holy sh!t, this thing shifted big style.
he said it makes slightly above 300Hp between 3.5k and 5.5k with nearly 400Ibft torque. i 100% agree. it felt massively quicker than my old stage 2+ vRS, much quicker than the 6MPS i test drove. 4th gear was absolutely savage.
As for the handling, after reading the reviews from top gear and that footage of the Vectra suffering horrendous understeer, i completely disagree. considering it was running on standard suspension it handled really well. Really surprised me, i was honestly ready to rip it.
according to the guy, the TG team disconnected fuses on the VXR to disable the traction control, but this also disabled the electronic dampers or something hence the shocking handling.
lit the inside wheel on a few corners, no doubt it would be worse in the wet, but i reckon an LSD and this car could be very good indeed. V6 turbo engine sounded very good as well. id love to try one of these with a TBE, and intercooler. it would sound ace and go like sh!t off a shovel then
but its a vauxhall, with half of halfords attached to it...............

I thought they were 4wd

insignia vxr is :happy2:
-
That's the new insignia VXR Ian. The vectra was FWD
-
definitely FWD, it'd need an LSD for any mor power id say, it was on the limit for breaking grip all the time. Could have been the tyres maybe,
power seemed to drop off early though like the MPS did though!!!! quicker to change gear at about 5.5k. strange though, the TFSi doesn't suffer that at all

You been in a k04 tfsi stage 2 plus yet?
The story I heard about the topgear press car was that it was a early prototype that they tested and not the finished product, I would doubt that they would fiddle with the cars tbh.

yeah, ive driven 4 of them now. one at stage 1, and the others at stage 2+ (APR/revo), id honstly say this wasnt too far off being as fast. especially high gear low revs pulls. definitely alot more oomph than stage 1 k04 though
Just found this review of it on evo though and they highly rated it against the evo FQ320, impreza STI and bmw 330i in their group test and that was the slower version.
http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/cargrouptests/65185/mitsubishi_evo_v_impreza_v_vectra_vxr_v_bmw_330i.html (http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/cargrouptests/65185/mitsubishi_evo_v_impreza_v_vectra_vxr_v_bmw_330i.html) apparently it surprised them quite alot.
dont think i could ever own one though.

Sorry mate but not a chance!!!! I was running against a guy off VXR online who has a 310+bhp Vectra VXR with LSD and quite a few other goodies on it @ the MLR 30-130mph day last year. My car had just TBE and Revo software at the time (so around 320bhp) and I was a good 6 seconds faster than him and also (suprisingly) had a faster top speed on the day too..
Yes they go well and can be a performance bargain, but they aint Stage 2+ pace at all (far from it). I would put them on par with a 280bhp KO4 (up to a certain speed) going off the many performance figures i've seen from them..
-
but we all know from your other posts that your car is the fastest ever, im just going off my experience of driving them. it felt quicker i know that
a stage 2 k04 isnt to far off being as quick as a stage 2+ k04 at the end of the day. id have put the performance in between a stage 1 and 2 k04
its still scrabble drive though, so id still nnot consider it anyway

Well unless my car has been sprinkled with magic performance dust by Tinkerbell when rolling off the production line in Germany, I would hazard a wild guess that it's no faster than any other Stage 1, 2, 2+ Ed30 when in it's comparitive state of tune.. In other words I was explaining my findings when putting a Stage 2 KO4 (as well as 2 other Ed30 members from this forum) against a mapped Vectra in a organised event. This was held on a closed RAF runway, using GPS Racelogic timing equipment, in a ideal test of a cars straight line (rolling) ability. So a good comparison in my eyes..
Or we could just use you butt dyno and go with that as being more OFFICIAL I suppose? :booty:
I could also mention that they are WAAAAAY of the times and terminal speeds when tested on the 1/4 mile strip against several Stage 2+ KO4 times/terminals. But I wouldn't want you to think 'I' was gloating, as I AM MR EDITION 30 and NOBODY CAN BEAT ME, EVER!!!! :P
-
  where's my fishing rod.
thing is you have no idea about that vectra either. it could have had one of these generic maps that quote big figures but never make them.
who knows.
still a vauxhall and worst of all its a vecra  i was just massively surprised by how much better it was than i had read about and expected
i think its the midrange that makes it feel so good though, as at the top as i said, power did drop off. the TFSI pulls all the way to 6500rpm

TFSI RULES!!! (or should I say my TFSI) :P :booty:
In all fairness though for a cheap family saloon with buckets of torque, the Vectra is seriously over looked..
-
Ben you got any Magic performance dust spare please?

stop driving crap cars and just buy an ed30 stop F ing about :popcornsoda:

That's some funny s..t lol

Im partial to a test pilot or two  if i buy k04 its not going to be a golf. it'd be a cupra, or S3. need to save a little more.
i need to try a stage 2 cupra with LSD i think. driven the red temptress, but the roads were sopping, and the car was squirmingall over the place trying to get grip

the red one is running a supersh1t map thats not the best and the diffs also needs changing on that car as i think its a little suspect as grips lots more than that car in the wet and in the dry and does have a diff :rolleye:

after getting out my vRS(at stage2+) into the red temptress the first thing i said to tfsi_mike was is this k03 or k04 because it really wasn't that much different. do you mean your car grips better?
-
Yeah my car grips better as I had the car for around 3 weeks so know it very well and my diff just seems to handle it better some how
-
must admit that superchips map on the temptress was pants compared to othr k04 cars ive driven
-
Had a play with one of these the other day in the S3 which is bog standard at the mo and there was a knat's dick in it! Sounded well though! :happy2:
-
They are about 100KG heavier than an S3 so with 300 horses it would sound about right being the same speed.
-

how heavy is the s3 mate :surprised:?
I thought the vectra weighed the same as a p & o ferry, at least it handles like one :signLOL:
-

could well have been either the older 252Hp or 280hp version. they are 1580kg so power to weight of 159Hp/ton and 177Hp/ton respectively as standard.
S3 weighs 1495kg with 261Hp so power to weight of 174Hp/ton so theres not much in it between them
-
they seem to map well though
this is thorney motorsports on a 280 VXR
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thorneymotorsport.co.uk%2Ftms%2Fuploads%2F1%2FVectraVXR280_Stage1.jpg&hash=29b0b12191dcff131c30ac62d137d993437b19bd)
huge midrange gains and 420Ibft isnt to be sniffed at either
strange though looking over all the VXR tuners graphs, they all peak at about 3.5-4.5k and then tail off, unlike the TFSI which peaks at about 6.5k

Well built and quattro = weight!
Done the low weight/low power car combo already = Big power/well built and comfy FTW!

thought they were much more than that, my clio was 170 per tonne! cant see how a map could make it as fast as k04 stage 2+ :signLOL: it would need another 100bhp
-
i said it wasnt too far off being as fast. and i believe without even looking back at the thread i placed the perofrmance as inbetween a stage 1 and 2 k04.
looking at that graph it echos what i felt. stage 1 k04 makes 280-300Hp at say 6k+Rpm. this is already making that at 3600rpm-6300rpm. the GTI/cupra would have the weight advantage though

Thought I would post my Vauxhall experience here instead of starting a new thread  Read on cos this guy was a nut-job.
The other day there was an old boy in his 60's telling how good his Nurburg Edition Astra was and how crap my golf was :chicken: He said that at least he had "proper-full leather " interior instead of half a job.
Having the special Edition, I asked him if he planned going to the Ring, to which he replied "don't know......maybe"
He then began to question me about the Ring, as he didn't really believe that I had been.
Then he told me that the Nurburg Astra has been round the Ring in 6mins
He asked me if I was a drug dealer, or if the car was nicked, cos it was too expensive for me. I didn't even know the guy
That was all I could take. He really didn't like the fact that I wasn't playing his game. Most of the time I was being a bit sarcastic towards him, but I didn't lose my cool.
I did remember however, to tell him that there is a great video on Youtube of a Nurburg astra. It was the car we all saw drive past on the back of a flatbed wagon
Yeah, I told him about the Massive understeer it had, as the fella tried to go round the bend, but instead went straight through the wall.
When I left I said to him pretty much what Janner said. I said "Well, at the end of the day its still a Vauxhall mate. A Vauxhall thats been styled by Halfords" :happy2:
The guy was ready to have a heart attack I think :ashamed:
Old people. You can't beat em!.............................................which is a shame.
-
To be honest, think there supposed to be alright, am sure its ring time is mid 8s which would be same as rs, r26 etc
-
As an ex astra VXR owner i can honestly say that they are a very very good car, i had mine tuned to stage 2 and for the money it cost it was amazing, the build quality is great and the drive is fantastic, yeah maybe they don't have the build quality of the VAG cars but they are not far off and are loads better value! I picked my VXRs up brand new for just over 17k...... Excellent value for what you get compared to any golf or audi.....
Don't get me wrong i love my golf and think it is a better all round car than the astra, however if i was in the same boat buying new again I'd have the astra every time, I'd rather pocket the money for the price difference.
Just my 2p.
-
Astra went round the 'ring in 8 min 35 sec, that's why they made 835 of the white ones. Then Vauxhall went and spoilt it by releasing the Arctic Edition almost straight after! Williams Clio all over again.
I've a friend who drove an EDS tuned Vectra VXR that had 340PS, but I don't remember the kit ever being released to the public domain, it was more one of those 'look what we can do' type cars. Sure there was a few press write-ups on it, so there maybe some out there if you google it?
-
i dont rate the the astra at all.
my mate had the nurburg edition astra at TMS stage 2 which ran 276hp peak where mine made 262Hp peak @ stage 2 iirc. This was on the same dyno/same day in germany.
On the ring it was no faster than my vRS when on the straights if anything they were pretty much identical. In the corner i left him for dead but he had std suspension i had the full works incl coilovers, ARBs etc.
mine was till comfier as well, and better on fuel, with a bigger boot and cost less.
he no longer owns one. he now has a vRS TSi running stage 1 with all the same mods. says alot about the VXR astra IMO

I don't see you as old in any way Robin. :innocent:
If you are in your 60's, then all I can say is... I hope I am tearing up the track like you when I am your age :notworthy:

Please don't think that the TMS maps are any good at all, they are useless, i had one on mine and it was very poor, the figures might be good but they are poor, hardly any different to standard in my opinion, i then went for an EDS map and the car was unbelieveable.....
Honestly, superchips bluefin (TMS maps) cannot be compared to a proper tuned car!
-
sill think theyre crap as did he
