Title: Decided to sell
Post by: Hurdy on August 21, 2010, 05:25:59 pm
Well after 3 and a bit years I've decided to look for a new car and the Ed30 is up for sale in the classifieds.

I haven't got the foggiest what I want next and so will most likely be pootling around in the wife's car till something grabs my attention.

All I know is I want something different!

4x4?
RWD?

what do you reckon?

What about the BMW 1M John, it's being released towwards the end of the year. They are RWD and will be very tuneable

Good call Tom, although I hope it doesn't look saggy in the middle like the normal 1 series cars.

I quite fancy Stokey's Cayman S too.
Then there's a few trackcars
I just don't know.

Nooooooooooo hurdy. You're one of the few people on here whose cars inspire others (including me) to modify and forms a benchmark against which to compare one's car.

Whatever car you get, please continue with a member's rides thread so we can keep up to date!

fooking hell, v surprised by this, really thought you were gonna hold onto it! oh well, on to bigger and better things... Is it still running? Mind going down the pass for one last spin? Awesome car it has to be said, was looking for to what you were going to do to it but I'm sure the next project will be just as good!

Now then, the new car   Don't know why but I love trawling through the classifieds looking at cars. So, do you want a new/used one? Keeping it VAG/German? DSG is a must I take it? Turbo'd too?  Take it this time you can afford to have 2/3drs as well. Think 4x4 is a must too, 500 lb/ft through the front wheels is just crazy  :jumping: :driver:

Okay I've locked the for sale thread, so will pull any discussion into here or my project thread :happy2:

Okay, for clarification.

Currently the car runs, but isn't boosting as it should which points to an as yet unidentified boost/turbo issue. Other than this the car runs perfectly well.
Before I even let anyone buy it and take it off the drive it will be spot on.

With 50bhp jets the car ran brilliantly without any clutch slip but with 100bhp jets the car would need the SSP clutchpack for 500whp/lbft.

Other than that someone can simply walk into a 400bhp/450lbft fully modified car for just £3k more than the car would sell as stock.

Remember, this car also has over £3k in audio equipment in it, £2k of suspension mods, £1.5k of lightweight alloys and tyres + a spare set of road tyres, £1.5k+ of carbon fibre mods, £2k+ of nitrous kit, front and rear brakes that would cost £2k+ just to buy, £2k+ of bolt-ons on the engine, a Quaife diff in the DSG that would cost £1.3k to fit, software that costs £800+ etc etc so that is well over £16k of kit (more to fit!)- this is a bargain.....no it's a steal!!!!!

After also changing to a cayman s recently I can highly recommend them, I looked at a few cars in particular a 1 series but after coming from a bilstein, arb and engine mounted car I found the ride a bit too comfy if you know what i mean. I reckon the 1m will be a bit more focused

After about 5mins of test driving the cayman My mind was made up, it a very involving drive similar to my modded gti, not quite as powerful as stage 2+ but handling, rwd fun and cabin noise make up for it

And if you crave more power just speak to parr performance Porsche nr gatwick as they do a £11k turbo upgrade for a nice. 420-470hp on stock internals :driver:

I doubt it will be an MTM supercharged RS4 as I'm almost certain that they have had issues with it's reliability. :sad1:

S3 is a possibility, but not from the current model  . May get something to "pootle" around in until the new S3/RS3 comes out......AMG Merc maybe

that is what you need.  EVO FQ360.   you'll b hitting 500Hp with bolt ons and mapping.  and it'd still be tractable

I promised the wife at least an Ubermobile, so a ricemobile is out...........for now  .

I've spoken to DomT about EVO's as he had one with 600+bhp and he assures me that they aren't easy to use as daily runabouts or cruisers.

c63 amg can be had from 35k used! Major running costs tough petrol wise. 14mpg with normal driving never mind ragging it. Also 1800kg so wil eat tyres and brakes.

fair point.  must admit my mates WR1 isnt easy to drive slowly.  lightened flywheel and paddle clutch make pootling around a nightmare.

Not fussed about mpg as the mileage I do is low (sub 9k a yr).

507bhp and 464lbft

lol wasn't what I thought you were hankering after, was thinking along the lines of lupo/polo gti as a run about and a DSG xbow for those weekend drives on the snake and ring :D

Not a bad idea Luke. I love the Lupo GTI (had one and it was a lovely buzzy little car) and the X-bow can be uprated to 450bhp and with just 800kg would be a mean machine on track.

I'm just hankering after a chunk of Bavarian muscle car, so may test drive a couple to see if the urge goes away or not :jumping:

The future is 2 cars, I've come to realise modding a car for track use 20 days a year makes it a pain in the arse for the other 345.

Pick up a decent R26.R and have a powerhouse of a road car. RWD only.

....That's certainly one option and it suits some people, but. You need the space to keep 2 cars and you've got insurance, tax, servicing, consumables, etc, x 2. Having a car just to do 20 days a year doesn't make sense to me but I fully appreciate it does to many people. We're all different :happy2: 8) :happy2:
Title: Re: Decided to sell
Post by: tony_danza on August 22, 2010, 11:24:26 am
Very true, Robin - he had mentioned thinking of having 2 cars though, so I think that'd be the best plan maybe, given he has 2 very different needs of a car there's little choice off the shelf. It'd be a case of going down the same modding road again, does he want to do that??

Cars always cost money, they're a waste in many respects - he could buy a brand new £50k weapon and lose £10k as it rolls off the forecourt, or he could plough the kind of money he has on the ED30 into something else and lose that. He could run 2 cars and face the costs of that... it's all going down the pan!

Two cars is a good option - It won't be this year but the R.26 or the Clio (like Mike) seems such a good trackday car. Can save money by transporting it rather than having it taxed etc - a little saving, and also you have savings on the general wear and tear on both vehicles as neither are track AND daily.

Title: Re: Decided to sell
Post by: Janner_Sy on August 22, 2010, 12:52:19 pm
two cars as my plan.  but i agree with RR on this.  i found out that it is actually alot more expensive having two motors rather than just the one quick car.  So im selling both and just going to pick up one car for the pair of us.

This time im going to try and make it really good on the road first as a pose to track.  as mr danza said, having a car tha oly does 15-20 track days a year and road work the other 345 is annoying.

Mercedes E55 AMG 476 bhp 516ft/lbs 0-60 4.5 secs take the limiter off 200mph. If the wife wants a bit of german luxury you're not going to beat this. And they starting from around the 12k mark for a 2004 car.

Yep, there's not a right way or a wrong way in running either one or two cars. They all cost money but either way it's money well spent if you love what you do in your car/s  :happy2:

I'd be particularly pissed off if an ed30 was as quick as an E55 unless it was the ed 30 which is being currently sold. However if you wanted to do some work on the big Merc take a look at Vath for Mercedes tuning...VATH    And if you need that little bit of alrounderness take the estate version. I've been looking at E55's recently but struggling to justify  a seriously large petrol bill for 20k plus annual mileage on the commute. BUt hey you only live once

And we're back to the stock verses modified clarification...and there's no point, hence the bit in bold! I don't know what you've done to your K1 but I reckon it ain't factory fresh out of the box fully stock. And we all know what Hurdys done to his. It'll be hard to sell John, specially with all the work you've put into it.

Obviously the sensible thing to do is, extend your driveway to store it, spend some more money on it, make it quite unpractical and use it a couple of dozen times a year.

My Ed30 cost 29k+ and another 10k of mods and more planned for the future, but I would be loathe to sell it as I bought it for good.  Finanically it doesn't make sense, especially as I won't be using it for another 4 to 5 years, but I'm too attached to that car to sell up.  I plan to take it to shows and the very occasionaly trackday when I return, while using another car as a  daily drive.

Yeah they've had it since June, to be fair they did say they would fit it in around they racing commitments and I have had a few custom made bits which have taken some time and a wait for the Recaros, I also had a complete re-spray on the interior and roll cage (white), Flocked the dashboard & pillar trims and transferring electronics to race steering wheel. Plus all the VW Racing bits

For once I had to agree with the Mrs when she said "why didn't you do it in the Winter, muppet"  :ashamed:

I feel the same as Illyun and Neil.. I've put so much into making my GTI more how I like it and no matter what else I drive I always enjoy getting back into my GTI. It's the allrounder aspect which is so awesome: This afternoon I transported a 6'x2' panel of fence for example. 3 girlies plus hand luggage to Paris next month and also a trip planned to Nurburgring.

The only future replacement I can think of is the Audi RS3 if Sportback and only if it has S-tronic (DSG) and the TT-RS engine.

I like John's idea of selling it with the mods but just adding some £££ above the book price. It breaks my heart seeing superbly modded cars like John's converted back to standard.

The only thing you're going to do is make it faster in a straight line, and any idiot can do that and there'll still be others faster than you.

CSL, brakes, enjoy. Depreciation proof motoring and probably the most alive you'll ever feel in a normal-ish car.

400BHP per tonne on a standard engine, 20k to build, very adjustable, retro chic. 345/45/15 Tyres on the back same as the Countach I had on my wall as a kid....got to be done either that or I buy myself an aerobatic toy and frickin kill myself that way

Im seriously trying to source some bits once I get rid of the last of my brake collection and move house

I reckon it has lost all its money, if you came to sell it and pitched it favourably......................

But what a monster, the drivers seat is on a pivot too, so you can see out of the side window easily............

stock vs hurdys ed30 from 30-130 the golf would be quicker.

Yep, with the awkward launch out of the equation 30-130 in mine would be around 12 seconds.

How much torque does that V10 have?

520 nm = 384lbft

Mine 692nm = 510lbft

Until tomorrow anyway  :sad1:

....Great car and that Sport Diff is a great feature, but it's only a lightly supercharged V6 3-litre and hasn't the grunt of a V8 RS. 19mpg versus 12mpg when enjoying it.

Its a very involving drive and i can see that not been to everyone's taste, but get it out on a country road, hammer round some twisities and hear that 3.4l flat six sing to you is just incredible  :happy2:
