At the end of the year the ED30 will be going as I fancy a change. Problem is that I cant decide whats next :stupid: Budget is £22-25k
I dont need a 4 seater, The family car is a BMW 335d so that covers the practical side of things. I also plan on getting a new premises next year that is just a 10 min walk away from home so I dont paticularly need anything fo commuting either so I want an all out drivers car that is also relatively 'sensible'
We do a huge amount of work on the Noble M12 and I am yet to drive a better all round package that the GTO 3R M12, but its a little 'special' looking for parking on the drive at home. So far I have thought of:
BMW Z4M 3.2 Coupe (same engine as M3 but no auto box available)
Merc SL55 AMG 5.5l roadster (auto box available and sounds  )
Porsche Boxter (nice all round package but I will be called the cockster by mates for the duration of ownership)
Mk2 Audi TT of some type
Any suggestions?

awesome car :driver: had the pleasure of driving one :driver:

if its not got to be iused for comuting or family, then this is the one time in your life you could get away with caterhams, lotus's etc
what about this, and its one of the more expensive ones, by about 6-8k as well

-
22000 Austin Allegro's!!!!
-
I have driven most caterhams, westfields and an aerial atom. If I was going for this type of car I would get the noble. Our turbo conversions take these to 450-500 bhp with exhaust, 2x GT28 hybrids and an intercooler but I want something a little more practical ideally.
-
i had the E46 m3 and a mate of mine had the z4m coupe there was nothing in them i prefer the m3 as performance is so simelar and the practicality of the m3 just wins all the time (one day you will want the Z4M to do more practicality wise and it wont beable too, this happend to my pal and he ended up punting it. he never had the advantage of a second car though)
CSLs are coming in to this price range too, also you will get a good M5 for that sort of money too, 24 k will get ya an 05 plate 30-40 k er, a little remap and, 200+mph :stupid:
Ill be going back to BMWs M division next, still loving the golf though!

elise/exige with VAG 1.8T or honda type r engine

19k would get you a TVR 350 way cooler than a noble IMO

The engine/suspension/brakes/radiator etc... have only covered 14,000 miles. If your buying your TVR to drive, then I honestly don't see a more sorted T350 forsale at the moment.

Can't really help you decide, but whats the 335d like compared to the Ed30 in straight line speed?
Been thinking of getting a touring one of these or a 335i next.

I do a lot of work on TVR's and would never own one, badly build, not as good to drive as you would think.
My dream car as a teenager was a Cerbera, then I had one in for some work about 4 years ago, and got to keep it for a few days, most dissapointing car I have ever driven and I sulked for about a week :sad1:
M3 CSL is a nice option and one I will consider and always liked them, plus they come with an auto SMG option. I need to drive an SLK 550 AMG to make my mind up, the sond alone will keep me entertained for a while.
As for the 335d, I love it. Not as 'racy' as the ED30 and not as quick to 70mph but trounces it to 100mph. Plus I get 40MPG and lots of RWD sideways fun. uper comfy and quiet as well. They need to put this engine into the 1 series coupe! The 335i is also good, breat when mapped but lacks the pure power and torque of the 335d.

Are you talking std vs std or mapped Ed30 vs Std etc??
-
I have driven a standard 335d and it was ok but nowhere near as quick as my old remapped ed 30  Remap that though ... and post on Pistonheads - they love them remapped .....
I had a Z4M Roadster to replace my Superchips remapped Ed 30 DSG and regretted it hugely ..... I now have a 320d auto and am enjoying that more than the Z4M !!! The gearbox on the Z4M is rubbish and though the engine is superb ... in real world driving once moving the Ed30 remapped is a beast  I miss it - do not sell it !!

Sorry, should have made that a bit clearer. My ED30 is on revo stage 2+ making 369bhp and 370 ft/lb. My 335d is mapped by myself and making 348bhp and 590 ft/lb.

Keep the Ed30..
-
I might swap the ED30 for the 335d for a week (the mrs usually has the 335d) and test drive a few other things before getting back into the ED30, I may be pleasantly suprised and decide to keep it. I think I just want a true RWD sports car.

Interesting that you say that Dave, as I would have thought a Stage 2+ DSG ED30 would be ahead till way past 70 (like 120 at least) against a mapped 335d. I know a lad who is a regular at Pod (and can drive ) with a DMS mapped 335d and his times were similar to mine at Stage 1/2, but terminal speeds on his were a few mph down suggesting that the RWD grip gives it the edge of the line, but once rolling the ED30 has it by a small margain. Stage 2+ I would expect it to be even more of a gap. Sure the 335d would go past eventually with that torque, but i'd be amazed if it was anywhere near yours at 70mph..

That's right mate. Was running 13.2-13.3's consistantly, then chucked the rear seats out, lobbed some 888's on some 17's and put them on the back and got a 13.0. His terminals were around the 105-106mph mark. So a fair bit slower than a S2+ K04, but bloody impressive for a soot chucker.. :happy2:

Yeah deffo impressive for a soot chucker, can remember him beating loads of cars down the strip and everyone being surprised.
We used to have major arguments over what was faster, 335d or 2.0TFSI K04 LOL
-
great engine, only prob i found was mpg was same (ish) as a modern hot hatch (27-33), so whats the point? as you dont get the benefit of mpg but the dull feel of a diesel  torque is awsome mind. was a 5 series i was in so in a lighter 3 the mpg may be better?
-
edit, i just checked evo and they say combined mpg on 535 is 42 :surprised: i had one for a week when they came out and was getting same mpg as my cupra r that i had at time (engine may have changed since then), sorry to hijack thread and argue with myself :signLOL: on topic: csl for me, i think i would marry it :signLOL:

Tuned K04 vs standard 335d :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NKgnYUVL7Q
I get an average MPG of 39 from the BMW and can manage 47mpg on a run if kept an around 70mph and a range of 650+ miles to a full tank. As a standard package its brilliant, with a good map it is capable of destroying most hothatches inc some fast saloons (fair bit quicker than a mates Subaru STi) and wen driven correctly it will outhandle most things (had a play with a new megane 250bhp sport the other day) and for a diesel it sounds brilliant, flappy paddles add to the fun factor as does the 2 stage traction control.

AMG Merc all the way.
Those engine's just sound

not sure it will "outhandle most things" mate, but yeah i agree, great package :happy2: would love one for family stuff.
