Title: Seat belt warning light passenger seat... Odd or normal?
Post by: SeanyK on September 12, 2010, 12:44:50 am
Hey folks, so there I was, heading over a friends house last night, armed with an Indian Takeaway.

The bag was on the passenger seat, and every so often I was getting the noise and dash display saying check seatbelt for the passenger side.

Obviously the weight of the bag was fooling the sensor into thinking it was a person on the seat.

Today, I managed to get the light / warning sound to come on just by driving along and pushing the base of the passenger seat in slightly with my hand... Not pushing it hard at all.

Is this correct? Do others do this? Or is the sensor going a bit haywire?

Thanks :)

Yes, the sensors do not need a huge amount of weight in the seat to active the seat belt warning  :happy2:

I used to put my bag on the seat. Wouldn't contain much. Less than 5kg but enough to set it off, which is why i disabled the warning bell.

The highline options won't silence the seat belt warning as it's technically a safety issue and VW could be liable if there was an incident.
You'll need vcds to turn off the warning as I'm pretty sure the dealer won't as it's disabling a safety feature.

IIRC the very early mk5 golfs (before the GTI came out) didn't have the seatbelt warning - VW added it to get a 5 star NCAP rating ...

Hang it on the bag hooks in the boot! No chance of it spilling then, and even if it does at least it's in your boot!
