Title: My poor bumper!
Post by: mackit on September 09, 2010, 02:34:52 pm
Oh man...so angry.  Not 100% sure where it happened but some absolute idiot banged into my ED30 on Tuesday.  Walking back to the car i noticed that the rear bumper had been damaged as it was sticking out.  Either while reversing (more likely) or pulling into a car parking space next to mine some tonk has hit the lower, passenger side of the rear bumper just behind the wheel.  Will upload a photo soon.

The bumper is caved in quite a bit and has popped out off the wheel arch.

To make things even worse the scum that did it simply drove off and left no details!!!   :fighting: :fighting:

Been to my local VW bodyshop and they have said new bumper, new splash guards, etc. and comes out at £1700!!!  Naturally, i am going to have to claim on my insurance at that price and my excess is £250.

I have no claims protection but naturally i would prefer to not have to make a claim.   £250 is not the end of the world but i really shouldn't be paying anything if someone had been an honest person.

I can't believe some people.....i can only assume they had no insurance.

If my insurance provider approves the work then it will be in on Sept 28th for a new rear bumper.  In the bodyshop for maybe 3 weeks i was told... :surprised:

Gutted!!   :sad1:

I think pics are the order of the day......

Is your existing rear bumper totally goosed? Body shops try it on all the time they without shame will replace out good parts when a simple fix is all thats required, particularly where insurance companies are involved.  The most unscrupulous will also re-use existing parts and claim back the cost of new ones from the insurance companies.

It may be worth posting some pics and perhaps getting a local paint shop to see if they can affect a repair for much less and also avoiding going through your insurance, cos this will be considered a fault claim and will pump up your next years premiums.

I'll try and get some pictures up.  To be honest, when i first saw it i thought it might be a repair job however when i looked at it more with the VW bodyshop gu,  there is no way that a bodyshop could repair it.  It is beyond a dent and as the plastic has been warped and bent around 1-2 inches out of place from the arch i think it would be beyond moulding it back into form.

So annoying as you have to replace the whole damn thing even though 80% of the bumper is pristine!!!

Oofftt, that sucks mate. At least the only good thing i suppose is that you can claim it on insurance and it won't affect your no claims.

Ok. From those pics it us surely only the top half if the bumper that needs replacing? That is the same part as a standard gti whereas the lower is the expensive ed30 bit.

I'd get prices for that part, circa £70-100 at a guess even cheaper on eBay and get a good paint shop to spray and fit the parts.

Unless of course there's more damage than the pics show....

get a heat gun and take the bumper off the car a heat from behind as it will gently push it back into shape maybe  worth a go i think

Unfortunately the bottom part is bent considerably more than the top half.

As much as i wish it would I don't think a heat gun would work on this extent of damage.

Like most on here, i'm super anal about the condition of my car.  I wouldn't be happy unless it was as good as prior to the accident, which was pristine.

As much as i don't want to claim i guess that's what insurance is for.  It's a shame some people would drive off from such an incident.  If i didn't have no claims protection then i might have weighed up spending £1700 or having my insurance premium go up from £475 to around £1100.

I don't suppose anyone knows a really good body shop in Surrey that could tell me whether VW are exaggerating that a new bumper is required?

Chris.

Gutted for you !. I would ask the body shop for the parts they replace so you can be 100% sure what has been done ,then sell the lightly damaged parts on here or the bay to recover some off your excess ??

Good catch guys. Will definitely ask for the rear valance as that is untouched.
