Title: How's this GTI?
Post by: Mike90 on August 23, 2010, 10:20:54 pm
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201032365780884/sort/priceasc/usedcars/colour/black/maximum-age/up_to_4_years_old/quantity-of-doors/3/price-from/8000/price-to/12000/engine-size-cars/2l_to_2-5l/fuel-type/petrol/model/golf/make/volkswagen/page/1/radius/200/postcode/gl24qd?logcode=p

Thinking of going to look at this GTI, is there anything there that screams avoid?

I'm not usually one for high mileage cars, but 70k in 4.5 years says to me its been sat on the motorway for most of its life.

I know it doesn't mention FSH but I'm waiting to here back from the seller about that.

My initial preferences were Black 3dr with full leather and 18" Monza's, this fulfills all that and more.

Any comments/suggestions/advice more than welcome  :happy2:

Welcome to the forum Mike.  :happy2:

it looks straight enough from the description.  The only thing that jumps out at me is it says that it is owned by a VW tec. My question is why would a VW tec be chugging up and down the motorway all day. Of course there could be many reasons for this but columbo would be asking.

You really cant tell anything without a viewing.  :happy2:

Cheers Boss

Yeah odd thing to mention that, I've sent him a message asking all sorts so I'll see what he says.

It's 150 miles away so I'm only going to view if I'm absolutely certain its what I want.

I'm struggling to find examples I like the look of and are in my price range, the residuals on these are fairly solid!

I can afford more than 10k but I'm not sure if its worth it spending 12k on a 3/4 year old Golf...

Just be careful not to go there with beer goggles on, just because its got the spec you want, there are lots of GTI's coming into this bracket now, so if you have any doubts, then walk away, another one will be along soon enough.  :happy2:

I know what you mean, it's so easy to fall into the "I Want" mode and miss the completely obvious.

I was initially set on getting a 57/08 Cupra, then I sat it one and realized the interior is horrendous. Shame really as the Aero kitted one's look gorgeous.

FVWSH, Seller is the VW tech, 3 owners from new, Faultless and in perfect condition apparently

Sounds decent enough, not sure if I can look past the high mileage though, I mean in a year it'll be over 80k

A very well looked after high miler will be better proposition than a poorly maintained low-miler.  Depends the way it's used, too.

One lad on here (Alexander?) Is on about 110k with no real problems.

I've got an 06 on 95k and its been remapped for about 25k and had no problems whatsoever!

Always serviced at VW and maintained using decent parts and it's spot on!

Make sure it's had the cam belt done though as VW advise 4 years or 120k

Just be careful not to go there with beer goggles on...

Deffo don't want that! You may borrow my rose tinted glasses though

Car looks very nice . Just look out for a comprehensive service history and you'll be half way there.

However the leather looks quite worn and saggy though :sad1:

Cheers for the replies.

One in my OP is a little bit far for me to travel, its actually over 200 miles away and thats a long way to go for me to find something I don't like.

I've seen this one: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201034366604554/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/13000/colour/black/fuel-type/petrol/engine-size-cars/2l_to_2-5l/price-from/8000/maximum-mileage/up_to_80000_miles/model/golf/make/volkswagen/saved-search-id/2c92182b2a648886012aa64fb46e0042/postcode/gl24qd/radius/100/page/1?logcode=p

Which is much closer to home, going to give the guy a call about it tomorrow. Leather looks a little tired but I'm not expecting perfection, just a well looked after car with nothing to hide.

Anything that says no about that car above then?

Ideally yeah, but if a stonking deal turns up in another colour then I would consider it.

Im only really sticking to black as its a safe colour, and i thinking the GTI looks good in it.

Gloucester, I'm not travelling hundreds of miles all around the country to look at cars. Been there before and had my time wasted.

I know what you mean but sometimes to find the right one you have to travel

I posted that one earlier, looks good going to give them a call tomorrow.

I've got myself looking at Edition 30's now though!  :scared:

you wont find many of them for 10k

10k isn't the top of my budget, it's just the most I'd spend on a normal GTI.

Sellers are over valuing them anyway, that's why the same ads have been up for months.

What do we reckon then boys? It lacks the DSG I wanted but you cant have everything, I've quickly realized that and I'm bored of waiting.

I haven't driven a normal GTI but I just know i'll be disappointed coming from a 270bhp LCR. I think it's worth stretching for the ED30, the tuning potential is so much better.

Ideally yes, if I bought one without it would be one of the first things I'd change.

Thing is, I looked around and genuine second hand 18's are unbelievably rare?

That looks great to me. I would be interested if a bit nearer. Nice low miler and seems to have the history to back it all up. Think they look so much better with tints.

I really like it - and don't even want DSG!

I emailed them about movement on the price and they went down to 13,500 straight away so you could probably get it for 13 if you really tried.

I've seen this one: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201032365329650/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-from/8000/quantity-of-doors/3/colour/black/engine-size-cars/2l_to_2-5l/maximum-mileage/up_to_80000_miles/price-to/13000/fuel-type/petrol/model/golf/make/volkswagen/postcode/gl24qd/page/3/radius/100?logcode=p

Looks good with a nice spec, DSG too, only thing that put me off was the 4 owners but 1 is VW, 2 private and the last being the dealer now. FSH is all from VW too.

I've got my heart set on DSG for some reason, without ever driving a car with it, I've always had manual boxes.
