I have a standard GTI 56 plate with 39k on the clock. This month it's is due for it's annual service. I called the stealer today to get some costs. For a standard service they are charing £229, which on the face of it isn't tooooo bad !
However ........the stealer did point out to me that as the car will be 4 years old in Nov10 it's due to have it's cambelt and tensioner changed....(news to me). For the pleasure of this they would like to relieve me of £299. So with a service and the Cambelt sorted, they want to charge me £528..... OMG.....They then stated that I should think about getting my brake fluid and air con units checked out....at this time I was on the floor laughing so much I told the girl at the stealers not to bother giving me any more prices, as I will need to remortage my house to afford this........She didn't see the funny side of it...... :P
Does anyone know if the Cambelt and tensioner needs to be checked out and at what intervals????? I can't believe that they want to charge £299 for this....... !

use search, there are a lot of threads on 4th year servicing costs mate. 4 years is the time the cambelt is due to be done. brake fluid every 2 years, a/c (not sure but similar officially).

I have the same issue buddy. And the costs and intervals are correct too.
Infact. I went to a local independant garage and they quoted me £450 + for just the cambelt changing

Cambelt needs to be changed every 4 years and depending on your brochure somewhere between 60-100k miles (So a nice round 80k)
At the end of the day it is your choice BUT look at it this way Pay £300 now or take the risk, Your cambelt goes at motorway speed, you need £6k for a new engine.
I had my cambelt done on my vRS just short of 3 years old with 51k miles on the clock. Purely because im at Stage 2+ and didnt want to take the risk.
Personally i would just get it done for piece of mind :happy2:

£300 for a cambelt change at a main dealer is a great price actually , Ive seen them charge closer to £600 for this job in certain parts of the country. Get a new water pump fitted (I assume its cambelt driven on the 2.0 TFSI - Ive yet to pick my GTI up so Im still unsure of some of the tech) for peace of mind also.

........it is mate. There is also a small cam chain which can somtimes get slack & rattle (mine did )& was replaced.

I have got to agree that £299 is a good price for a cambelt change, and i would get it done for peace of mind. on the servicing side of things, VW are doing an offer you pay £299 for 2 years servicing and 2 MOT's which is a great offer.

my 57 plate will be three very soon only done 13k only do about 7 a year i dont fancy changing cam belt next year with mabey 20 k on clock or should i :surprised:

Yes as the belt is rubber and over time it starts to Perish. Just my opinion :happy2:

Thanks for all the advice here...much appreciated. I've booked the car in for the service and the cambelt change at the cost of £528 for the whole thing.I'll also ask about the £299 deal for 2 years servicing and MOT's, as that sounds like good value. I had the air con and brake fluid changed last year, so I have another year before I need to look at them again......As most of you have said, it's just not worth taking the risk with the cambelt and I'm keen to keep the service book upto date with full VW service history. Even tho it smarts a bit now, it will give me piece of mind.....

I rang my local VW dealer to take up the above servicing offer, which after a lot of ummming and aghhhing they agreed they could do. There was me thinking i could just book my car in and pay them the £299 when i picked car up, never that easy, they took all my details and payment and said someone will contact me within 4 weeks to confirm the offer and i could then ring to get a date to service my car... what a parlava!!!!

I can't believe that ! I though that all VW dealers had to offer the same deals......? I'm booked in with VW Kettering and they had no issues with the costs quoted as they are on the VW web page, also I beat them up a bit on intalling a new water pump for me..they were fine, and happy to quote me the prices on the VW web page...

just had my gti 06 serviced 4th year . had service , b/fluid , cambelt and water pump done . £640 . cars only done
14000 so not to happy with having the belt and water pump done but better save than sorry .
any way its only every 4 years

Make sure you get the water pump done also. Its worth doing at this time and its much easier for the tech to change it when doing the cam belt.

Just had mine serviced at 3 years and 27k. Had a full service as I have not long had the car and at £229 why not. MOT £30 and brake fluid £50. A/Con valve was replaced under warranty which meant I also got regas. Had one new Monza 2, A new steering rack, 4 wheel alignment and new cat converter under warranty.
Was kept updated regularly and reassured that items where replaced despite the car running / driving okay.

I feel your pain! Just had my 40k/4yr service last month and was surprised to hear about the cam belt change. I rang round a few garages and one said they would check the belt & replace if necessary, another told me I have a chain and not a belt :scared: and 2x others said it would need changed. I went ahead and got the work done as it sounded too risky not to even though all of my previous cars were good for ~80k.
Just be thankful your's isn't DSG as it needed done also @ £150 :jumping:

Definatley needs changing. Not worth the risk. Its a rubber belt after all.

Sorry missed that off, I'm also having the water pump replaced. VW originally wanted £100 for this ,but I pushed them down to £50, as they already had access to change it........Without discussion on this forum I'd have missed that, so :drinking: to a a great site !
