.

Has everyone updated to 2.2?

Battery life is OK for me, easily lasts a day and thats with two email accounts (one Exchange and one Gmail) and a fair few calls as well plus bog browsing and music to/from work.

Surely a day is not acceptable or is it for these new "smart phones"?

TBH it depends on what you use the phone for - it's easy enough to drain the battery of any smartphone in a few hours.

I get about 30 hours of battery out of my Desire; that's with phone calls, three emails (work, uni, gmail), twitter, etc., but wifi is off most of the time. Wifi is a big battery killer as is bluetooth, so turn those off if you're not using them.

Also, the 2.2 official update includes a new radio software which improves battery life significantly. Get the official 2.2 update from HTC, or if you've got the skills root and flash the latest radio onto whatever ROM you're running.

I have turned wifi off now as i thought that may be a power drain Cant turn Bluetooth off though otherwise i will have to adjust it everytime i get in or out my car for the Bluetooth phone kit. On my old phone i had 3 options, BT on, off or hidden. Once paired up to the car i put it on hidden and it was great always connected to the car but stopped nobs down the pub trying to send stuff to peoples phones. With the desire i can only see "on" or "off" am i missing something?

If you go to Menu > Wireless & Networks > Bluetooth Settings there are options to set device name, Make Device Discoverable (which is what you want I think - make sure this is set to off after you've paired), and then some more advanced settings.

Alternatively there's the HTC widget to turn Bluetooth on/off or you can get something like the Switchpro widget.

if you spend a reasonable amount of time at home, its worth getting it to auto use wireless (your home router) when in range.
uses less power than 3G  :happy2:
theres also a GSM PRL tweak for scanning cell tower data 2G<>3G for the NexusOne but Im not sure if it works on the Desire

^ True that Johno.

That feature does seem to drink my battery though on my Wildfire though. A guy at work who has the Desire says its not affected his battery life.

Has anyone come across 'Swype' for Android?
This looks a fantastic app but I missed out on the BETA and its currently withdrawn as a download. Are there any apps that do a similar thing for Android?

Thanks.

I've just got mine today and this is the first proper smartphone I've had(upgraded from a Nokia 5230)
and I'm a little concerned about how hot it gets where the simcard goes.
Is this normal,or have I got a duff handset?

Battery makes it hot, I have a battery app that tells you the temperature and it goes up quite a lot.

My Tracks is good if you like walking.

Etherophone is a good one for getting on peoples' nerves (or your dog's if you have one!).

Alchemy is a good game, as is Winds Of Steel. Talking Tom is a bit of fun.

I sometimes use Opera Mini, too, as I'm on 3 and they don't let you look at anything they consider adult (sniffpetrol comes under this). Using Opera as an alternative browser gets around this annoyance.

For anyone that's seen Swype and liked the idea but missed it like me, or wants something free that does the same job, try SlideIT.

Excellent little app that does basically the same thing as Swype. It's maybe not quite as polished as Swype but it's an excellent free substitute  :happy2:

is it sim free or on contract and and if its on contract it depends to which network carrier you are subscribed to. I hope its not 3 well htc desire is pretty nice phone and did you buy htc accessories (http://www.fones.com/mobile-accessories/htc.html) other than gelli case pls do share over all no major cons related to htc desire...
