Hi everyone
I've just got a quote for painting my side skirts and rear valance on my GTI... I'm definitely going with the painted rear valance but what are your opinions on painted side skirts on GTIs?
I was thinking about perhaps just leaving them, was wondering what people think looks better...
Cheers
-
Painted rear only for me, but as they say its all a matter of choice......
-
painting them what colour?
-
Black (i.e body coloured)
-
mine are colour coded on mine as standard, what do yours look like now then? (this is where i dont know enuff about the gti )
-
On a black car it will probably be ok to leave the skirts as the black bumper plastic, whereas with mine its either everything done, or none done! But I still think that on any colour it looks the best if everything was colour-coded.
-
if your doing the back, i would do the sides
-
I think it depends on the colour of car, but as yours is black you could get away with jus the back, as candy said with CW i think its all or nothing but etto
-
....
Personally I think the GTI looks much better with colour coded skirts etc, but it's slightly colour sensitive. I've never liked the deep black plastic Ka-style rear on the GTI.
The Ed30 (and R32) looks much better imo.
The problem is that if you do one, you end up doing front, back, and sides!
Welcome to the forum!! You have been warned about the slippery slope! : -

Yep, id say get the lot done too
-
Do the lot, including the front.
There's a natural line that runs through the car's side on a rake, if you look. Anything other than full coding breaks this up and looks messy IMO.
I think it also depends on colour.
White/red/silver contrast nicely with the black and look better.. Others like blue/black look much better fully coded.
-
after some google images research i have to agree with the guys above :happy2:
get the colour on!
-
I will echo evrybody else's thoughts, the whole lot has to be done. If you just do the back the rest of the car will look mismatched :happy2:
-
whole lot defo, thats why i waited to fit any bits wanted it all CC
-
Ok cool, seems the general opinion is that my original plan of painting the sides and rear is a goodun!
I did ask the bodyshop about painting the front splitter / lip too but he said it wasn't worth it... I'm thinking I should just tell him I want that bit done too now... can't be too much extra seeing as it seems the smallest bit ever!
And before all of this, I thought about getting a Rieger front splitter... but that's too expensive... and the Votex splitter... is that any different at all from standard? Doesn't look it...
-
most bodyshops have to mix a minimum amount of paint to do any job, usually about £40.00 worth
if its in the pot and you're paying for it then get the paint put where you want it
-
Get it all done :happy2:
-
Do you mind if I ask how much the colour coding is going to sting you?
-
I've got a quote for £260 for the rear valance and the sides... not too bad I didn't think...

Thats very good.
Is that just painting over the bobbled texture, or will it smooth it out as well?
-
Yep - includes smoothing of the bobbly bits first!
-
Thats a good price for smoothing and painting!
Where about are you located?
Im looking for teh same but not having much joy! Im based in South West (bath)
-
Yep - includes smoothing of the bobbly bits first!
Very good price. Take it!!!!
-
I've been thinking on this for a while now,if I go ahead I,m only having the back done and then only the upper half of the rear.(If you get me).
Reason.
I have Pescaras on,I like em but dont wanna be an ED30 lookalike by having all the skirts done.
-
Yeah - that's what I'm going for - the rear valance will only be painted above the groove bit... think it'll good great (hopefully!)
prepree - I'm in Newbury, but the bodyshop I'm going to is near Basingstoke... quite far for you to go! But good luck in finding a good place - I'm lucky that the bodyshop I'm going to is well known round here for being excellent, but fairly priced!
-
yeah that is a bit of a mini mission, il be interested to see the results tho, it may warranty the road trip (like we need an excuse to drive a long way!!) especially as the price is so good!
-
Yeah! Will let you know the results! :happy2:
-
I would get it all colour coded looks so much better .as your going to the effort of doing the bumper shame not to go all the way.
-
Mike, my dad got a new mk5 on Monday and asked me where my old boot liner was today
-
always wondered why VW never had these colour coded as standard
