Hello peeps,
Bought a 57 plate metallic black ED 30 this weekend. It is an import from the EU so only paid trade price for it as I know that, if I was unfortunate to make a claim for the PAV through the insurer, they would only offer me trade money for it (yet most insurers want to have their cake and eat it by charging a higher premium for the import!)
I have read some threads on here to gleen some info but still would like the following clarified if possible -
1.) As I live in West Lancs who is the best independent specialist to take the car too - Awesome Gti in Manc or there is PipeWerx just down the road from me - anyone got any feedback? Anyone else in Lancs/Merseyside/gtr Manc?
2.) Are the standard speed rated tyres W or Y as mine has one rating on the front and one on the back, although am sure both ratings are adequate.
3.) As my car is an import is it a complete waste of time writing to VW re a numbler plaque as these are for the UK cars only?
4.) What are peoples views on tyres re best all rounder for ED 30 - Michelin PS, Vredestein, Goodyear or AN Other? PS I usually only travel on A/B roads not much motorway travel and not taking it on a track.
5.) Does the timing belt have to be renewed after 60,000/4 yrs also does the fuel filter needs changing? I see in another thread someones DV was shot - should these also be changed after a certain mileage to preserve performance?
6.) Is there a local club meet up for MK5 Gti owners/Ed 30 owners?
7.) Not really tested the stereo as of yet, is the OEM one suitable for electronic music/rumbling bass or will I have to upgrade the ICE? Not planning on cruising round McDonalds but I do like my choons!
8.) Does 98 RON provide better MPG as well as better performance over MPG? Not got a Shell near me for V Power so does anyone have any comments on BP Ultimate unleaded?
I think that just about does it for now but know I have missed off a fair few others!
Many thanks for any help re the above.

Hi mate - welcome & nice choice of car :)
I don't have answers to all your questions but will help on the ones I can.
2) I believe from the factory they have W rated tyres.
4) Falken FK452, Toyo T1-R, Goodyear Eagle F1 are all alternatives, however the Vredsteins & Michelin PS's get good feedback on here.
5) Yes for the belt, also the water pump whilst your at it (dealer will do this extra for just the water pump part cost only not labour when doing a cam belt & tensioner change). And yes I would change the fuel filter every 40k at the very least. It's a very easy job on these cars - part number for fuel filter is 1K0 201 051 C
The DV is basically a precautionary change, it's worth just buying the latest revision 'D' valve part number is 06H 145 710 D
7) No way! Not many people tend to care much for the ICE, but for me it was the first priority! The stock HU is pants, a lot of people tend to upgrade to the RNS510 which is a factory fit, touch screen factory look stereo with sat-nav built in, looks great, but the sound quality is debatable, as the amp isn't a great deal better than the other stock stereos - subjective as is all ICE opinions.
I swapped my stock HU out for an Alpine CDE-114BTi - this offers bluetooth calling handsfree syncing of a phonebook, voice dialing etc, it's easy to wire in, and if you buy a CAN-BUS adaptor, you can use your existing steering wheel stereo controls (if you have MFSW) to control the HU too. The sound quality is good even with stock speakers, although I personally bought a small Alpine AMP/SUB combo to put in the boot. The HU was about £170, Can-Adaptor around £35 & Sub around £130.
The sound is FAR far better than it was, but I think the other speakers will need replacing to something half decent, even a decent set of Pioneers or JBL's would be a major improvement.
Of course you could fit the RNS510 and then amp it up, which would give you the best of both worlds.
But if you plan on using a handsfree phone, you've then got to shell out for a VW Bluetooth install or Parrot kit which is more £££ on top.
I will 100% say, that if you buy an aftermarket stereo, buy the original VW fascia panel to allow single DIN stereos, it gives you a storage tray underneath, it absolutely does NOT look as good as a factory fit stereo like the RNS510, however the cost difference and sound improvement outweigh this... In my view.
8 ) Best to use Tesco 99 or Optimax, others im sure are fine, but it tends to be the BP & other SUL fuel are more expensive.
Any other questions mate feel free, we are a helpful bunch on this forum :)

cheers bud, some useful info will have to consider my options re ICE as want it to look original but feel an Alpine or VDO Dayton upgrade would do the business.

Hi Mate,
To answer your Q's
1) Awesome GTi are quite highly rated amongst people from your neck of the woods (im originally from Wigan myself )
2) As long as the Tyres are rated 150Mph or over you will be fine. Both W or Y rating is fine
3) Not sure as im in a Skoda vRS so will have to clarify with a VW owner.
4) I've used Eagle F1, Vred Sessanta, Avon ZZ3 and currently have PS3 which are THE best tyre i've had. I don't track the car either
5) Every 4 years is correct Mileage varies depending on your book. For Peace of mind i would get it done. Look at it this way pay £300 now or £6k for a new engine if it goes when your pressing on. DV just replace for the OEM D Revision and all will be fine. :happy2:
6) There is a meet 1st Sun of every month at the Stretton Fox pub just off Jct 10 of the M56. Started off with Briskoda but all sorts turn up now. I've been to a few and Pete the guy that organises them is a nice chap.
7) I had a Stream MP3 (Same as standard in GTi) and when i replaced with the MFD3 i was massively impressed with the difference. Im no audiophile either. Main thing that lets the Stereo down are the front speakers judging by most peoples opinions.
8 ) i find i get around 2-3mpg on V-Power. I have used BP Ultimate but my car didn't seem to like it. Other peoples do.

I too am based in the North West and drive an Edition 30, maybe we should do a mini meet, get a few of us together for a chat, and compare cars, issues and ideas.

cheers - kiwi yeah sounds like a good idea, will get back to you re when/where
vrs - as my car was registered in Jan 2008 will it already have the latest DV as you can only get the ED 30 up to an 08 plate cant you?
Will stick with Michelin although i bet the price is eye watering.
Which are the best performing spark plugs?
Re Oil bought some Castrol Edge as people seemed to be split between this and Mobil 1.

What is the build date though. I would be surprised if it had the revision D valve but i can't remember when it was released :happy2:

Mine is a may 08 car and still had the old diaphragm type. :happy2:
-
1). Votex in Congleton (Cheshire) are good.
-
ok, looks like a revision d is needed. Is it something i should change straight away or will i be ok on the old one until a certain mileage? The car has done 20k.
Thanks for the heads up re Congleton specialist also.

Do it whenever you can. Stops you getting the feeling something major is wrong with the car and it's underpowered when its a £50 part and 15 mins of your time to fit :happy2:
-
You have a Ed 30 its easy to take it off and check it for tares or small holes, you don't need to change it until it breaks, if it was located were the the KO 3 one is then i would say change it but it's a ten minute job on the KO 4. :happy2:
-
Just spunked £50 on replacing mine today. Felt a tit after realising the original DV was in perfect condition
-
Yeah but you have peace of mind now that this one won't go :happy2:

There is nothing wrong in replacing them, i changed mine out after being told by 2 reputable tuners that i had a slight leak, and mine turned out to be perfectly fine. Its just on the Eddie, it is very accessible so if i felt the power was down then i would have look at first. :happy2:

that makes me feel a little better
