Right, I thought I'd start a build thread as I've done a few bits and bobs to my car since purchasing.
Before I start, a quick history of my past cars:
My first car was a MK3 Golf GTI in TR! Loved it to bits (I was only 17!) Previous owner put 17" alloys and a DTM exhaust on it and thats how it stayed until i sold it :happy2:
Next came a Civic VTI B18 in Pearl Black, was nice but it was a civic! Whilst owning this I also brought a 406 Coupe as I loved the shape at the time.
Next I traded in the Civic for a Golf VR6 Highline in BMP and the fun began!
OMG this car sounded the nuts! I quickly sold the 406 coupe to fund a few mods I had in mind for the VR6.
The VR6 was totally standard and had all the factory Highline upgrades. I modded this car to exactly how I wanted it then not long after I sold it on. (still miss this car :sad1:)
Then I stayed with VAG and brought myself an LCR.
This is the only pic I could find of it:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fll289%2Fswf7y%2FCheesy133-002-1.jpg&hash=e6113a3f798c0b61bc5e5515e95c486778bfb1e6)
I loved the fact that you get so much kit as standard and didnt want to mess with it much. So all I did was add an CAI, Revo stage 1, upgraded the brakes and added a couple of guages. Car was pushing around 270+ and was QUICK!
After about a year, I sold this and brought a BMW 325CI. This was nice, had loads of optional extras but found it too slow even though it was re-mapped.
So I sold that and statred searching for a new car....

Continued...
After much deliberation I opted to buy another Golf. This time a MK5 GTI with DSG in TR. I really wanted CW but couldnt find a clean example for how much I could afford to spend.
This is as I brought it:
At first I wasn't too keen on th 19" alloys but soon grew to like them.
Anyways, I soon got to work!
First up, it needed a drop and I opted to go Koni coilovers just for the name and the fact that damping could be adjusted as well as ride height.
Before it was dropped:

After coilovers were installed:

Since taking this photo, the front has been dropped a little more
One thing I didn't like was the black rear bumper, side skirts and front lip... Something had to be done!
I decided to colour code the skirts, R32 rear end and Osir front lip.
These are the results.

I forgot to tell the bodyshop not to spray the lower centre section :fighting:
Owel, i'll sort it soon or even remove it!

Continued...
Next up, I needed to finish off the rear end. I wanted to fit an exhaust that sounded throaty but not loud. After much searching on various forums I decided on a Milltek Cat-back but failed to get hold of one! No-one seemed to have it in stock, so bored of waiting, I decided I was going to go the custom route.
I ended up at MIJ Performance and told them what I wanted (I had now changed my mind and wanted a Turbo-Back).
When I took the car to them, the engineer advised me to leave the Pre-Cat and go for a de-cat and cat-back. He said it wont make a difference as to wether I get it done or not. I decided to go ahead with the de-cat and cat-back knowing I can always get the downpipe done later. I went for 2.75mm pipe diameter.
Here are some pics of how it looks:

It sounds slightly louder that stock at the moment but I am advised it will get louder as it beds it. However, thats fine by me!
It may just be in my head but it feels alot better now. More urgent throttle response and mid-range torque. Very pleased with that. I guess de-catting make a huge difference.

:happy2: My bad!! :signLOL:

I've also changed the rear tyres to Vredesteins. These have made a huge difference.
I would recommend these highly.
Discs and Pads have been upgraded to Pagid slotted discs and pads.

Again, these have made a big difference. Much better than OEM.
Next up is a CAI. Most likely going to be a Twintake. Then re-map and a few other styling mods.
Let me know what you think everyone. All views are welcome... :happy2:
-
Very much liking the r32 rear! Mind me asking what sort price that would set someone back? The wheels look Huge! Do you think you've lost some comfort or driveability with them? Love the colour too!

Great thread - Superb Car

Thanks parks. Managed to get the lower valance off eBay for a total of £125 then I had it re-sprayed and also exhaust and valance needed too! Slippery slope... As RR would say! Think it's worth it though :driver:
Wheels do make it a little less comfortable, especially because it's lowered too but cuz they are so wide you get better grip and handling. Might change them soon though.

Where did you get the front spoiler from mate? I am on the hunt for a new one.
Loving the thread, some good mods there.
-
Cheers mate.
Imported from America. Was cheaper than buying from TT Shop.

Quick update...
I skipped the twintake and dived in feet first for a re-map!
Car has been totally transformed. Re-map was done at R-Tech. I would highly recommend these guys. Great job as well as a great attitude. Pound for pound, this is by far the best mod you can do to your car IMO.
I had the DSG software revo'd too. This is a great mod. Manual mode is exactly that now.
Next up, Twintake (I hope!) then downpipe and upgrade to stage 2!
I'll keep updating as I slide down the slippery slope....

Absolutely stunning car! :happy2:

Youre welcome , I pick my Tornado Red GTI up tomorrow , I doubt it will ever look as good as yours , but I'm liking that shine!! :notworthy:

^^^^^^^^
Nice of you to say so mate but I've seen many better than mine!
Make sure you post some pics up :happy2:
-
I will , although it will take me a while to get it how I want it!
-
Apart from the rims (which I'm still unsure about), the car looks better and better with each mod!

:signLOL: cheers mate. The rims are a 'grower' (just made that word up!). Wasn't too keen on them myself at first but I think they suit the car. Looking to change them for TD Pro Race 1.2 or 1.3s when I can raise up the funds!
-
R32 rear end is sweet as :happy2:
-
Got myself a real CF front badge thanks to a certain member selling his amazing ED30 and putting it back to standard.

Also, gave the car a quick wash and took a few pics.
Apologies for the amateur photo skills :signLOL:

You don't seem to be hanging around when it comes to getting it looking the way you want it! :happy2:
Keep up the good work!

I have an OSIR front grille mask that has a slight crack in it that I may part ex for your grille? PM me for more info!

Another update:
After getting the carbon badge off Hurdy, my carbon fettish has continued thanks to Greeners!
Also, thanks to Neg for the red GTi Badges....
I also had a go at wrapping some interior parts with Carbon Di-Noc Vinyl. Not the best of jobs but it will do for now...

Really happy with the front end now. Just need to sort the centre section of the splitter out...
Big thanks to Greeners for supply and fit of the carbon grill :happy2:

Cheers bud. And you :drinking:
Oh and if you decide you wanna get rid of your CF rear badge, first dibs please
-
Hi mate, Was good to convoy with you, sorry didn't get much of a chance to chat to you, wanted to ask all about your car as it looked fantastic.
Is the rear badge a carbon fibre one too? Where did you get it as it looked really good.
-
Hi Al, convoy was good, I kept lookiang at your car in my rear view mirror, you had your xenons on and it looked the biz! TBH, my girlfriend kept complaining about the cold weather so I spent a alot of time in the car! :signLOL:
The rear badge is off ebay, it's real carbon fibre but a 'sticker'. I had white worm on mine so I needed to do something about it!
Here's a link: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220678956955
Hopefully, we'll get a chance to catch up on the next meet :happy2:
-
Thanks mate, Is your rear badge a 2 piece one? Any ide if this one would fit ok over a 2 piece one?
Thanks for the compliments, Still got a lot that I want to do to the car.
Still need to order a front splitter like yours too, but undecided if prefer the votex one.
Need to wrap up warmer next time. I was frozen up on the stand as well.
-
Mine is a one piece badge but as far as I'm aware it was made for a two piece badge as it's from America and I'm pretty sure they didnt have the one piece badge like our early models.
I've still got loads I want to do to mine too
For me, it an OSIR front lip was the only choice. I really like it, however the Votex is a good choice :happy2:
-
Well, after finally finding a new job I continued to slide down the slippery slope of modding
I've had a custom downpipe fitted by Torqueflow (sorry no pics) who are local to me. They did a great job and are extremely friendly and genuine people who are perfectionists!
Next up was something I've wanted ever since buying the car - a Forge TwinTake
Some eye candy:

I fitted the TwinTake myself. Much easier than I first imagined it would be. Although removing the plastic hose from the turbo inlet was a major pain in the b@llb@gs!
I'm not sure what to do next. I've been wanting new wheels but might put it off until the Summer. SWMBO is not happy with me spending more money on the car than her! :fighting:
I'm still at stage 1 re-map, considering going up to stage 2 or 2+. What do you guys think? It's my only car and a daily driver so not sure where to go from here
-
Looks brilliant mate :happy2: Are you happy with how it sounds and all that?
-
Looks brilliant mate :happy2: Are you happy with how it sounds and all that?
Thanks Keano :drinking: TBH, I haven't really 'tested' it out properly due to adverse weather conditions! :signLOL: I'll bring you an update soon :driver:
When giving it a few revs, it sounded very similar to the BMC CDA intake I had on my LCR.
-
The first thing I would do is stick it on the rollers and see what the power and torque are like.
Second, are you going to do anything about that headunit?
Otherwise there's no reason why you can't leave it as it is and then save up for some more mods.
-
Torqueflow (sorry no pics) who are local to me...
Mate, just looked up where they are based. If they're local to you, you must be local to me! Where are you based in Brum? Not seen your car around here!
-
.
Hail Red Brother! This car is looking really good :notworthy:. I think those wheels particularly suit it with the other body mods you have done.
Revo Stage2 will give you a difference, but I'd think hard before considering 2+.
What suspension mods do you have? Ant-roll bars?
-
in for more pics and details.... wanna know what you think of the twintake as thats high on my list lol!

:stupid:
I remember seeing it then. I was stuck behind it for most of the way.
Not seen it since!

Thanks for the comments guys. Always happy to hear comments from people who know more than me :happy2:

where would you suggest I get it done? Is there anywhere reputable in Birmingham/Midlands?
Second, are you going to do anything about that headunit?
Lol. I would love to upgrade to RNS510 but can't justify the cost
Otherwise there's no reason why you can't leave it as it is and then save up for some more mods.
this I will do until I figure out what's next!

Thanks Red. I do like the wheels but they are 19s and quite heavy too which is why I'm thinking of changing them.
I have Koni coilovers, no ARBs. In fact, the coilovers are my only suspension mod come to think of it.
I wouldn't go any further than Stage 2+. Are you at stage 2? If so, how would you describe the difference from stage 1 and would you ever go to stage 2+?

Thanks Matsu.
Can't really comment on the Twintake just yet, will do once I've given it a thorough going over :signLOL: What I will say is, the build quality is second to none :happy2:
Not sure what pics I can put up apart from the ones already on here
Big Al, I've replied to your PM :happy2:

....You'll feel a big difference if you go for lightweight wheels.
Yes I'm at Stage2 and would describe the difference as more even and stronger at the upper end - Acceleration from 85 upwards to about 120 is surprising. But it's not as dramatic as when you first experience the difference between Stage1 and standard.
Personally I'm not inclined to go to Stage2+ because I simply don't feel the need for more power and there's no doubt that more demands would be placed on the engine - It'll take it but I prefer some headroom. I'm not recommending people against Stage2+ but only saying it's not for me.
-
I dunno about many RR around here - I travel to JKM in portsmouth! :stupid:
I'm sure Jody at Midland VW in Cannock has a RR. Not sure about other places.
Am based near Heartlands Hospital. I use the shell garage on Station Rd!
-
@ Red Robin, thanks for the info. I think I will go for some lightweight wheels next and upgrade to stage 2. I reckon that should be more than enough for a daily driver  And also, consider some handling mods
@ Stealthwolf, I know exactly where the Heartlands Hospital is. In fact, I'm staying in Small Heath right now with my mum who is unwel. I normally fill up at Shell Acocks Green. Isn't the Station Road one closed due to renovation? Can't believe you live so close, yet I haven't seen your car around
-
The Station Rd one was closed but I went last week and it's been renovated. Love the new pumps - no more cutting out from too much pressure, and fuel flows at a higher rate.
Sorry to hear about your mum and hope she gets better soon!
-

....The most practical lightweight wheel options for a road car are Team Dynamics (~9kg each) or OZ such as Alleggerita's (~8kg). The OZ are more expensive but imo more stylish though the latest TD's are an improvement. For comparison, the Monza 18's weigh ~12kg each without tyres.
A lot of folks seem to overlook handling mods but personally it's where you can have most fun when the car is well planted, especially with the UK's national speed limit :sad1:

Thanks Stealth. She's a lot better now :happy2: Yeah the new pumps are great, used the one near Broad St a few times. Looks much better too.

OZ alloys are out of my league I'm afraid :sad1: Plus, I've been comparing our cars and it seems like I'm copying yours! (Not on purpose mind you! :P) We both have a 5dr Red GTI DSG, R32 rear end, OSIR front spoiler, TwinTake etc etc etc
Completely agree with you about the handling mods. Which handling mods would you recommend and in which order?
-

....Any similarity between our cars I see as just two people who both have excellent taste!
Handling mods? - Hmm, depends on how much you want to spend and how you use your car. Anti-roll bars are a good start, especially if used with KoniFSD dampers and the appropriate springs for them. The FSD's don't lower the car much but they are S.M.A.R.T. and automatically adjust so they're either slightly stiffer or slightly more comfy but according to road surface conditions. I had a very early set which failed but Koni have revised their design.
Sy would argue that ARB's don't help you corner any faster and he may be right, but you sure do feel better planted and hence more confident.
Stiffer but lowering springs are popular. Coilovers such as KW or Bilstein are excellent for harder driving and trackday use but come at a cost similar to OZ alloys. WALK helps too. There are plenty of discussion threads here about various solutions.
I'd advise thinking ahead as far as possible about what you want to achieve - There isn't a duty to do hardcore mods on this forum! Suspension is a whole package and a sum of its components. Proper alignment and setup also play an important part.
The downside of remapping is that the extra performance highlights where else you can modify. Once you have suspension mods you realise that some extra braking power may come in useful - Slow in, fast out of corners/roundabouts. You know the saying: It's a very slippery slope!
-
.
Btw, you don't want to go too low on your suspension while you have that OSIR front splitter. On well setup KW-V3 coilovers I can't go up or down the ramps in most indoor carparks and I have to slow to about 3mph for most speed bumps. Country lanes with a central ridge are also out of bounds. I have no regrets though and could always reset the coilovers higher but it would compromise that planted feel I so enjoy.
I'm posting a pic in your build thread just to illustrate what I'm talking about:
[Although TC will say I'm just the worst picture whore ]

^^^^^^^
Great pics RR, no need to apologise. I have the same problem getting off my drive! Need to take it off at an angle using mine and my neighbours lowered pavements  I try my best to avoid speed bumps but not always possible.
I actually have Koni coilovers, not the FSDs and currently as low as I dare go.
These:
http://motorsportworld.co.uk/framefix.asp?PID=861457&ProductCode=K-1150-5080
I don't really wish to go hardcore, I'd be mire than happy with a fast road car that has decent power, handles well, looks and sounds good. So not much then
Not going to be taking it on track. If I change my mind later on, I'll up the ante but doubt it.
Hmmm... ARBs have got me thinking now
-
Yeah the new pumps are great, used the one near Broad St a few times. Looks much better too.
That's where I've been going since the renovations started at Station Rd!
As for handling, WALK and ARBs would be on my list.
-

Stealth, do you have any handling mods on your car?
-
Those are the mods most people seem to recommend for handling (along with brake upgrade). There's been some discussion over the usefulness of ARBs on normal road use.
Have a read on some of the reviews to get an idea of some of these mods.
-
in for more pics and details.... wanna know what you think of the twintake as thats high on my list lol!
nice looking car!!#
matsu
Matsu, took the car for a short but spirited drive today to test out the Twintake and downpipe. As you know I fitted them both in a very short space of time so cant really comment on either individually. Indeed, I can feel the car is driving better as in the power delivery is smoother and stronger. I have no doubt both mods have added a few extra Ponies under the hood
The Twintake itself is not quiet but also not too loud. Almost perfect I think. Sounds a little like Darth Vader has found a new abode under my bonnet   Plus the DSG blurp is now louder :jumpmove:
I know you have been thinking about this mod for a while, my advice would be to go for it! Also, the DP has certainly made my exhaust louder too and acceleration has improved.
I definitely need to get it on a Rolling Road just to see what my car is pushing :pomppomp:
-
i,m def going for the dv(as already got that) got twintake on promise and now found arbs to add so will get the superpro caster kit to do at same time.
think the DP will have to wait till near summer and i think stage2 will be done at same time.
2011 has become more expensive than i planned and its.....oh sh*t the 1st of the year lol
thanks for the feedback woohooo i,m on that slope again

Just a quick update guys. Finally got my R20 brakes on. The garage that did it had no problems at all. I used Castrol SRF too. All in all, these have already made a huge difference. Using OEM discs and pads. Sorry for the poor quality pics and dirt. Will get some decent ones up soon :happy2:

I've notice most people have the cover paited the same colour as thier car but I didn't fancy having a red engine cover! Went for grey as it looks very OEM but loads better IMO
Opinions welcome :happy2:
-
^^^^
Very very very smart engine cover indeed! :notworthy:
I would have done the same as I also think it would be OTT to have a red engine cover on a red car. I've seen pics of yankee ones
I love the subtlety of the grey as opposed to silver (silver good on a silver car). That grey would also look good on a Steel Grey car. Out of interest what paint is that 'silver grey' you've used?
Nice touch having the red around the VW logo :notworthy:
Seriously good, mate :drinking:
Btw, now you need some black anodised bottle caps like mine (JAP, from U S of A) - Those bright blue oem ones now stick out like a sore thumb.
-
Thanks Red. Your comments are very much appreciated :happy2: I totally agree with you. Think on Al's car the silver works very well. The paint was actually mixed so no paint code as such. I told the guy I wanted a nice matt grey but not too dark. Also, the centre black section I asked for gloss which he did but he also made it metallic with flakes in it :stupid: But you can only see it in direct sunlight (Which for us is never!) so I didn't mind
Do you have a link for the bottle caps? They would really tidy up the engine bay.

....I thought you might ask me that! I was going to post a link anyway but had to go out.

^ Really helpful guy called Jay and good service. I can't find these products on his site but drop him an email.

^ Not cheap (I forget how much) but good quality - I sold my screenwash cap to someone on this forum when I got the Forge catch tank which replaces it - He was well pleased.

Looking nice there dude. Love the new engine cover, do occasionally think of going for a darker chrome type look on mine and that looks cool as hell!
Also cheers to Robin for putting up those parts, Don't really blow me away in appearence, but do look much better than the standard colour.
Would like one of the Audi metal caps to compliment my own Oil cap, but not at £50, so maybe those it is for me too!
-
Thanks Al. I like your cover. Goes nicely with your silver car :happy2: Yep, the R8 bits are too expensive for what they are. I might get these soon too. Look much better than the blue. Thanks for the link RR
-
Engine cover looks the shizz! :notworthy:
Where did you get the brakes done in the end?
-
Thanks Nath. Brakes were done by a chap called Jason, he owns RJ Performance which is in Bordesley Green. Great lad who knows his stuff. Usually works with Jap cars though. I did speak to City Fleet but unfortunately for me they are only open when I'm at work
-
Lookin' good. Have you bedded in the brakes yet? what do you think of them?
Lovin' the engine cover - gloss black seems to work so well. Who did you get to do yours?
-
Thanks Stealth. Brakes are still bedding in but already much better and sharper than the GTI brakes even when cold. The engine cover was painted by 1st choice body repairs in Tyseley. Only went there because it was local and I didn't think anyone could get an engine cover wrong :signLOL: But he's done a good job.
-
Finally got some new alloys on courtesy of T88OMM. 18" Speedline Turinis powder coated in anthracite. Silver wasn't doing it for me
Also, thanks to Matsu, the centre section of the OSIR splitter is sorted too. Carbon water transfer.

This thread is a perfect example of how a set of wheels can make or break a car, the Speedlines like absolutely spot on, money well spent :happy2:

Looks spot on bud really nice golf... :happy2: im local to mij, im thinking about having one of there exhausts fitted to my edition 30, how does it sound..?

Looks spot on bud really nice golf... :happy2: im local to mij, im thinking about having one of there exhausts fitted to my edition 30, how does it sound..?
Sounds really good actually. No exhaust drone on motorway and not loud... Until the pedal decides to hit the metal... All on it's own!!!! Then it has a nice deep roar.
Thanks for all the comments guys. Really happy with them. :happy2:

Loving the wheels. :notworthy:
-
Love it! :happy2:
-
.
I'm loving it too. But I would say that - The wheel colour is similar to my own :happy2:
-
Turinis! Good choice
Look superb in a darker colour.
Bounces off the red in all the right ways :happy2:
-
Thanks for all the kind words guys. Can't believe it's taken me this long, wheels were actually second on my list after coilovers!
.
I'm loving it too. But I would say that - The wheel colour is similar to my own :happy2:
Sort of uncanny how similar our cars are  Think my subconscious took inspiration from your car
